Murphy was our first SEGD puppy. Although, I was not sure I was qualified to be a puppy raiser, I received all the help, encouragement, and support from everyone at SEGD. Murphy graduated training and is now a working Guide Dog. Raising Murphy was a wonderful experience for my family and I. We cannot wait to do it again. We are so grateful to be a part of the SEGD family.

Hi, I just finished guide dog training at DOGS, INC and what a life changing experience. I received my dog Grace and we have been inseparable for the past month. The staff were so professional, friendly, kind and courteous. The facilities were top notch and the training was superb. What Dogs inc provides is truly life changing. The staff, my classmates and my dog Grace have helped me to accept my vision loss and to stay positive about the future. They gave me the belief that my life is going to be very fulfilling and rewarding with Grace guiding me. I also must say that Grace has given me confidence to feel safe when she is guiding me. I know that my my Dogs Inc family will always be there to lend a helping hand if I need one.
Thanks so much!

I completed my training with my guide dog Lulu last week and it has changed my life. Lulu has given me confidence and independence! The team of trainers, breeders, fosters, and volunteers are amazing. The three weeks I spent at the facility prepared me for life with my new partner. The facilities are comfortable and beautiful. The staff is helpful, friendly, and professional. When it comes to training the guide dogs and preparing for the needs of the visually impaired, the people at Dogs Inc. have thought of everything. I am so thankful for this organization.

The moment I walked into Dogs Inc. I immediately sensed the care and passion each person brings to their work. The trainers are complete professionals who excel at pairing dogs with their ideal owners. Through attentive listening and careful observation they succeeded brilliantly by providing me with a service dog who brought unexpected positive changes to my life.

Throughout the process Dogs Inc provided thoughtful support and demonstrated abundant kindness. The passion of each trainer, staff member, and volunteer is evident through the excellent training of their dogs and their exceptional care for veterans who visit.

The chefs not only ensured our meals met our needs but also handled our specific food preferences with humor and a positive attitude.

At Dogs Inc I received my service dog which felt like the ultimate gratitude for my service and I will always remain thankful. You should choose to support Dogs Inc and their mission. Through their work with people like me they transform lives.

My heartfelt gratitude goes to Dogs Inc for everything you've done!

What a fabulous organization! I just finished raising my first puppy for Dogs Inc. I feel privileged to be a part of the process in preparing a dog to become a superhero for someone. If anyone wants to volunteer to a wonderful cause, have fun, become part of a group who loves helping others and dogs, and have a loving pup join your family for a year.....please check into this!!! Being a first-time raiser, I had many questions, but there was so much support from our area coordinator, class instructor, on-line resources, and all of the seasoned raisers that I met throughout the year that I was never alone. It has only been a few weeks since I returned Bridger for his formal training. I know he will be great at whatever career he chooses, and I know that the trainers at Dogs Inc. will train and guide him into the best fit for him. If you are looking for a guide dog, service dog, or are a Gold Star Family.....Dogs Inc may be the answer for you. I am amazed that the dogs that are matched to a person are given for FREE to those people/families. Plus you are trained with the dog you are being matched with. ❤️

I got my guide dog Millar this past September on my birthday. He has improved the quality of life for me in many ways. Using a cane prior to getting him, I always felt like it was a gamble when I was out walking. With Millar I am confident and back to enjoying my walking miles. He is reliable, has a phenomenal work ethic and just wonderful to be with. Millar is trained to keep me safe in various environments-thank you trainers and puppy raisers!

I have been involved with Dogs Inc (AKA known as Southeastern Guide Dogs) since May 2013 when I stepped into the role as volunteer Puppy Sitter and eventually Puppy Raiser. My experience with the volunteer leadership and the paid staff and leadership on campus has been a rewarding and valuable experience.

My positive experience as a volunteer confirms my belief that the same amount of care and , professionalism is given to the students and graduates who receive the dogs.

I would encourage anyone who is able to visit the campus to do so and see the state of art facilities and meet the staff. If that is not possible, the website presents a very accurate picture of reality.

You've heard the expression "put your money where your mouth is"? Well, mine is - I am a proud financial supporter of Dogs Inc.

I was first introduced to SEGD by a Puppy Raiser who attended my church. I was intrigued by his story and that of SEGD. I visited the campus and was immediately impressed with the people and mission of SEGD. I eased into a volunteer role as a Puppy Sitter, giving respite to Puppy Raisers and have sponsored 9 pups or students since my early involvement After 7 years, I made the leap to Puppy Raiser. I just turned in my pup for his formal training and while awaiting word on his progress, am taking steps to raise another pup.

I have been honored to have personal relationships with several SEGD Graduates and have learned first hand how their lives - and that of their families - have been changed for the positive.

I am so proud to be associated with this fine organization and the Caring people on staff and in volunteer roles.

My name is Charlie Pepinrivera and “SEGD and Lois saved my life”. I am a highly decorated US Army veteran and Wounded Warrior. I retired after 24 years of service and 5 tours of duty in Iraq, Kuwait, Bosnia, and Afghanistan. After getting shot during a military operation in Afghanistan, falling from a military helicopter, 14 surgeries and being 100 lbs. overweight, I was struggling with anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

“After recovering, I wanted to feel like myself again and the only thing that helped me was God, my family, SEGD and my new service dog "Lois".

Lois is my friend and my son (yes he is my son). We go together to the store and medical appointments. If I am having an anxiety attack he hugs me letting me know "dad I am here for you"

I love my new Service Dog. Thanks SEGD. You are awesome!

I have found Southeastern Guide Dogs, Inc to be an exceptional nonprofit organization. I have been involved in nonprofit work for over 40+ years. Supporting SEGD stands out from all the others. They live by their mission and provide exceptional service to the recipients of their service.

When I volunteer as a puppy raiser I am supported in all facets of my work. When I financially support SEGD I know my dollars will be used wisely. It is also rewarding to see SEGD work in action when a dog is placed with an individual.

Thank you SEGD- Outstanding mission, organization, and service! So glad to be associated with you!

When I picked up my 1st puppy, Stevie, I was a little nervous that I wasn’t cut out for a big job like puppy raising. But thanks to the abundance of support, physically, mentally, and financially, I was able to raise Stevie to be such a good boy who is now a college freshman. I am raising my second puppy, Banana, currently. Both boys have been handfuls in their own ways but SEGD has so much support that will help you through the highs and lows. I’m so honored to be apart of such a beautiful mission.

We were first time puppy starters which soon turned into puppy raisers for Lois! There aren't enough words to express how fulfilling an amazing the SEGD organization is. Your heart feels so good to know that when raising a puppy, they have a much greater purpose than just being a dog. You get all the puppy love, licks and kisses all while raising and training your puppy. We both love talking about the organization and all the benefits of being a puppy raiser when we are out and about, Lois went everywhere with us. We adore our local group, they are a great resource and a new friend group you never knew you needed. I can't think of one reason why you wouldn't want to raise a future super hero for SEGD! After we dropped off Lois for "puppy college" we decided we would raise another future super hero.

Not to mention, the dogs are the best that can be found. We highly recommend SEGD because they are hands down and without any doubt the best you will be able to find anywhere. That includes before your honored with a dog, during your training, and tremendous Alumni support that lasts through the working life of your dog.

It’s hard to imagine a better organization in this field. I researched many in advance. From other veteran based groups to those that convert retired greyhounds into service dogs and with all due respect, no other charity comes close. Professionalism, communication, package of benefits, extensive support network, community outreach, use of modern science and technology. They have it all covered. No matter what area of life you consider, there’s a right way to do things and then there’s everything else. There are an overwhelming amount of dog and animal based organizations out there. Trust me. I’ll make it easy on you. There’s SOUTHEASTERN GUIDE DOGS and then there’s everybody else. If you don’t look to them first, you are already playing for second place. Do yourself a favor and start your journey here with them. If you are looking to do good for someone else and for your soul, support them however you can. The work done here is truly life affirming in so many ways.

As a puppy raiser, this school has been supportive to us in multiple ways by paying for vet bills, having a staff to help and guide us, paying for heart worm, and flea & tick preventatives. They really do care about the volunteers who are helping raise their puppies for the first 14-16 months. It is a fantastic organization to be a volunteer. You are appreciated.

My experience was fantastic!

The trainers were amazing! They provided insightful instruction and took time to connect with us. They provided a fun, informative, and supportive class environment. They are all amazing people and I look forward to seeing one another's future adventures.

The facilities were mind blowingly beautiful. I definitely didn’t expect them to be so cozy and comfortable. In addition, the other members of staff were very kind and welcoming. The food was to die for as well and the kitchen was very accommodating!

The dogs are all talented, unique, and well behaved! It was so awesome to get to meet so many dogs and see their little personalities! We had the privilege to visit a litter of puppies and had an excellent time! The genetics and reproduction team was very sweet.

Meeting my guide was altogether unforgettable! I felt very well supported throughout the whole experience and cannot wait to see what we’ll accomplish together!!

My classmates were all super friendly and we all plan to stay in touch!

We also got the privilege to meet our puppy raisers!! It was an amazing experience for everyone! Alice was super excited to see the family who generously dedicated about a year or their time to raising her. The raisers were also super happy to see her again! They brought her a bunch of presents and definitely helped kickstart our bandana obsession! We will most definitely keep in touch!

Thanks so much Southeastern!

I am without proper words to describe my gratitude to all who have contributed their time,
money, and effort to supporting Southeastern. You have changed my life and given me, my wife, and children a new sense of hope and freedom.

I was fortunate to receive my first guide dog from Southeastern late last month. I was fully sighted in my youth, and my progressive vision loss has dropped walls around me throughout adulthood. The independence I received from my new companion was immediate, a sensation that continues to expand through our practice and experience together.

These dogs are incredible, but they are neither magic nor machine. Witnessing the resources required to prepare these sweet and brilliant animals for a life of service was humbling to the core. Southeastern is a world-class operation regarding the breeding, training, and care of these dogs. Moreover, learning to use a guide dog requires three weeks of onsite training, away from family and familiar surroundings. Southeastern’s unrelenting commitment to the human experience was also second to none. Encouragement, kindness, and accommodation made the start of our journey fun and exciting— a lesson in humility and friendship I will carry with me forever.

We volunteered at SEGD For five years before we moved to Tennessee. My husband and I volunteered in doing things like Canine Enrichment, Puppy Kindergarten, Weekend Getaways for dogs in the trading kennel, tour groups, and other great activities. While we still lived in Florida we started puppy raising, and recently picked up our fifth puppy! Our experience with SEGD has been outstanding. From spending on campus we know just how much the dogs are loved, and how much time and thought goes in to the ongoing improvements and developments on campus.

Southeastern Guide Dogs is an amazing organization! They truly provide hope for so many people who have lost hope. I decided to be a Puppy Raiser for the first time after losing our two labs last summer. Becoming a puppy raiser was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Of course, we fell in love with our puppy, Millie! I've had so many friends and family say "how can you give her up?" My answer is..."when you see how these amazing trainers turn these adorable puppies into heros that will literally positively transform people and their families lives, how can I not?" Our experience with SEGD has been nothing but positive! Great organization, great people, AMAZING dogs!!

From the moment I placed the call to Southeastern guide dogs, My life begin to move into a positive direction. Upon receiving my application approval, the Juno walk was scheduled at my home. The matching process began for my superhero. During my waiting period I felt the best way to show my gratitude to Southeastern Guide Dogs would be to sponsor a puppy, indeed it did! Her name was Faith which is what I needed she helper me to pass the time away As I watched her progress in her journey through training! It gave me a positive reassurance that one day I too would have the opportunity to meet my superhero.
On September 6, 2022 I received my call to meet my superhero.
From the time I arrived on campus I felt this overwhelming feeling of trust, as if a safety net of love and compassion Had been placed around me. SEGD is a place where everyone has a heart of gold! The facility is best known for the fabulous most excellent training staff, executive administration and wonderful volunteer basis (I.e. Puppy raisers, sponsors, Chef Rob and staff, housekeeping, the many volunteers that keep up the grounds and gift shop, and assist in training throughout the community are just a few of the wonderful ways they help). This organization is so vast and their generosity is unmatched.
If my message can do anything it is to help this organization grow, please take a moment Sign to their website, (guidedogs.org) browse around, listen to the amazing stories Both for the vision impaired and service dogs available- donate or volunteer, pardon the paraphrase, (you could never give to much but you could certainly do less) Give back for all that they have given me.
If you haven’t seen me yet, you’ll see that my confidence, independence, self worth and courage has grown and changed me into a more bold and stronger person since the day I met my superhero Mickey! All thanks to the beautiful and wonderful courageous people at the magnificent Southeastern Guide Dogs organization, Training team, and volunteer support team (please pardon the error if I omitted anyone).

