My daughter was begging for a pet pigeon for well over a year. We found Palomacy's website and would sometimes look at their adoptable birds. "When you are 12" I would tell her, thinking that she might get over the obsession. But a week before her 9th birthday, a big white baby king pigeon crash landed in our backyard, and so we suddenly had a pet pigeon. Even though we didn't get a Palomacy bird or go through their adoption process, Elizabeth was incredibly generous with her time and expertise. She advised us on what kind of cage to get, visited our home, did a health check and administered some initial medications as a precaution, since the bird had been living with a feral flock. Since that time, she and the other Palomacy volunteers have always been available with advice and encouragement. And Pearl, our pigeon, has become a beloved family member. I had no idea that pigeons were so lovely and sweet as pets. We have happily accompanied Palomacy on their outreach events, and continue to learn about these amazing animals that so often go unnoticed.
