I've been a volunteer here for a little over a year, and have accrued over 500 hours of service. Like most volunteers here, the initial draw for me was getting to work with the dogs; I mean, who wouldn't want to hang out with a kennel full of Labrador Retrievers!? However, it was about 4 months into my service there and I had my first opportunity to help "train" one of our Veteran classes. I role-played the part of a store manager at a mall who challenged the right of the person (who was here because he has PTSD) to have a Service Animal in public... afterall, he clearly wasn't blind.
The response of the first person I did this with sticks with me to this day, "Yes I can, it keeps me from hurting people" he said.
That was my "Ah Ha" moment. The moment I could really see what this organization was doing for people, and more importantly, what these dogs were doing for the people.
I'm proud to be affiliated with Southeastern Guide Dogs. Their mission of transforming lives is visible with every class that comes to campus to receive and train with their new dog.