I must give thanks to South Eastern Guide Dog (SEGD) for the opportunity they gave me to a second chance in life. Glaucoma has taken my right eye and slowly taken control over my left one. I had become depressed from worrying about losing my independence and having to wait on others to assist with guiding my every step. I went through classes for the blind to learn how to cope with this uncurable disease that has robbed me of my vision and previous lifestyle. In those classes, I learned that SEGD could give me some of my independence back. I became hopeful.

About a month ago, I arrived at the SEGD facility to be matched and trained how to take care of my guide dog. I was excited, yet very nervous. I had plenty of dogs in my lifetime, but this one would be different. This dog won’t be a family pet. This dog will be so much more. Suddenly, I felt like a bat trying to find its way in the early morning light. With having vision and hearing problems, I expected “Murphy’s Law” to set in during my 3 weeks training, but things turned out to be quite different.

One the contrary of my thinking, SEGD actually changed my life. The minute I walked through the doors, I was greeted by the friendly staff. Every staff member and trainer I met throughout my visit made me feel very welcome. They were excited I was there. The trainers were well experienced and extremely patience with my group as we learned skills and techniques to direct our dogs and keep our dogs and each of us safe. The trainers love for the dogs and what they do each day was epic. During our training, we traveled to many locations day and night to learn how to survive safely with our new pair of eyes. My group consisted of people that were legally blind (like myself) to totally blind. However, our trainers never complained or became frustrated or gave up on any of us. My group worked hard to adjust to this new lifestyle as we wanted independence. Our dogs were well trained and ready for work the first day. It was love at first sight for me and my peers with our new partners (dogs). The facility ensures our partners are well groomed, healthy, and ready for work. The stay at the facility was unbelievable. I was thrilled that my room had everything I needed and everything my partner needed. The building is fully equipped for people like me to navigate throughout easily. I was in awe of how well everything was ready to help people with my condition move around freely. During my visit, I bonded with the staff, my peers, and my new partner.... she’s amazingly beautiful. I highly recommend this experience and opportunity to anyone looking to get or regain their independence due to the loss of vision. I feel safe with my new partner guiding me. I can tell she feels safe with me too. I must also give thanks to the many donors for making this program available for me and others. -Edward Jordan Jr

I am very grateful for Southeastern's dedication to service. I have had three wonderful guide dogs from them. I am so happy that such caring people operate this facility. They took me under their wing and helped me with not only guiding, but balance and anxiety.

Splash, my first guide dog, helped me through college. He also comforted me through such distressing situations as severe weather and balance attacks. He was a major social ice breaker at HAM Radio meetings and church as well.

Zac continued Splash's legacy. He entertained at nursing homes, led me faithfully, and he still continues to brighten our spirits every day.

I just got Soko nine days ago. He is a lively young dog who enjoys playing outside and guiding faithfully. He's already helped me through two balance attacks and he is doing great.

Southeastern is one of the best organizations I have ever experienced. The trainers are knowledgeable and patient. Administrative staff is responsive and are very good about giving updates during a search for a successor dog. I'm looking forward to the joy of more dogs from them in the future. Thank you, Southeastern!

I saw a report from one of the puppy raisers from Southeastern with a phone number for more information. Since both my husband and I are retired, I thought it would be a good idea to call and find out more. Before we knew it, we were anxiously awaiting our first puppy.
We had been to some meetings with raisers and fell in love with their pups. The work seemed doable. It is work that needs to be done consistently but not for long lengths of time.
Our Ollie is now back at University training to see what his life’s work will be. We hope he does well and know he has the capacity to make a huge difference in someone’s life. He certainly changed ours!

When I moved to Florida from Connecticut about a year ago I was so excited to learn that there was a guide dog organization so close to where I live in Palmetto. Having volunteered at another guide dog organization in Patterson New York for many years I know how rewarding this type of activity was. I have been a volunteer at the puppy academy at Southeastern guide dogs for over 25 hours now and I have loved every minute of it. They’re a great organization who really care about the people that work and volunteer there. I know that no matter what activity I do as a volunteer whether it’s feeding puppies or cleaning the kennels it is contributing to allowing a young pup to become a future guide dog and thus change the course of someone’s life forever. If you’re thinking of volunteering I highly suggest this organization, you will love it.

I have been a volunteer puppy raiser for Southeastern Guide Dogs for 5 years and they are a wonderful and professional organization! It was important to me when investing my time, resources and heart, to work with a service dog nonprofit that monitored the dog's health and safety, as well as vetted carefully the client that would become the pup's life partner. There is continual assistance for me as a raiser for every question, ongoing training and troubleshooting. Being a puppy raiser is truly a life style. I'm privileged to be part of an organization that is "all in" when it comes to raising healthy dogs, investing in training volunteers, and placing dog/handler teams together that are truly life changing.

I currently volunteer with SEGD in many capacities, both on campus and as a puppy raiser. Their commitment to their mission, staff, volunteers, dogs and students is exceptional.

From the moment you step on campus, you know you have entered a place where every aspect of the organization is dedicated to achieving the mission (to transform lives by creating and nurturing extraordinary partnerships between people and dogs). The staff and volunteers are welcoming, caring helpful and knowledgeable. Everyone is treated with respect and kindness!

This organization is the nonprofit I have ever been involved with both as a volunteer, but also donating to. I started volunteering just prior to the start of the pandemic. While the pandemic was going on, they did everything they could to keep the volunteers involved and also educated while we were not able to be on campus. They offered online training and kept us up-to-date on things going on. Since being able to do in person work there, I love every shift. They make all volunteers feel very valued.

I also make monetary donations every month thru their adopt a dog program. I love receiving updates on the pups. Brings smiles to my face. We also donate during other times thru out the year.

You will not find a better organization to volunteer or donate to. I have been able to see first hand the difference they make in so many people’s lives whether it be as a volunteer, employee, or recipient of a dog.

Southeastern Guide Dogs gets it right both in terms of excellence in dog training and excellence with the people they serve and their volunteers. I have volunteered at a lot of organizations and this is by far the most well-run volunteer program. I feel that as a member of the Canine Fitness Center volunteer team, that I'm on the cutting edge of guide and assistance dog training and preparation and that's exciting! As a volunteer I've felt welcomed and valued from the first day and each day I come to help out. The facilities and programs are all top notch.

It is with a great sense of joy and humbleness that my life path intersected with this extraordinary organization. The confidence and freedom that my companion Toby has brought me is nothing short of magical. The staff from trainers, support personnel, and administration are extremely devoted and gifted at what they do. I can honestly say this group is a true and sincere example at creating and instilling a positive vibe that has a client served I can assimilate well into my environment and society. I wrote this on the early morning of my last day.

Unconditional Love;
A concept introduced to us by our creator ~~
And it comes to fruition in the form of a beautiful creature that we call Dog.
And as God always has a way of showing us the light
Dog spelled backwards is one name for our creator,,,
How simple but truly amazing is that £

In closing that poem represents what Southeastern Guide Dog Academy “is”

A “world class” organization providing “matched teams” for applicants requiring Guide Dog or Service Dog assistance. Time is invested visiting and getting to “know” the applicant to ensure the correct “match” if available prior to applicant acceptance and arrival on campus.
Comfortable facilities, professional staff, personal training and safe environment.
You will leave campus with a “Partner and Independence” for daily living.

What a wonderful charity to support! We have raised 3 puppies with SEGD and have enjoyed each, very different, experience. Our whole family becomes involved in various ways but we all equally love the pups to the very end when we anxiously await to learn of their destiny! The organization is supportive and responsive to all of our questions or concerns since we are not the experts. They make the experience positive in the way that we hope one of our pups will be a gift to a person in need.

For the past 14 months, my husband and I have been puppy raisers for Southeastern Guide Dogs. We were introduced to the group by our best friends who have raised many puppies for this organization. We decided to be puppy raisers from seeing how professionally Southeastern Guide Dogs supports not only its raisers (who are all volunteers), but also the dogs, and the people who are the recipients of their services- people who are visually impaired, veterans and others. As a volunteer puppy raiser, the organization provided us with wonderful written materials, online classes, and regular in person training. All of these educational opportunities helped us give our guide dog puppy the best start so he can ultimately support others who need him and his skills. We never felt alone when raising the pup. We had support from other raisers in our group, our Area Coordinator who was always available to answer questions, and a Regional Manager who could act as a liaison with the organization and provide additional support as needed. We had a very positive experience with Southeastern Guide Dogs from before we picked up our pup, to when we returned him to school for his advanced training at their “canine college.” We believe in Southeastern Guide Dogs so much that we also support their fundraising efforts through their walkathons and other fund raising efforts to support veterans and others.

Southeastern Guide Dogs is changing so many lives for the better! I received my first guide dog at the end of March and life just keeps getting better! When I started losing my sight, I lost my career, the ability to drive, my freedom, confidence and independence. Now I drive a beautiful yellow lab through a harness and I feel like myself again! I no longer have to depend on my family to make sure I’m safe on the road, in parking lots, in stores, etc. I can do things on my own again through the help of Lolita! All of that is possible through selfless donors, volunteers, trainers and special puppy raisers who make it possible at no cost to the client. It’s a gift I’ll never be able to repay and there will never be enough words to express my gratitude to Southeastern Guide Dogs!

What wonderful friends I’ve made - and puppies I’ve met! The first I raised is now working for a gentleman with PTSD - fit in exactly the career she belongs. I’m raising my second puppy now, and can’t wait to see where he’s led. It’s a joy of a service, raising these dogs to see great careers ahead.

Southeastern Guide Dogs is an excellent non profit that gets no government funding, raises money through fundraising and provides the blind with dogs to guide them through the world and comforting, service dogs to guard and protect veterans from a world that they are afraid of. The facilities are excellent and provide a comfortable place for students to live and learn how to use their dogs. Raising puppies for them has been one of the most rewarding experiences ever. I've raised 5 dogs for them. They provide support for raisers and make the turning in process a little less painful through puppy hugging, a training simulation, and listening to a graduate that's life changed after getting a dog. I highly recommend them if you need a dog or want to raise one.

I have had the pleasure of volunteering at Southeastern Guide Dogs for 7 years. I currently volunteer in the Puppy Nursery. As a former Labor and Delivery and Nursery RN, I am able to combine the joy of bringing new lives into the world with my absolute love of dogs, especially puppies. For me, it's the perfect fit. The staff and administration at SEGD appreciate their volunteers and it shows. They always ask for feedback from their volunteers to insure that their volunteer experience is a worthwhile one. The best part of my volunteer experience is knowing many of these little puppies will grow into service dogs that will change someone's life for the better. Puppy breath is also a huge plus. I would highly recommend SEGD to others who want to make a difference in rhis crazy world.

And the puppies and dogs, well what can I say...they are all fabulous! I look forward to every shift! I have done everything from cleaning, to bathing puppies, to data entry, to making lickety sticks (although I prefer the sweet potato over the peas and carrots, the dogs love them all! ) It is so heartwarming and so very rewarding to watch the dogs learn and grow from puppyhood to being matched with a visually impaired student or a veteran with PTSD. I have been volunteering at Southeastern Guide Dogs for over five wonderful years. One morning a week I work at Canine University with three wonderful ladies and we are proud to be known as the "super-duper cleaning quartet"! I also help with set-up, clean-up and serving at both the Puppy Raiser Brunch, where visually impaired students get to meet the people who raised their new canine companion and the Veterans' dinner, where veterans with PTSD meet the people that raised their service dog. It is very heartwarming and rewarding to witness the bond that has already formed between the students and their new partners and to see the love still shared between the dogs and their puppy raisers. I also work with my husband (Joe Ligi) weeding and keeping all the gardens in good order! All my hard work is rewarded when I go to the Puppy Academy and to bathe puppies! I love every minute of those mornings! I love seeing the puppies as they grow and then go to their puppy raiser for a year, but the best reward is when I see them come back a year later as grown dogs in Canine University. The love and devotion shown to the puppies and dogs by the employees and volunteers is something that has to be witnessed firsthand. There are always lots of smiles from happy employees and volunteers and joyous tail wagging from the puppies and dogs at Southeastern Guide Dogs. I think it is a testament to the reputation, operation and successes of SEGD's that with their continual growth and expansion, many of the new and planned buildings are fully funded by generous contributions BEFORE a footing is poured! It is truly a non-profit that deserves recognition for their continued contributions to so many facets of society.

AJ and I were brought together by Southeastern Guide Dogs. I couldn't be happier with my choice to apply and attend SEGD. From the very start I was welcomed with open arms.
The application process is easy and you are kept informed throughout the whole process.
The trainers and dogs are top quality. My trainers Jenn, Caitlin, Courtney, and Carl were amazing. They worked hard each day of classes to ensure that AJ and I would be successful together. No chore to big or to small for them.
The rooms on campus were large, comfortable, and super clean. My room was attended daily. I had a huge private bathroom, lots of drawer and closet space, and a refrigerator in my room.
The meals were delicious. Chef Rob is a 5 star chef!! Breakfast, lunch and dinner were certainly times to look forward to. I learned to eat new things and some new twists on old favorites. Thanks Chef Rob for a tremendous 5 star resort experience. You and Shanna are the bomb.
The campus is beautiful and filled with walking areas and benches which are perfect for bonding with your dog. The vet clinic and Dr. C along with his staff are on campus should your dog need any attention while in training or after you go home.
The gift shop has so many items to choose from. Far more than on the internet site. I hope they update that to include all the merchandise.
If you are looking for a guide dog please make this your first stop. Give admissions a call and find out what I already know...how amazing Southeaster Guide Dogs is. You won't be sorry.
If you are looking to donate to an organization that will make sure you donation changes lives then look no further. AJ has changed my life completely. I can now shop alone and live life again after having lost my sight. Your donation will be put to great use here.

We attended "Freshman Orientation" in January 2021. Even with the Covid pandemic, Southeastern made the drop off event so special, unique and personal. We were greeted with local puppy raisers and their puppies outside their facility with balloons and signs, cheering us onto campus for an emotional drop off. Once there, it was well organized with pictures, gifts and finally the good-bye. Kuddos to Southeastern for allowing puppy raisers the opportunity to hand the leash over in such an honoring way.

True story - I work at Southeastern Guide Dogs and one of my roles is to interview each person with their new dog and then write a short bio about each one. These bios are provided to the puppy raiser and the sponsor of the dog, to let them know of the difference their dog makes.
I've heard so many heart-wrenching stories of vision loss and the accompanying loss of freedom--no more drivers license; no more ability to look into a child or grandchild's eyes; and a loss of hope and confidence. I've spoken to veterans with PTSD who can't seem to forget the memories of Afghanistan, Iraq, and even Vietnam.

And then they get their dogs--their guide dogs and service dogs--and everything changes. Their shoulders lift; they sleep through the night; and they travel and go and do and be and LIVE.

As a female, I make sure to wear waterproof mascara before interviewing them, because often when they begin to get teary and misty, I can't help but cry myself. Good tears. Tears of amazement and hope and renewed expectancy and confidence.

It is an absolute privilege to see the incredible transformations and the difference a dog makes. Here at Southeastern Guide Dogs, it's often said that we transform lives, one dog at a time.

Truth.

My first full day home we went for a walk at Universal City Walk and it was amazing. I got to enjoy the afternoon without looking down or being stressed about who (or what) I was going to bump into. As someone who's been around the military for my professional career and supporting those who serve, I developed a keen awareness of their sacrifice and how important it is that we take care of those who've made the sacrifice for our nation particularly those that now need extra help in their daily lives. The value of a dog in the life of a person who needs that extra help, whether they be visually impaired, a veteran, or someone who just needs the emotional support, is life changing. I joined Southeastern Guide Dogs because of their mission to support this community and my love for dogs (yes, I'm a life long Labrador owner). It my time volunteering, I've seen the singular dedication to mission of the professional staff and volunteers to support this community. To see and hear the stories the graduating classes and what their new four legged best friend means to them is humbling. I cannot speak highly enough about this organization that helps vets like myself that have PTSD to obtain a service dog. My two trainers were the greatest. They took their time to help me through with all the necessary commands i had to learn to graduate. My service dog named “SAL” is a great comfort to me already and i only had him for 2 weeks. We both have bonded together right away. Its like we been together for years. I want to thank Southeastern Guide Dogs Inc. And all the sponsors, donors and everyone else that make all this possible for us vets. GOD BLESS to all of you.

My family has been involved with Southeastern Guide Dogs for two years now. We are currently raising our 2nd puppy for the school which has been so rewarding! Additionally, I have volunteered in the Canine University (a.k.a. Training Kennel) for over a year and I love spending time with the dogs and staff on Saturday mornings. My mom is also involved and after volunteering in the Puppy Kennel for several months she moved up into a Puppy Educator role. She loves working with pups from 7-12 weeks of age introducing them to new things! And who doesn't LOVE to play with puppies?!?!?

We are not only weekly volunteers and current puppy raisers, but also Cornerstone Society members as well. Please consider volunteering in some capacity for this organization! Our continued volunteer support allows them to place extraordinarily trained Guide and Service dogs to those in need at NO COST and NO government funding.

I cannot say enough great things about SEGD. I am a disabled veteran with PTSD and physical issues. The service dog trainers at SEGD picked a beautiful Goldador named Sasha as my new battle buddy, I could not be happier and she starting changing my life from the day I met her 20 days ago. The service dog trainers are amazing, extremely knowledgeable, caring, loving and become your newest best friends by the time the class is over. The facilities are way modern, clean and beyond ecxpectations. The Chefs are great, friendly and the food is amazing. The entire staff and volunteers are great. This is a fantastic organization that cares about veterans and want to help. I have been so blessed to have them in my life and providing me with the best new battle buddy in the world.

Thank you for everything,

Southeastern Guide Dogs is truly a world class state of the art training facility for both Guide dogs and Service dogs. The campus is well maintained. My first impression upon arriving there put me in awe. The campus buildings are recently built and you feel as though you are on a college campus for humans. This place breeds their own service dogs and has a research lab on site that helps detect defects in canine dna so that healthy Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers can be born. Students get to stay in their state of art dorm rooms which is equipped with its on mini fridge, Amazon
Alexa, full bathroom, flat screen TV, closet and Central Air. Each room has its own patio with and an astroturf area for your service dog to use to go to the bathroom. School provides students with 3 free meals a day from its onsite full industrial kitchen that staffs cooks with great culinary talent. This organization is non profit, ADI accredited school. They rely solely on private donations and do not take any government funds. If your looking for a service animal school that is top notch, Southeastern Guide Dogs is definitely it!

I have been volunteering at Southeastern Guide Dogs for three years now serving in various areas of the campus including being on the Volunteer Advisory Committee. While I was working, I served on a number of non-profit boards none of which ran their organizations like this one. SEGD is second to none in how they support, communicate, educate and show genuine appreciation to their volunteers. The staff never makes you feel like you are getting in their way. Rather, they recognize how much value we contribute to the organization not to mention how much money we save them in payroll and benefits. All of us support each other never taking our eye off the overall mission of training world-class dogs that support the vision impaired and our veterans with disabilities.

Last month I was lucky enough to graduate from Southeastern Guide Dogs with my new guide. This is a top notch facility. There truly are not enough words to explain the magnitude of the gift this school has given me. I ask you, what price can you put on your independence? Southeastern provides all their services absolutely free of charge. The facility itself is gorgeous. The staff is the kindest you will find anywhere. They put the welfare of their dogs and their students before anything else. The three weeks I spent at the school changed my life. My new guide has given me the confidence to walk out my front door unafraid for the first time in 10 years. If you are someone in need of a guide dog, do not hesitate to apply to this school. If you are a donor, puppy raiser or sponsor, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your gift has changed my life.

I came to know Southeastern Guide Dogs from living nearby at Tree Lakes RV and resort in Palmetto Florida. Our senior park is a big supporter. I have attended many of the dog walks in Bradenton and last year the park earned the right to name a puppy. I am now 82 years old and needed to find something to keep me occupied. A friend suggested Southeastern Guide Dogs and said they might need volunteers. Well I found out they did, i applied, was accepted and have been working about a month. I was blown away at how large they have grown and how how many volunteers there are along with professional workers. I am thrilled to be a part of the team and be able to give to so many in need. The organization is amazing and I am learning how much it takes to bring the puppy to being a Super Guide Dog. The staff have been great and helped me to become comfortable in my duties. It has given me value to my life and amazing life to those we have helped. I am looking forward to my continued journey.

As a puppy raiser, I meet people all the time who say how much they love Southeastern, or ask how they can be involved. I contribute with time and financials and believe both are well spent. The Instagram feeds @seguidedogs and @guidedogtrainers are just one window into the day to day activities. The feel Good Friday you Tube videos also are great representations of how this not for profit works. I first was introduced to Southeastern in mid-1987 & was very impressed. The school was very young then with huge potential. Having worn eyeglasses since childhood and with a intense love for dogs, I recognized a common ground & immediately wanted to become involved. But for work-related reasons, that involvement didn't come for several years.

Fast forward to October 2019 - my 11th year volunteering for Southeastern. I began my journey as a puppy raiser. What a rewarding experience! Since then, I've had the opportunity to volunteer in several other areas - assisting in the early education of our puppies, working at the front desk in our Student Center, conducting tours on our 33-acre campus, helping out with public events and fundraising for the annual Walkathon and sponsoring/naming five puppies. I adopted my beautiful black Lab, Lindy, from Southeastern and she & I became part of the Ambassador program. As an Ambassador team we represented Southeastern both on and off campus, participating in events, speaking engagements and visiting schools, nursing homes and hospitals.

Without question, Southeastern Guide Dogs is in a nonprofit class by itself...World Class! From the dedicated, forward-thinking Board of Directors, the creative , hard-working staff and the hundreds of selfless volunteers across several states, this organization is simply top notch. And from my point of view...the appreciation for what I contribute to the overall success of Southeastern is demonstrated constantly from the top down. An admirable attribute not commonly found in many organizations today.

My husband and I first came to the SEGD campus in 1984. We were visiting family and we came to see and interact with the puppies. At that time the “campus” consisted of one building and some walking paths. The role of the visitor was to walk and groom a puppy or older dog to help with socializing, a very important part of their training.
In 200 we moved to the Tampa area from Iowa and began a new chapter in our journey. Last fall we saw a news story about SEGD and decided to run down and check it out as we had not been there since our first visit in 1984. Needless to say, we were blown away by the transformation from a single to building to a true campus. We were so impressed and inspired that we immediately made a donation while we were there.
Because of our donation we were contacted by the organization and invited to a private tour of the entire facility. We were absolutely in awe of everything they have accomplished and the wonderful work that is done to transform people lives. All by donation, no government funding. We’ve been invited to a few recipient graduations and an event showcasing the work and support that is given to our precious war veterans and their families.
When I retired earlier this year I already knew I wanted to give even more and signed up to become a volunteer. I was worried it would take a while to get in,but, to my surprise I was able to start right away. Best decision I ever made. The entire staff, from HR to canine techs have been wonderful to work with and are so grateful for all the help they receive from the volunteers.
I love this opportunity to spread the work about this amazing notforprofit organization.

I have been volunteering on the Southeastern Guide Dog Campus for five years and have worked in a myriad of different roles all over the campus. I have observed this campus go through an absolutely remarkable transformation physically, while simultaneously maintaining a high level of of canine care and training for our dogs. The new facilities allowed the team at SEGD take everything they do to a new level. Even to the point of other facilities to come to our campus and observe. That in itself is a huge compliment.

Our CEO Titus Herman set out a vision and a plan to be the best facility of it's kind in the world. It is a vision shared by all of the Volunteers and Employees. This amazing vision and leadership has all been achieved through donations from some very caring, generous people, and corporations. This out pouring of generosity has allowed us to update thirty year old buildings that were bursting at the seams. To give us a state of the art facility. In my humble opinion even with all of the help, it could not have be achieved without fiscal responsibility. The entire management team and Board members shepherd the dollars they are given with upmost fiscal responsibility.

We expanded our service dog training to include our outstanding military veterans who now suffer PTSD. I volunteer in this program and have personally seen the end result of everyones efforts on the campus. At the end of one training exercise a young man walked up to me shook my hand and said, " I wanted to personally thank you. " I thanked him for his service and sacrifice. He said, "you don't seem to understand, two weeks ago I never thought I would see the inside a mall again in my life now I am standing here with you in front of Macy's."

There are a lot of charity's one can give money to. As you contemplate this decision I encourage you to look at the videos on our website. Visit our campus for a personal tour we are open and transparent and see what we do.

We transform lives and give people an enhanced and a new beginning in life. I could not be any happier knowing that I am just one cog in a wheel that helps Southeaster Guide Dogs accomplish their goals and aspirations.

I began volunteering with SEGD in November of 2018. It has changed my life. As someone who has worked with and for non profits for many years, I have to say this is the most professional organization I have ever worked with. There is a very large number of volunteers- 350+ - and the communication, the opportunities and the training is like no other. We are routinely recognized for our contribution, no matter how small. We are invited to lectures that are outstanding, not just about the organization itself, but by those who have benefited from it. The staff at every level are extremely dedicated and supportive. I hope that anyone who loves dogs, appreciates the struggles of the sight impaired and the service of our many veterans, with get involved. If you can’t, then donate. This fine organization relies solely on donations from the public and businesses to sustain its core mission. Southeastern Guide Dogs is a very unique and special organization that provides service dogs to the blind as well as Veterans. This is the ONLY not-for-profit that I've ever worked for or with that does not accept any federal, government or grant funding. All the funds received are donations. To my understanding, not one single building on this magnificent campus is built without having the funds in hand prior to start of construction. That's amazing!
As a volunteer I get the privilege of providing help to allow the staff members to do more than they normally would be able to do. The campus is meticulous and the staff always has a smile for anyone even on the toughest of days. (We often hear that the floors are so clean you could eat off of them!) Each and every volunteer gets knows with confidence that their efforts are greatly appreciated. With over 300 volunteers, we take pride in knowing how much money we've saved SEGD so that the funds can be directed toward the recipients.
From driving golf carts, helping in the kitchen, being a Breeder Dog Host to a Puppy Raiser, we each take great pride in the gift of our efforts.
Thank you Southeastern Guide Dogs for letting me be part of that contribution!

I've been visually impaired or legally blind since birth. But with age comes lower vision and I was missing curbs which was causing me to take some nasty tumbles. II had also gotten quite depressed because I was unable to find a job due to my limited mobility. My wife was concerned and suggested that I might want to look into getting a guide dog. After much research, we decided that Southeaster Guide Dogs would be the best school for me to attend.

Going to Southeastern and getting my first guide dog, Keni was the second best decision I have ever made (the first was marrying my wife). Since graduation two years ago I have improved mobility, been able to find a job that I could not have previously done without Keni's help and I have a lot more self confidence. I’d like to take the time to tell my story of how
Southeastern Guide Dogs saved my life by giving me my
best friend, Hooch. Unlike most best friends, mine
is covered in fur, has a tail that wags like a top notch
propeller, and instead of a handshake he prefers licking
my face until it appears as if I just came out of the shower.
I know that description doesn’t sound appealing to most,
but in my opinion it’s perfect and I wouldn’t have it any
other way.

When I was 17 I joined the U.S. Marines and
deployed to the Sangin district of Afghanistan for 10
months. As a 20/21 year old in combat, the experiences
and actions that were made, had to be done to ensure the
safety and survival of myself, and my brothers that were
with me during it all. I saw and did things that I’d never
imagine, that I never knew existed, and that I’d never be
able to forget. But this isn’t about those experiences and is
not a therapy session. This is about my recovery and the
goldador who made such a thing possible for me.
Following deployment I began to realize that I wasn’t
right. Nothing was right, but I tried to force myself to act
like it was. My life has never plummeted like it did after
Afghanistan. I walked around with a fake smile and a
source of alcohol and drugs at all times thinking that was
normal. I called it a “coping mechanism”. For the record, if
you’re a 21 year old using drugs and alcohol to make you
seem normal like all of your chipper friends and then pre
meditating the end of your life with an optimistic feeling
towards the thought, then that is not a successful “coping
mechanism”. In denial of being clinically insane, and
wanting to avoid ridicule from the majority of the big bad
Marine Corps who say that mental illness after war is for
the weak, I sought treatment. Immediately, I was
diagnosed with a Traumatic Brain Injury, and PTSD.
Before treatment began, I was transferred to Wounded
Warriors Battalion on Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. First
step: Medication. Long story short, I am now 26 years old
and over the course of treatment I have been prescribed
to 46 different medications and a max of 15 a day. This
may remind you of a lab rat, or a guinea pig if you will.
With all of these medications, I still could not escape the
pain, guilt, regret, and hatred towards myself that I was
constantly feeling. So I took my self medicating to a new,
and more dangerous level. Drugs and alcohol became a
necessity for me to function in everyday life. I was an
empty vessel walking amongst people who I considered
an enemy, and a threat towards my life. By people, I mean
everyone; including my best friends, my mother who has
loved me unconditionally since the day she gave birth to
me, and my entire family. My brother John who is my idle
and inspiration for many things, wasn’t my brother in my
mind. He was another living life form, and possible target if
he were to approach me in any way I found aggressive.
As you can see, I was lost, sick, and absolutely out of my mind.

One day my physiologist suggested a service dog for
TBI, and PTSD. Something I have never heard of, nor did I
care or think it would help. Thankfully, it wasn’t up to me; it
was in the hands of the licensed physician who provided
me with the answer to my prayers, and the start to getting
my life back. After months of paperwork and going through
the eligibility process, I was approved for a Veteran
service dog provided by Southeastern Guide Dogs of
Palmetto, FL. March 15th was the day I traveled to the
guide dog organization to begin the two week class,
educating me about service dogs and how to command
and co exist with one for mutual benefits. The first day
upon arrival is when you meet the rest of your six student
class, and let the trainers get to know everything about
you. The good and the bad, but no dogs were provided
yet. Little did I know, March 16th would be the day that my
life would change forever. We were told to wait in our
rooms, which were provided on the campus of SEGD. I
hear the commotion in the hallways consisting of multiple
footsteps, and whatever was moving was moving with a
purpose. I now feel threatened and defense/survival
instincts snap into action. But when my door opened I
unexpectedly had to look down to see what this target/
threat was. I then looked into the eyes of a black Lab/
Retriever and suddenly felt absolutely no feeling of threat
or fear. I sat on the floor because I had to get closer to this
dog who was able to make me feel like I did before
Afghanistan, before the drugs and alcohol, when I was
simply just happy. My new best friend’s name was
“Hooch”. Perfect. Everything about him was, and still is,
perfect.

It’s been about 2 1/2 years now since Hooch and I
were paired but within days he started to change my life. I
began feeling happiness again, when I thought there was
no such thing. I reconnected with people, who I
considered a threat to me, only to know that they’ve cared
for me the entire time. I know Hooch won’t be alive forever
but, with tears in my eyes, what I can honestly say is that
he will always be with me, and I with him. I love him with
all my heart, and I owe him my life. A special thanks to
Southeastern Guide Dogs for saving my life by bringing
me together with, my best friend, Hooch.

I'm a volunteer and donor to this exceptional organization. The care they show to their dogs, students, volunteer and employees is unlike anything I have experienced in many years of volunteering. No government funds are used and ALL dogs are provided free of charge - including continued follow up visits. It does not matter where in the US the student lives, SEGD will support them throughout their working relationship with their dog.

When my husband and I retired to Sarasota, Florida, I was thrilled to see a highway billboard announcing that Southeastern Guide Dogs was close by. We had raised three puppies for Guiding Eyes for the Blind in Syracuse and then Albany, New York, and I was excited to think about being a part of another organization that offered these magnificent dogs to visually impaired folks. It didn't take me long to visit Southeastern (had the puppy hugging experience) and signed up to volunteer. I soon learned that they also provided specially trained dogs for veterans dealing with PTSD in the Paws for Patriots program. That was 2010/2011. I've never experienced a more dedicated and enthusiastic staff and that transfers easily to their volunteers. Their mission, their professional approach to running Southeastern, their true appreciation of and for their many volunteers, are a few of the reasons why Southeastern is an outstanding nonprofit organization. The impact they have on so many individual lives, whether visually impaired or a Veteran in need of a service dog, is best seen and heard on their website. To say these testimonies are a moving tribute to the value of Southeastern's mission and impact, is an understatement. I am a personal friend of two people who are each a recipient of a Southeastern dog, one legally blind and the other a Veteran and I've had the up close privilege of seeing what these dogs mean to them. The emotional bond and the working partnership are amazing to see. I truly believe that the GreatNonProfits Top-Rated Award couldn't go to a more deserving service organization.

I have been a volunteer puppy raiser for Southeastern Guide Dogs for almost 2 years now. The main reason that I selected this nonprofit organization was because of all of the positive reviews they have received online. After I joined this group. I quickly saw first hand why they received all of these reviews and most importantly that all of them were true and not made up by people paid to post positive reviews. Every single staff member, and volunteer that I have had the pleasure to meet are truly friendly, but most importantly they are professional. All of these wonderful qualities displayed by them are all because every single one of them absolutely love their jobs, and know what a life changing experience all of the people who in the end receives one of our guide dogs will encounter.

Southeastern guide dogs has been part of my life since 2002 when I got my first guide dog. Since then the school has significantly upgraded its infrastructure and added a service animal program for veterans with PTSD. During this time they have retained their core mission of graduating competent and independent guide dog teams

We are proud to be apart of this organization as volunteers. Donors, and a guide dog user. Visit their website for some inspiring stories and live web cams of the puppy kennels

I am grateful everyday that I have had the opportunity to volunteer for SEGD for the last 4 years. The staff is very committed and passionate about what they do and they do an excellent job and just keep getting better. The guide and service dogs that they train change people's lives everyday. The dogs are amazing, smart, loving and dedicated to their "forever" person. There is not charge to an individual for a dog. As a volunteer I have received so much more than I have given. Working for a charity that is committed to excellence is wonderful experience. All you have to do is be around the dogs and the staff for a few minutes to understand why this is a charity of the highest excellence.

My life has opened up since I received Atlas, my amazing guide dog. Prior to Atlas I would take a daily walk in my community the walk was slow are careful; not a lot of cardio exercise. Now, we both go at a fast clip just like the sighted walkers. Atlas is there with me at all times and loved by all. I volunteer as a drug rehab counselor and with a bereavement group for Hospice. I'm not sure who makes the greatest impact with the participants, it might be Atlas. He is remarkable in what he has learned since Guide dog school: He can find a public trash can, restroom, stairs, he will locate the car he arrived in faster than the driver, he attends church and listens when the finial Amen is spoken Atlas stretches get up without command and on and on. He is my best friend and faithful companion, thanks Southeastern what a perfect team we have become.

I have been a puppy raiser with Southeastern for nearly eight years. Oftentimes, once you become part of an organization, you begin to learn what it's "really" like, warts and all. Southeastern is an amazing organization in that everyone -- everyone! -- is laser-focused on what they do: provide guide dogs to the sight-impaired. I have had only positive experiences in dealing with anyone from Southeastern, from the CEO to the people who clean the floors in the puppy kennel. Their entire mission is underwritten by private donations, and they are an exceedingly responsible steward of the donations they receive. Southeastern is No. 1 in my book.

Raising a puppy for Southeastern Guide Dogs is an exciting, life-changing opportunity. The puppies are well bred and eager to learn. They give us far more than we give them in the time we are with them. They have to leave us in order to fulfill their real role in life, that of a superhero, but the paw prints they leave on our hearts last a lifetime. Southeastern Guide Dogs cares about the dogs, the puppy raisers and everyone else involved in the dog's life. Every step along the way is rewarding. Puppy Raisers grow right along side the dog. SEGD has my vote for a superb non-profit organization. I am nearing the end of raising my first pup for SEGD and it's been such a wonderful experience. As a first time raiser (who didn't know much about raising pups), SEGD provided lots and lots of support! Everything from answering questions, having meetings with all of the local raisers to address issues, making home visits and providing puppy-sitters when I was traveling or just needed a break! The fact that the school provides these service dogs to those that need them, free of charge, is most impressive. The work that goes into each pup is immense...but the end result is overwhelming. To see pups matched to their new handlers is wonderful, and when it comes time watch my pup with her new handler, I know that I will be so proud for having played a small role in changing someone's life! How cool is that! Working with these dogs and the feelings that come with doing this work, is what helps me sleep at night.

My first pup will go IFT (in for training) in July. I started my next pup early, so that pup#1 can help to teach pup#2 what appropriate behavior looks like! See photo below!

Our family has raised 15 puppies for Southeastern Guide Dogs and we are raising the 16th pup now. I can't even imagine not being a part of puppy raising. This has been a highly satisfying venture with an outstanding organization. We of course love the puppies, but the people we have come in contact with are like minded giving people. The staff and volunteers truly love the cause and it shines through.

Our son started us with puppy raising when he was 16 years old, we were so excited when our first puppy became a guide dog after living with us for about one year, and training at Southeastern for over 7 mos. Pepper worked about 6 years and when it was time for him to retire, our son was in a position to adopt him as a retired guide. Pepper lived out the rest of his life in Nashville where he was a Therapy Dog, expert hiker and a loved family member.

Pictured here is Harley, our 15th puppy. He is currently in for training at Southeastern Guide Dogs and we have high hopes he will attain a job perfect for his skill level.

I am raising my first puppy for Southeastern Guide Dogs and I am incredibly impressed with this organization. The dogs are beautifully bred--healthy, intelligent, loving--and well-started by an excellent kennel staff. The puppies are a pure pleasure to train, and the organization provides amazing support for puppy raisers. Our area coordinator is outstanding, providing bi-monthly training days which are well-organized and based on both her long experience and on the best, most current research in dog training. She is also always available to offer support and advice. My AC even travelled to my city to observe our local puppy obedience class in order to give me guidance about adjustments which are necessary when raising a guide dog puppy. Professional trainers from the school also offer local special classes for PR's. I feel confident that my pup, Suzie, is being given the best chance possible at becoming a successful guide dog, and I feel assured that I can trust Southeastern Guide Dogs to place her in just the right situation, a place where she can impact lives in a positive way and be loved and cared for in return.

I started volunteering at Southeastern Guide Dogs in 2006 when it was still a mom/pop organization. I have seen wonderful changes to the physical campus along with amazing changes in the way our Superhero dogs are cared for from birth and trained to become the dogs that transform the lives of our students. All these years later I still get excited to go to my shift as a volunteer. I have been continually trained and given in-service updates on new techniques that create our wonderful guide and service dogs. I truly feel that I am a part of a team of staff and volunteers working together towards a common goal.

People come to us because they cannot see and want the independence a guide dog will give them, or have seen too much ( our veterans) and want the comfort and security of a service dog. They train on the campus receiving all that training and one of our dogs at no cost to them. It changes their life forever! It has been my privilege to volunteer for this wonderful organization and I will continue to do so as long as I can.

Southeastern Guide Dogs has been one of the 3 charities I have supported for the past 30+ years both during my working career as an RN and now that I am retired.
The nurse in me respects them for what they do to change people's lives. The transformations their dogs can make in the lives of those with visual or emotional challenges are miraculous!
The dog lover in me respects what characteristics they have developed and nurtured in their dogs and how they accomplish their goals. As I volunteer for SEGD on and off campus I know first hand how much dedication the staff and management at SEGD strives for perfection but achieves without taking shortcuts to develop their dogs.
The parent in me respects the method SEGD uses to develop their programs. They use patience, love and tolerance in every aspect of their organization. SEGD makes it their mission to transform lives by providing others with hope. In my opinion hope is the greatest gift one can give. Southeastern Guide Dogs provide all with hope.

The staff are always appreciative, the volunteers cheerful, and the dogs wonderful. The chance to see graduations when the client is about to leave with their guide is one of the most heartwarming and emotional experiences one can imagine. Additionally, they work hard to ensure the volunteers are well trained and events are organized.
The organization is fully dedicated to providing the best experience for their clients, both the visually impaired or the recipient of a service dog with excellent training, compassion, and high quality housing and meals during the training period. The new facilities for the puppies and dogs in training are of the highest quality and every effort is made to ensure the dogs have the best care and plenty of attention. As puppy raisers, our first puppy, Ranger, has been matched to an Iraqi Army veteran. They have fallen in love and Ranger will provide a great service to him. I eventually went to the Division of Blind Services to apply for rehabilitation and in the file was an application for a guide dog. Without hesitation, I applied. It was the best decision I ever made. Southeastern Guide Dogs mean what they say, and says what they mean. ALL their services to their students are at NO COST. They have a gorgeous campus, providing housing and meals, training and all the equipment needed for a successful handler/dog team. I’ve recieved 3 dogs from them. After my time in the Marine Corps as a combat veteran with buried memories of wartime.
I was able to keep them hidden for many years.
That all changed several years ago and in a really bad way, after being told I was suffering from PTSD along with depression.

Those were very dark days for me. I would go nowhere but the VA clinic for my appointments.
And only go to the grocery very early or late at nite.
It was no life, no friends, no wife. Just existing with no end in site.

I had thought of leaving this world that I did not understand.

After getting in the program that the VA was offering it actually brought some light into my dark days of a miserable life.

My Doctor told me that a service dog would possibly be very helpful in my recovery.
She gave me Southeastern Guide dogs phone number.
I called, filled the paperwork out and received several positive phone calls from them, and then a home visit.
Fast forward I got my service dog as the school allowed me Recon as my partner in life. We got close quickly and has been by my side over 3years now.

This has changed my life, gave my confidence back. I am still in treatment but at a much lower treatment level. I smile again.

We have been on out of state trips. We go out to eat with ease. She likes going to church.
We are planning a few R V trips this summer. In short, she has given me my life back.

It is impossible to find the words to explain my gratefulness to all who are involved in helping so many lost Veterans getting out of the dark. You have my support for life for I am a believer in this Great organization. Thank you all

I have been working for Southeastern Guide Dogs for a number of years I would say 11 or 12 as a volunteer. I worked with the puppies when they were 6 weeks old, worked with them when they were just about 6 days old and older puppies. You could not ask for a better nonprofit organization they train these superheros to help many many people, people with no vision where they can live new lives and be independent and very safe with our great dogs, service men and women with lives that keep out of the limelight because of PDS and our superheros help them to go out and enjoy life again. Plus they have other very useful careers to help children and elderly where can a person go to have such smart well trained dogs where you can go out into the world again and enjoy life with your friends and family. My experience over the years was seeing so many people with these beautiful smiles when they leave the school knowing they are safe going out into the world happy and safe.

My family have been puppy raisers with Southeastern for many years. Although they are in Florida and we are in Texas, the amount of support they supply (including via an AMAZING regional manager!) has made this a wonderful experience that we have come back to year after year - we've raised 6 puppies and have already signed up to raise our 7th for the coming year!!! We have been proud to work with SEGD, and been lucky enough to help train dogs that have gone on to careers helping visually impaired people and veterans. A GREAT organization.

I recently retired after 45 years in the educational profession and was looking for an opportunity to volunteer with an organization that served and helped those in need. Southeastern Guide Dogs has exceeded my expectations in allowing me to be involved in raising and training dogs to assist sight impaired individuals and therapy dogs for veterans. I volunteer in the Puppy Kindergarten taking care of the young pups and have learned so much from this outstanding organization. The standards and regulations for the program are exceptional. Staff/volunteer training is exemplary and support is unconditional. I’m honored to be involved in such a worthwhile endeavor.

I share this message with each of you that may have a child or loved one suffering with vision loss or PTSD. Southeastern Guide Dogs has transformed my life from being more and more dependent upon others during the process of hereditary vision loss. At one point in my life, I even had a red and white cane this is used by the blind to navigate. This is where most people's stories end. This is where my story begins. I met Southeastern through a close friend involved with the Lions Club and worked with another close friend to submit my application. I shared with many of my co-workers "what am I going to do with a dog?" Now, the question is "what won't I do with a dog?" My superhero's name is Malcolm. A no-strings attached gift from Southeastern Guide Dogs. This gift in my family is known as the gift that keeps on giving. Consider reaching out to Suzy Wilburn or Allison to start the admission process for your loved one.

Southeastern Guide Dogs has transformed my life for the better. They have given me back my independence. The trainers at the campus are some of the most dedicated and hardworking group of people. You leave the campus with a few more family members. The classes are designed to help those with visual impairments to better gain their independence. The students are put through training that will help them better navigate through different settings from malls to restaurants, to trails in the country or through the city. Each student is given their own rooms that are very clean and neat and come with a house keeper. The food is great and the atmosphere is just like being at home. Highly recommended for those with visual challenges and veterans suffering from PTSD.

I am a Vietnam vet that has been fighting PTSD before i came home on 6/24/1971. I requested help getting a service dog after i saw a young vet at the Melbourne, Fl Vet center. I was stunned when I saw that team work.
Kim came to our home for an evaluation. It was decided because of my problem walking a ESA would be best.
I met my dog on 07/24/17. I knew I was getting a Black Lab but nothing else. I was born in Wash., D. C., raised in the outskirts in MD, went to High School in D.C. and was a Wash. Redskins fan my whole life. What would be my dog's name? Yes! DALLAS is his name. Does God have a sense of humor?
I love Dallas. I don't know what I would do without him. Since I have gotten him he has gone everywhere with me. People always stop us and tell me how they wished their dogs were as well trained. When I go to the VA for appointments there is at least one vet asking where I got him. I always tell them to contact Southeastern Guide Dogs.
Like I said I love my dog and Southeastern Guide Dogs!

The volunteers I met at the Sarasota gift shop were so nice! They were excited about meeting us snd our guides. We came in from the blistering heat and they had cool drinks and snacks. One volunteer gave the ladies a manicure before our graduation. The puppy raisers were... My heros. JP ( my guide) has such great manners and is well adjusted. We often hear people say – you don’t know what you don’t know. I grew up around dogs, and as an adult with children we had plenty of dogs as pets. Of course, I knew dogs were smart, and that a dog could be trained for all sorts of duties. What I didn’t know is how much value would be added to my life after I lost my sight by having a guide dog. I know that I was given a true gift when I received a dog raised by well-trained , loving puppy raisers and truly qualified guy dog handler‘s. I recommend south eastern guy dogs to all people who need the services of a guide animal.

I am a disabled veteran with ptsd and was so blessed to be helped by Southeastern. My service dog Mikey helps mitigate my disability in so many ways. And there was no cost to me. At all. Having a service dog as a non-traditional “treatment” would have been financially out of my reach. I am healthier today and take less medication because of his influence in my life. All because hundreds of angels in blue Southeastern shirts decided to really support the troops; with action, not just words. I am forever in their debt.

I am a puppy raiser for Southeastern Guide dogs (SEGD). I am on my 6th puppy. Unfortunately, my little guy tore his ACL and will not be able to used as a service dog. This unfortunate event showed me how dedicated SEGD is to their dogs welfare, as well as to providing excellent guides to their graduates. They are performing the surgery to correct the ACL so that the puppy can be put up for adoption with a good chance at a normal life. When you raise these puppies you fall in love with them. It is comforting to know that they have every chance to live a good life whether as a service dog or as someone's pet if they can not make it as a service dog.

Hello, I am JeanAnn and my guide dog, Sarge, and I are a team and Sarge has changed my life and I am so grateful to Southeastern Guide Dogs for the training and hand holding love I have experienced from them.
Sarge is my first guide dog and at age 80, I am no spring chicken but with Sarge at my side we together conquer the MARTA transportation system in Atlanta. Sarge and I have been in 15 different airports and amazingly he has found me the ladies restroom in each location. This might seem a simple task but when you cannot read signs -this is an extremely important job he does for me - we even end up visiting these facilities even when I have no desire to go but Sarge thinks it is important.
From becoming blind and retreating from most travel and meetings with others, Sarge has truly been life changing in giving me back my independence. Thanks SEGD, you are awesome!

My experience began in 2007 when my womens group visited the campus and we decided to raise money to sponsor and name a puppy. She ended up becoming a breeder for Southeastern and we followed her journey. Then I became a Volunteer Puppy Raiser for Southeastern Guide Dogs. What a positive and life changing experience. Best training ever and we became a family of like minded Raisers. I am still a donor and part of the puppy raising family. The mission and passion and purpose of this organization is beyond compare. When we first relocated to Florida, we met and befriended a couple on Bradenton Beach. The gentleman friend was visually impaired and had his guide dog Levet. We saw how Bill' s world was made so available to him because of Levet. He encouraged us to look into puppy raising at Southeastern Guide Dogs in Palmetto Florida. Unbeknownst to Bill, we not only looked into raising, but took the required training to be a puppy raiser, and received our first pup, Tangerine. We met them for lunch, arriving with Tangerine....there wasn't a dry eye in the place! Tangerine went on to be placed with a wonderful, visually impaired gentleman from South Carolina. Attending the visitation that day, just before graduation, we were 'proud parents', watching our own Tangerine proudly guide Frank through their course on campus. We, as all puppy raisers, volunteer our service to raise these pups for the first year of their lives, then see them go IFT; In Formal Training, for 6-8 months before being matched with their new partner. As any child leaving the 'nest', we were proud, but we cried, both tears of pride and the knowledge that the pup, would now become someone else's, to guide them, love them, give them the courage the visually impaired person or veteran needs to go out into the world, and be loved in return. Our hearts swelled with pride! Knowing that the individuals receiving these well trained dogs, do so at no cost to the individual receiving the dog; their training, room and board are all provided free of charge, NO one is denied a dog because one cannot afford one. Imagine the feeling when you tell people as you raise these puppies, that someday this pup will help someone in need, and no, there is no cost. It is all done by very generous donations of money and time.
We are now raising our sixth pup, and we fall in love with each and everyone, and yes, we cry with each pup as it returns to campus, but we will continue to raise these wonderful puppies as long as we can, so that individuals, be it visual impairment or PTSD, or any other capacity the pups can learn to do to help people. We have raised six, but some individuals have raised far more, and others fill other important roles at Southeastern Guide Dogs. Remember, it takes a village to raise a SEGD pup!
PS my husband and I believe so much in this organization, we recently sold our home and moved closer to their campus so we could be more involved with them.

I have had the privilege of raising six puppies for Southeastern Guide Dogs. The support offered to puppy raisers was available twenty four hours a day. Caring Area Coordinators and Regional Managers were there to instruct and monitor the puppies as they grew.
Puppy Raising Services kept us aware of when vaccinations and immunizations were needed. We were informed with more than enough notice when our puppy was ready to go In For Training.
While the dogs continued their training with the school’s professional trainers,
we raisers were kept abreast of how they were progressing with a monthly report card.
I have never been involved with anything that had so many caring people involved.

My volunteer service with Southeastern Guide Dogs began in 2016, when I first relocated to Florida. Since that time, I have learned so much, and have had the pleasure of working with truly exceptional individuals, who are totally committed to the inspirational mission of the organization. I am inspired the minute I arrive on the campus. There is a pervasive spirituality there, and I know many others experience it, too. I have qualified to volunteer in several areas, and in each setting, I see professionals working at the highest standards, bringing their joy an their commitment to their work every day. The Volunteer Department does an exceptional job recognizing the work of the volunteers, and everyone feels truly appreciated. I feel fortunate to have a role in the village it takes to turn these exquisite superheroes into guide dogs, service dogs, and superb companions. I have had the pleasure of meeting lovely people who have become my friends, and with whom I do truly satisfying work on the campus. After returning home from serving in the U.S. Army I was reduced to a shell of a man due to combat related disabilities. I immersed myself in work trying to forget about the past. But after many years, this took its toll on my family since I could not go to a crowed place with them; I could not go to a loud place with them; I could not go shopping with them or out to eat on their birthdays. I then watched a YouTube video about how service dogs help veterans like me get back out in the world and through my exhaustive searching, to include the V.A., I landed on Southeastern Guide Dogs, Inc.. Not only did they accept me, they provided me with my companion (Brenna -- a yellow Labrador), a place to reside during the ten days of on-site training, three meals a day, transportation to and from the airport and around town, and regular follow-up visits to my out of state home...they did all of this at no cost to us (me, we), the veterans of this great nation, to those of us that have seen the worst life has to offer, weather in combat, in training, or through the lowest acts of humanity. I am forever grateful to Southeastern Guide Dogs Inc. as I would not have otherwise been able to get what they provided anywhere else (that includes my daughters statement 'I can't wait for dad to come home so I can take him to the mall'). My family has been a puppy raiser family since 2009. I've always loved how dogs can add to our lives in ways we may never understand. In addition to providing guide dogs for visually impaired, this school changes the lives of Veterans, Gold Star Families and many others. I know that my family has been touched by every single dog that has come thru our doors. Right now we have a career changed goldador. The other day I was watching a video of our Gold Star Families and realized it was not what I should be watching as my son prepares for his 1st deployment for the USMC. Our career changed dog was on the lanai and immediately barked to be let in. She came to my side and rested her head on my lap during the entire video and stayed by me for awhile longer. If any of us are ill, she is right by our side and will not budge.

My experience with southeastern guide dogs is as a volunteer.
I’ve worked in the training kennels, where ,as the name suggests ,the dogs in training are prepared for their careers as guide or service dogs .
There I observed the wonderful relationship of the dogs to their professional trainers.
The caring staff ,and the wonderful volunteers who are always ready to
Say... I can do that. I can help. Days , holidays ,rain or shine.
The Puppy Acadamy is where the dogs are whelped . Always with a staff person quietly welcoming the new pups.
I’m VOLUNTEER in the puppy nursery . And with prior training I follow and socialize
these pups who will be going on the puppy kindergarten .
Where they learn some very important behavior ....like walking on a leash and following simple commands
Then they are off to a Volunteer Puppy Raiser who opens her heart and home
To this special puppy , who will return to our campus to be trained to be, what we call, a super-hero.
And I should mention , this is all accomplished as a non-profit. We never charge
the recipient of these life changing dogs ,as they’ve been called, any
money .
I am so very proud to say I am a volunteer at SEGD.

My wife and I have raised 7 puppies for Southeastern Guide Dogs. Two of the puppies we raised went on to become working guide dogs and are a great help to the people they were matched with. Two other puppies became Ambassador Dogs for Southeastern, and one became a bomb-sniffing police dog. We have had the opportunity to meet and hear several graduates (some who are visually impaired and some who are veterans with PTSD) who told how much these dogs have helped them and how great Southeastern has been to them. Southeastern provides the dogs and their services for free to the recipients! And they don't receive government support. They are a great organization that trains dogs to help the visually impaired and veterans. The thing that has impressed us most is that these dogs are not only become guides & helpers, they become best friends of the people who receive them.

I became involved with Southeastern Guide Dogs 6 years ago. I was approached by a tenant who had an employee who wanted to raise a future guide dog puppy and bring the puppy to work. After seeing her work with two puppies, how well behaved the dogs were, how she not only taught the puppy basic obedience but also taught that other tenant's and staff here the rules of approaching a guide dog. After I obtained my first personal dog and saw how he changed the dynamics of our family we decided that we would become puppy raisers. I just picked up puppy #6 and my new happy place is being on campus with my new extended SEGD family and I value this experience that is the greatest accomplishment I have achieved and I will be forever changed.

They are the real deal and not trying to push animals out the door for money. I am not easily impressed but they are 5 star in all facets. They check on Flounder and myself twice a year to make we are both still functioning as a team properly. Flounder and I take our yearly ADI standard test. This all shows how not only do you receive excellent care when on campus but the follow up speaks volumes. I have been a volunteer for Southeastern Guide Dogs for over 10 years. During that time, I've had some life-changing experiences. Raising a puppy for the guide dog program has to be #1 on the list. Perhaps the most rewarding and fulfilling experience ever! To realize that the time and energy one expends to nurture, love and train that little ball of fur into an adult dog that provides hope, independence and freedom to its recipient, is without question, a heartwarming and transformational experience. Now, as a campus tour guide, I have the distinct pleasure of sharing the Southeastern story with our campus visitors. What truly makes my volunteer time at Southeastern such a pleasure, is the fact that every volunteer is genuinely appreciated and acknowledged for their efforts - not just occasionally, but continually. Something that I've not experienced with other organizations for whom I also volunteer. Our student recipients receive a world-class experience and a world-class dog - without cost to them - making Southeastern Guide Dogs a truly magical place!

Southeastern Guide Dogs not only treats you like a king when you are with them with their 5 star accommodations and food service but with their top of the line trainers and best in class dogs. Southeastern Guide Dogs is an execlent stewart of their financial contributions and make the recipients of their grace able to revive their dogs free of charge. As a combat veteran and a father of a large family I would have had no ability to pay for Jannus my now 3 year old yellow lab. Thank you Southeastern Guide dogs for all that you do.

My husband has a guide dog from SEGD. And what a transformation it has made. He is a veteran that lost his vision gradually due to an infection he picked up in Vietnam that affected his Optic nerves. It took him a long time to accept the fact that he needed a Dog but once he did what a difference it made in his life and mine. I saw him regain his independence and pride. He received his dog and training at no cost to us. SEGD doesn’t receive government assistance but rely on the generosity of many people who donate funds and their time. I now am giving back as well by volunteering in the puppy academy which brings me much joy and happiness that I can do my small part. What an awesome organization!

I think SEGD is one of the most amazing organizations I have ever had the privilege to work with! It is a highly professional, committed, and extremely effective entity. Not only the staff, but also the volunteers, are a dedicated, competent group of professionals who are committed to excellence. The care and intelligence with which they treat and handle the dogs is exemplary. Their dogs are first class and are a bridge of hope, inspiration and transformation for their students. The dogs are wonderful. I love the time I'm able to spend playing with the puppies, helping them to become socialized and ready to go home to a puppy raising family.

Attention to detail is evident everywhere - in the communication, training, design and upkeep of the facilities. Southeastern Guide Dogs is exemplary.

While still in Chicago, my wife and I started a NFP to help veterans with PTSD or Traumatic Brain Injury by providing the with service dogs, free to the veterans. When we moved to Sarasota we were excited to have an opportunity to work with Southeastern Guide Dogs and continue our work to help injured veterans. We have never worked with such a thoroughly professional organization. Every initiative shows great attention to detail. But the main impression that one gets is that all the SEGD staff, volunteers and donors feel they are part of a special family. Went for a tour of the Southeastern Guide Dog facility in Palmetto, FL on Monday!!! What a wonderful facility!!! I took the Behind the Scenes tour which was led by Cathy M. The campus is under construction but we were able to see the puppies, the onsite clinic for the dogs, the gift shop and training rooms for the puppies. I watched a couple of the trainers working with dogs and training them on curbs. Much paitience and love was exibited by each of the trainers and the dogs looked eager to please. The facility is very clean and open with lots of smiling faces of volunteers and staff!!! I can't wait to go back again and hope I can volunterr there at some point!!!

Our story with this wonderful nonprofit began over 20 years ago when we ran into a couple who were puppy raiser volunteers at a football game in Texas. We were immediately intrigued with it all and began to make calls and do our research. Fast forward 6 months later and we were waiting to receive our first puppy to raise for SEGD! His name was Miles and he was half golden retriever and half labrador retriever--we call them goldadors at SEGD! That was the beginning of our 20 years of dedication at this point to SEGD. We are currently raising our 10th puppy -a yellow lab named Millie, we fundraise each year and participate in the Walkathon fundraiser they host and we donate directly to the building campaigns and various needs of the school since all of these trained wonderful dogs are given at no cost to those who are in need of them. In addition, my husband served on their Board of Directors for 10 years and was the Chairman as well for a portion of that. He has rotated off due to term limits not due to not wanting to continue to serve. All who know us know of our love for this organization and the work that they do and we are proud volunteers. We are supported by a great team in Puppy raising services there at the school and a network of raisers in our community and we support each other in various communities through our own Puppy Raising page on Facebook. The stories we hear from our graduates after they spend time on campus and with our dogs are so heartwarming and it is a volunteer job that truly makes you feel like you have become a part of a great big dog loving and people serving family. Of course we are asked how can we give these puppies back when their next phase is about to begin and we would lie if we said it was not hard. However, we love these puppies, we do not need them like those who apply to SEGD do and it is our reward to see the silly, wiggly puppy we once knew become a superhero to their new owners giving them independence and love all the way. If you are looking for a nonprofit to support with your time or your financial commitment you can look no further--SEGD is TopDog!

It's hard to find words to describe how gratifying it is to know that you are raising a beautiful superhero to be. And, at the same time, get constant puppy love. Your puppy will come with a manual - with plenty of detail. And you will have support of SEGD and your area "family" of puppy raisers.

My wife and I recently had the great pleasure of visiting the Southeastern Guide Dogs facility in Palmetto Fla. To say that we were impressed is an understatement. The facility is really a university for the " Superheroes" ( as these wonderful dogs are affectionately called). Along with 5 other visitors,we enjoyed a wonderful hour with a group of 8 week old puppies in "The Puppy Kindergaten Adventure"- my wife was in heaven. At about 10 weeks these puppies will go to puppy raiser families, where they will spend the next 15 months or so, before returning to university. It is here where they will go through the intensive training of becoming a guide dog for the blind, companion for a vet with PTSD or many other valuable services. Some, who do not "graduate" go on to be breeders. Another impressive service is that the new "patients" are house at the center while training with their new BFF. There is currently construction underway, which when complete, will house new traing and veterinary facilities. Non of this receives any government funding. All funding comes from private or corporate donations, in addition to about 135 on "staff" there are about 500 volunteers, making it all the more impressive. The Southeastern Guide Dogs facility is a "must see" for anyone living in or visiting the Bradenton/Sarasota area.

My daughter and I are about to turn in our second puppy to Southeastern Guide Dogs. We are puppy raisers and just want to encourage others to help out this amazing organization. We initially were drawn to Southeastern for puppy hugging. Imagine sitting on the floor of a room and somebody releasing a litter of eight-week-old puppies! Oh my goodness, we were smitten! After a session of plentiful puppy kisses, we knew we wanted to be a part of this. Yes, initially we were drawn in for the puppies but after learning about what Southeastern does to help veterans, my husband and I being veterans as well, we knew we wanted to help in any way we could. Over the last two years, we have seen the difference these dogs make in the lives of other military families. Southeastern does all of this at no cost to the families matched with these amazing dogs. When we take our pups out, the most frequent question is how can you give them up and that that person could never do it. If you choose to do so, you can fill out the paperwork ahead of time and the day your pup goes in for training, you can go home with another pup...that day! The pup you turned it will always be in your heart but puppy kisses help heal a sad heart! You'll receive updates on the pup and will be so excited to hear all that these pups accomplish. Then, when you finally hear how the pup is changing lives, you will be so proud. Thank you Southeastern for letting us be a part of this amazing process.

My name is Cathy. I recently “graduated” as a student being the handelar. I am Blind and have recently had an eye removed. I had lost my confidence for walking alone and had to have someone go with me. I love being outdoors and having to stay indoors more was really getting me down. Southeastern guide dogs trained me to be with my new dog companion. Their facility is beautiful and the food was awesome. The school provided and tended to all of my needs while the dog trainers trained me. That my friends was no easy task. The trainers were patient, knowledgeable, and tough on me at the same time. They brought the real world come alive when we went to the various cities for using and implementing what we practiced as far as crossing the street safely. The trainers taught and made us experience every facet of walking that they knew and to be confident and successful again in the real world setting. Their support services are awesome as well.
I encourage anyone whom is visually impaired to learn to be free again to visit the school. The are non profit and funds come by way of donations, fundraisers, and endowments.

My husband said "ok, we can get a dog." We are retired and love to travel internationally. That made having a dog difficult and seemed unfair to the dog. Then one day we were working the 2012 Presidential election. In walked a couple with an adorable puppy wearing a blue coat. They were volunteer puppy raisers, and the pup was from Southeastern Guide Dogs. They allowed us to pet the puppy and told us all about the program - including the fact that you keep a puppy for about a year. That was all it took.

We checked them out on Charity Navigator and visited the campus for a tour. After seeing the campus and hearing about the mission, plus petting puppies, we were hooked. We began attending meetings in our local community and, after reading the manual, handling puppies at meetings, and passing background checks and a home visit, we were allowed to begin sitting for puppies. We had them for a few hours, then overnight, a weekend, a week, and finally a month. They were black, brown, and yellow Labs, every one with a different personality. We felt ready, so we applied for our first guide dog. What a joy it is to raise a puppy for this organization. The level of support we receive is impressive - a manual, meetings, videos, plus a wealth of knowledge from other raisers - all from people dedicated to puppies with one goal of delivering well socialized dogs ready to learn how to become a guide dog or service dog.

Yes, you fall in love with them. Yes, it's hard to give them up. For us, seeing our first pup as a guide dog with his handler was so gratifying. Of course, we did it again - after a trip abroad. And now again for a third time - after another trip abroad. We've had a yellow, a black, and now another yellow Lab. They've all been different. They've all been fun. They've all been challenging and rewarding at the same time. Watching these pups grow into confident dogs ready for their next challenge is the reward for volunteers like us.

I am a first time ‘Puppy Raiser’ for Southeastern Guide Dogs, raising the most intelligent and overall wonderful puppy, Papa Bear. From the first meeting attended before receiving and being matched with Papa Bear, the many one on one sessions with my Area Coordinator, and the frequent semi-monthly meetings where all puppy raisers learn and practice new behaviors, acclimate the pups to exposures, environments, and experiences that are a learning experience for both raisers and the pups, it has been an overwhelmingly positive and family like experience. As raisers we’re guided and shown that our job raising a future guide dog is of utmost importance. The support and coaching we receive from every volunteer and staff member along the way has been an inspiration and motivation to continue this role for this wonderful organization and all their special ‘super heroes’ in fur coats.

The Most Extraordinary Non Profit Experience Ever!

I retired after a 20 year career in fundraising leadership at the Ohio State University, I can honestly say Southeastern Guide Dogs is a “Top Tier” non profit organization. When I moved to Fort Myers I was looking for the opportunity to become involved with a non profit in the Fort Myers community. I researched charities and reviewed information on various charity websites. Southeastern Guide Dogs (SEGD) is financially responsible with donors funds and they do an amazing job thanking their volunteers and donors. Providing guide dogs to the visually impaired and service dogs to veterans free of charge with no government funding is truly remarkable. From a donor perspective SEGD does a great job of showing their appreciation and conveying their thanks. The leadership at SEGD understands the importance of giving back. Volunteers and donors give of their time and financial resources while the people at SEGD give independence and freedom to so many by training these amazing dogs.

Becoming a volunteer puppy raiser has been without a doubt the most rewarding experience of my life. Becoming a donor has been equally rewarding because I know my investment in SEGD is truly making a difference not only in Florida but across the United States. I plan to continue my involvement with SEGD for years to come.

My husband and I moved to Florida eight years ago. We were involved in some organizations in Connecticut for many years. Coming here in Florida was a big move for us but we wanted to become part of the community as well as doing good works. Southeastern Guide Dog has been an adventure! We are now on our sixth puppy, made lots of friends, visit nursing facilities, elementary schools, veteran groups and chair our local Walkathon. This organization has it all, a great staff, accountability for it's spending, a very worthy cause helping the visually impaired , veterans and their families, Veteran Hospitals, Florida Fish and Wildlife and Florida Rescue and so much more. I've attached a photo of our current puppy Wyatt. As a Puppy Raiser we keep our puppy for a year, teaching him house manners and about 30 commands before returning him back to the schools to the professional trainers. When the sight impaired person comes to the school for three weeks of training they are treated with the utmost respect and dignity. The dogs and the training are at no cost to them. Thank you Southeastern Guide Dog for letting us be part of your great organization.

When dogs are evaluated, it is always the same question...what is best for the dog? Our dogs love the work they are chosen for or they would not be selected for the particular job. I have been a puppy raiser for Southeastern guide dogs for about 8+ years. I have raised 6 dogs for the school and hosted countless others. The people I have met over the years who have been touched in some way by SEGD have been many. I have heard countless stories of how these dogs have changed their lives for the better. Freedom dignity and confidence has been regained thanks to all the amazing volunteers and staff at SEGD. It has also been an amazing journey for my family. My 3 children have watched pups come and go. They have seen the amount of training, time and love that is necessary to create these superhero dogs. They have also had the honor of meeting the people that the dogs we raised are helping. They get to see that our hard work with these dogs has contributed to something so important. A gift that will change a strangers life forever. The sadness at sending our dog back for training quickly fades when they get to see the good this dog goes on to do. (And the arrival of a sweet new puppy each year doesn’t hurt either) We are very proud to be a part of this organization.

My husband and I are ready to pick up puppy number 3 to raise another superhero for Southeastern Guide Dogs School!

The first puppy that we raised has already been matched with his forever person, who could not be more happy with him.

Our second puppy is in training in Guide Dog University! We hope he will do fantastic things!

SEGD is a wonderful organization. They have thought of details that we never could have regarding training for their superheroes. Being part of the village that it takes to mold these puppies is very rewarding. Seeing the people who have their lives changed by having a Guide Dog is truly heartwarming.

People think it is hard for puppy raisers to “give up” the puppy. That I will miss the dog is my own selfishness. The dog will be fine! He goes off to college to learn his career! Knowing that this young dog will be with someone in need of its loyalty and skills to vastly improve their quality of life gives solace to me. I will soon raise another puppy and begin the process over again!

My family is currently raising our sixth puppy for Southeastern Guide Dogs. We are definitely hooked, and Southeastern is the only organization we would want to raise for. Raising guide dog puppies, especially for the blind, is a big responsibility and it comes with big rewards. The school sees that we have everything we need to make raising for them a great experience. It starts with a great puppy gift bag/backpack at puppy pickup, followed by gorgeous photos of our pups at six weeks. They make vet visits a snap with their contract with our local vet that allows the school to be billed directly (no small thing!). We have so much help all along the way through bi-monthly meetings, manuals, videos of all the training, help from field trainers that will come to our home to work on problems, and an area coordinator that will come pick us up in the middle of the night to help us take a pup to the vet if need be. They show great concern for us when our dogs go back with their "In for Training/Guide Dog U" program all aimed at comforting the raiser through a difficult time. They follow up with news, training reports, and more great photos of our adult dogs while in training . The school makes sure that Puppy Raiser Day is a great day as we meet the blind person that gets matched to our dog—the most rewarding day of the year! They provide us with a brunch, a chance to see our dogs at work, and time to get to know the person that gets matched to our dogs, and of course, more pictures. And even though the staff do many Puppy Raiser Days throughout the year, it feels as though they are experiencing it for the first time with us.

I was also lucky enough to have an opportunity to attend an area coordinator conference for two days. I was one of ten fortunate people that got to spend the night in the new student dorms (awesome). In addition to being another great informative program, with great food, I was pleasantly surprised with a deeper understanding of the wonderfully helpful, kind, and non-judgmental attitude of everyone at the school in general. From their incredibly kind treatment of the dogs to their "people are just doing the best they can" approach, I felt such a sense of belonging and so proud to be a part of an organization that thinks like this.

I've had other volunteer jobs in schools and church, but nothing can compare to the wonderful dogs, the people at school, and the people we meet along the way all because of Southeastern Guide Dogs.

This nonprofit provides dogs for people to use as guide dogs as well as provides dogs for veterans who suffer from PTSD. I have been a volunteer puppy raiser for this organization since 2004 and am currently raising my 10th puppy for them. It is one of the best run nonprofits I have ever seen! Every resource is used frugally and the entire organization works as a happy team to provide a much needed service (dogs!) free of charge to those who need them. The organization continues to provide services to the recipients for life! In fact, when a guide dog retires, they will provide another guide dog. They go out of their way to help everybody involved in the organization -- from volunteers like myself to guide dog recipients. This nonprofit operates like a large happy family. I am proud to be associated with it.

I began volunteering for Southeastern Guide Dogs 22 years ago. I began as a puppy raiser welcomed by a group of seasoned puppy raisers. Several years down the road I was asked to be an Area Coordinator for the puppy raiser group in my area.
Raising puppies turned out to be the perfect volunteer job for my family. My husband and I felt strongly about teaching our children the importance of helping others without expecting anything in return.
With help from experienced puppy raisers, a handbook describing the techniques used to train a puppy and a very supportive staff at Southeastern Guide Dogs, we began a rewarding commitment to raise a puppy. As puppy raisers, we accept the responsibility to teach good house manners, obedience skills and socialize the puppies to their community.
Our first puppy arrived and we immediately fell in love with a very young white fluff-ball named Streak. Despite our steep learning curve our family had a fun year raising Streak to become the best guide dog candidate possible. Before we knew it, the end of Streak's year with us came to an end and it was time to say good-bye. We soon learned all the lessons we taught (and learned) throughout the year were not nearly as difficult as we once thought. We would quickly realize the true meaning of difficult! The day we had to say good-bye to Streak was the purest definition of HARD. Our hearts were hurting and tears were shed over this wonderful dog we had come to love.
After returning Streak we knew our job was finished. It was now Streak's time to move forward and live up to her role as a super hero. Our hearts were overjoyed when we learned she was chosen to be among the best of the best. . .a breeder for Southeastern Guide Dogs! Streak went on to have several litters of beautiful puppies who would surely become the difference to others! Before heading back home to Texas, we decided to raise a new little ball of fur. Plus, there is nothing better to mend a hurting heart than a playful, wiggling, lovable puppy. We were now on our way to our second year of raising a Southeastern Guide Dog. We vowed we would be better raisers this time around for we were now experienced! This pattern of picking up a new puppy to raise for a year and returning the puppy at the end of the year became a twenty-two year pattern for us. The task of saying good-bye remains HARD, but we have learned there are many individuals who desperately need this super hero much more than we do. It has been a privilege to volunteer for Southeastern Guide Dogs and be a small part of their goal of changing lives, one dog at a time.
Our children have all grown up to become young adults, making their parents very proud. I continue our commitment to try and raise the best guide dog candidate possible. Sadly, the end of the year with our current puppy is quickly coming to a close, but I am excited to return to Southeastern Guide Dogs and begin a new, wonderful year with #23!
Southeastern Guide Dogs has grown to become a well respected guide dog school not only in our nation, but other countries as well. What a difference they have made to so many! I am very proud to be involved with their goal of providing independence and mobility to others.

I've worked with the puppies that are 6 to 10 weeks old teaching them to walk on leash, sit, stay, etc. And, of course, I get more than my share of puppy hugs and kisses. For a serious dog person, there can be no better volunteer opportunity for me than working with an endless supply of puppies. The single most important aspect of this organization is that they provide freedom to people who have lost it and they do so with volunteers and donations from the public - no grants, contracts or government support. The dogs, training and follow-up support are completely free to the recipient. It just doesn't get any better than this!

I got involved with Southeastern Guide Dogs about 4 years ago, when I decided to become a puppy raiser after retirement. My wife and I are currently raising our 3rd puppy, and the experience has been beyond rewarding. The organization is fantastic, both in its mission, and in its being. Everyone at the school is concerned with only one thing, and that is the breeding, raising, training, and placement of these invaluable dogs. The feeling of joy and contentment that I get every time I interact with Southeastern is beyond description.

I have been a Puppy Raiser for Southeastern for over 27 years and have raised 42 puppies for them. I have also been an Area Coordinator for the Jacksonville Florida area for over 25 years. Southeastern has alway been there if I need advise on raising a puppy or a shoulder to cry on when I give that puppy back to them. I have met and became friends with a lot of their graduates and the dogs they recieve are well trained and really give them the "Freedom" to go to places without help from other people. All at no cost to them to get that well trained dog. I love Southeastern for all they do to help someone have the Freedom to be a part of the world that most of us take for granted, Visionally Impared or a Veteran Serice Dog ALL their dogs are "Super Hero's"

I am a Volunteer Puppy Raiser for Southeastern Guide Dogs, and am completely smitten with this organization. They are completely devoted to their mission of providing highly trained guide dogs to the visually impaired, and service dogs for veterans. Their statement of providing dogs "For those who can no longer see, or those who have seen too much" just resonates so deeply with everyone engaged with the organization. Every decision they make keeps their mission front and center, is with purpose, and always with the well being of the puppies in mind. Their volunteers, such as us puppy raisers, are always made to feel appreciated and valued. We are given countless opportunities to see the value of our work first-hand, and any moment to help us understand and participate in the mission of Southeastern is recognized. I applaud Southeastern for all they do, and couldn't be happier to volunteer with such a mindful organization.

This is the best non profit organization I have ever known. They help the blind and the veterans with their lives by not only supplying them with a guide dog but bringing them in and housing them while training the person with their new companion. They do not charge the receipient and provide superb service and accommodations. They manage their funds wisely and have excellent facilities. The care and compassion shown to the staff, dogs, volunteers and receipient is phenomenal! A top rated agency — HANDS DOWN!

We are on our third puppy raising for Southeastern Guide Dogs and are raisers for life! Southeastern really involves you in the entire process of raising, training, and placing guide dogs. You get excellent support from staff and other puppy raisers during the raising stage. When your pup goes back to school you get to see them pop up on Instagram while they are doing their training and you receive regular training updates from the trainers. When the day comes to match them with their person, you are invited to campus to meet them with the option of staying in touch afterward. It's nothing at all like I've heard other schools are run where you raise a pup, take it back to school, and you're done. Southeastern cares about everyone involved!

My husband and I have had dogs in our lives forever and know how wonderful it is to be loved by a dog.. We thought it would be wonderful to be able to help give that feeling to someone else who may not be able to just go out and get any dog. We became puppy raisers for Southeastern Guide Dogs to help with their mission to give guide dogs to the blind. We were able to help out by working with a very sweet puppy for the first year of his life. Working with Southeastern is a wonderful experience. They are there to help you at all times. It is fun getting together with the other puppy raisers and their dogs, you feel like a big family. We did outings together, exchanged stories. Our own dog has had surgery lately, but when he is better we hope to be puppy raisers again.

I've been a volunteer here for a little over a year, and have accrued over 500 hours of service. Like most volunteers here, the initial draw for me was getting to work with the dogs; I mean, who wouldn't want to hang out with a kennel full of Labrador Retrievers!? However, it was about 4 months into my service there and I had my first opportunity to help "train" one of our Veteran classes. I role-played the part of a store manager at a mall who challenged the right of the person (who was here because he has PTSD) to have a Service Animal in public... afterall, he clearly wasn't blind.
The response of the first person I did this with sticks with me to this day, "Yes I can, it keeps me from hurting people" he said.
That was my "Ah Ha" moment. The moment I could really see what this organization was doing for people, and more importantly, what these dogs were doing for the people.
I'm proud to be affiliated with Southeastern Guide Dogs. Their mission of transforming lives is visible with every class that comes to campus to receive and train with their new dog.

My wife and I have been a "puppy raiser" with SEGD for the past seven years, we're on our tenth and eleventh puppies. The support we have received has been nothing short on fantastic. They are on top of every challenge our little friends throw our way. We have had "emergency" situations, where we have had to make a call on what to do without contacting them for guidance, and they have had our backs each and every time.

We have also worked with them on their last four walkathons. Their guidance, suggestions and pre-campaign information have led our campaigns to reach and exceed our goals all four years

100 out of 10! Nov 2015 I graduated with Lou, my third guide dog, from SEGD. The program has grown so much since I first attended back in 2001. I thought it was great back then, but now it's like a 5 star vacation, with the world's best guide dog at your side! Private rooms, excellent food (not the place to come and lose weight), superior trainers, still led by Rick who was there when I went for my first guide dog. The grounds are well organized for all our training needs. The graduation program we had was over the top, Lou and I felt like celebrities!
I recently tested out Lou's training, by going on a trip that included 4 airplane fights, 2 hotels, 10 bus rides, a riverboat, with multiple distractions and new environments everyday. A real testament to SEGD was Lou did great! She handled the pressure and stress beautifully, I never bumped into a thing, or got hurt, I was able to negotiate the ship safely and all by myself, once she learned the route! SEGD has given me freedom of mobility with three dedicated guide dogs (DeeDee, Destinee, and now Lou)!

I got my Hairy dog from South Eastern on February 17th 2015! It was one of the most special days of my life!

They have a knowledgeable warm staff there! And my dog, Hairy is just the best Guide Dog, and more than I hoped for!

The food there was excellent as well! They spoiled us with such good food! And the cooking staff was very nice, too.

Hairy is my 3rd guide dog, my other 2 coming from a school in Michigan. I loved those dogs too of course, but my Hairy is something special. I guess they all have a place in your heart, a different place as they all have different personalities, but he's so well trained, loving, and just a smart boy! I'm blessed to have him, and it is thanks to South Eastern guide dogs that I do! I would totally recommend this school to any blind person seeking a guide dog!

Southeastern Guide Dogs is the place to go if you are blind or visually impaired. Put the cane in the closet, make an appointment and get ready for a 5 star experience. You will gain knowledge from the excellent trainers and school mates. All with different eye problems and some who are completely blind.
You will gain a newfound friend and buddy with your dog. They are amazing and so very smart. The training staff, the puppy raisers, the vet center all have a hand in making your best buddy your second set of eyes.
Do not stay at home and shut in. Grab your harness and tell your buddy where you want to go . After a few trips he will take you right there.
What a great experience. Email or pick up the phone and call Southeastern Guide Dogs.

I was in class 232 in January of 2015 and have never been treated so well. I was very nerve routs about whether or not I would be able to learn to handle a guide dog. I t is way different from taking care of a pet. After 26 days I left with so much confidence because of the excellent training I received. Southeastern Guide Dogs is so totally commited to its true purpose of bringing freedom to individuals with impaired sight. The entire facility is devoted to the care and training of guide dogs. Every staff member has but one purpose, to further the ability of the school to make an individual's life better. When you speak to the individuals that recieve the service dogs you get the sense that a part of their life has been restored. The dogs are amazing also. From the time they are whelped until they are placed with an individual, they are loved and it shows in their expressions. When these dogs become part of a team it is clear that they are more than willing to work for their handler. it is easy to understand the impact this school has when an individual looks at you and says "I was able to walk into Starbuck's today, alone, and buy my own cup of coffee without relying on someone else to take me." What a simple pleasure to be so important. The freedom is priceless.

We are volunteer puppy raiser for Southeastern Guidedogs. We get the puppies at 9 weeks and keep them for about 1 year. In that year we take the puppies with us EVERYWHERE we go, from the grocery store, restaurants to going to the dentist. Anywhere a blind person might go... When a blind person gets matched with a dog, it is life-changing. It gives the blind person the freedom to go places on their own and have independence and dignity. One of our friends told us after she received her Guide dog that she was able to use a public restroom on her own for the first time since she had lost her sight. She told us that it gave her dignity back. How do you put a price on that? Our first dog had an injury and didn't make it to be a Guide dog but she was trained to be a Bomb/Arson dog instead. She 'reports' to the fire station in Orlando Florida, protecting people like you and me. Our 2nd dog we raised was chosen to be a Veteran Service dog for someone that served our country and returns from the war front suffering from PTSD. She will be a life-saving gift for someone who suffered this 'hidden wound' fighting for our freedoms. We are about half-way into raising our third dog. People often ask us how we give can give up a dog we have bonded with for the past year. And we answer; how can we not? It is a gift that we give to someone whose needs are more important than our wants. This would not be possible without Southeastern Guide dogs. We are grateful for what they do and are proud to part of that mission to assist others. And these gifts are always free to the recipient, thanks to generous individuals who share our passion to help others.

After retiring from my job as a professor of Public Health Nursing, followed by 5 years as a full-timer in a motor home, I found my days a bit empty. By chance, I learned that a college classmate did some volunteer work with an organization that trains dogs to become guides for visually impaired people. Animals are the passion of my life and dogs rank at the top of my list, so I immediately got in touch with Southeastern Guide Dogs and became a volunteer. I started out playing with adorable puppies ranging in age from 6 to 9 weeks. Soon I wanted to become a puppy raiser. After the necessary criteria were met, I was thrilled to be allowed to take home and help train a beautiful Goldador. When he did not make it as a guide dog due to a mild medical issue, I was offered the opportunity of keeping him and getting him trained as a therapy dog and Ambassador for the school. Natually I was eager to take on this privilege. I still volunteer in the puppy kennel, showing visitors how to behave and play with the irrisistible puppies. Now my dog & I also visit patients in hospitals and nursing homes. What joy it brings to these people--maybe almost as much as it brings to me when I see their faces light up. Another wonderful opportunity I have as part of a therapy team is going into a school where third graders get to read to dogs. Data collected around the US shows that this program does help children improve their reading skills. I'm very happy to know that I'm doing some good while I have an enormous amount of fun!

Having had a friend who was visually impaired, coupled with my love of dogs, becoming a Puppy Raiser for Southeastern Guide Dogs, Inc. was a no brainer! Southeastern Guide Dogs are located in Manatee Co., Florida. SEGD is a not-for-profit organization and receives no federal or state funds. It provides dogs and training to blind individuals, at no cost to them. The school relies solely on donations, I am so proud of being a part of this fantastic organization! As a first time Puppy Raiser the guide dog that I raised, recently graduated. I had the opportunity to meet the gentleman that received him, he was overwhelmed with gratitude at the thought of regaining his independence, never being alone again, and knowing his guide would keep him safe. I came away from this special meeting knowing that I was part of a truly wonderful organization, and that together we made a difference in this man's life! Would I do it again you ask? .....In a heartbeat!

My husband and I have raised three guide dog puppies for Southeastern Guide Dogs and are currently raising our fourth (http://mcleanpup.blogspot.com/), Coach. Southeastern has always been a great organization, but I think that in the last couple of years they have really upped their game. They have made amazing strides in communications with volunteers, with volunteer publications and videos, and with the puppy raising program. They have really improved the training program for their area coordinators so that flows down to the puppy raisers. Area coordinators now have two different training weekends that they go to in order to become ACs. They have also instituted a puppy raiser weekend. I missed it, but would love for them to have another. It was where they explained a lot of what was going on at Southeastern and helped you to be a better puppy raiser. I'm hoping they have it again. They have made it easier and more fun to be a puppy raiser for Southeastern. And with the amazing marketing campaign that they have going on, you are always proud to be walking with your dog in his/her blue coat out in public spreading the word about Southeastern and the good work they are doing. For example, they have updated the volunteer manual, they have created specific training videos for learning difficult commands, they have created a trainer run facebook group just for puppy raiser where we can post questions and get immediate (or nearly so) feedback on what is going on with our puppy, they created an IFT (in for training) day that made taking your puppy back into a celebration instead of a traumatic event. It was so lovely. My contructive criticism is that I wish they were a little more cognizant of working volunteers. Sometimes things are only done Mon-Fri 8-5 and most puppy raisers work and don't have the freedom to take off. Having a late day or a weekend day option would be awesome.

Southeastern Guide Dog went over and beyond our expectations. My husband lost his eye sight over a year and a half ago, a very difficult situation for not only him but for the entire family. As my husband attended classes at the Lighthouse for the Blind I began to search for Guide Dogs. There was one facility as close as Mississippi and as far as California. While searching the internet for many reasons Southeastern Guide Dog caught my attention more than others. The facility looked very clean, organized, the puppy cam was amazing, the details of the training were well explained and I was quite impressed about the detailed screening of the person that was to receive the guide dog. The next thing I knew I was filling out the application on line. What seemed like forever, after the background check took place, a kind professional person called to schedule an at home interview. About a month later a person came from Florida and interviewed my husband, took him for a walk with a harness and leash to measure his speed, strength and height. She looked at the home, answered our questions, played with our 2 boxers and told us they would be back in touch with us. A short time after we decided to go to Florida to personally visit the grounds. We were received by the staff and they gave us the tour. They actually put a harness on one of the guide dogs and let my husband walk with him. They made my husband feel like there was nothing more important in the world than him. It was the best thing that happened to him since he lost his sight. We prayed every day that he would be accepted by Southeastern Guide Dog. One day we received the magic phone call and he was asked if he could attend the class that started in October...Are you kidding, the scream of joy and tears were unavoidable. The day we arrived he was greeted by 3 professional trainers that entered his luggage and showed him to his dorm and helped him unpack and get comfortable . Amazing, his dorm had a large private bath, tv, closet, night stands, a large bed and a desk. He said he felt like he was in a 5 star hotel. Southeastern provided absolutely everything even the guide dog he needed at no cost what so ever to us. We could not have had Lucy if there was a cost involved. A Chef prepared the meals for the students, my husband had 3 of the most professional, kind, loving, understanding trainers and staff with him at all times. His 26 days there were the hardest but the most important days of his life. He not only learned to become more self dependent they taught him to trust his Guide Dog Lucy 100%. They are one when she has her harness on. Southeastern Guide Dog will always be in our hearts. It is so hard to explain what it means to regain your independence, to have Lucy at my husbands side 24hours a day. I trust Lucy with my husbands life thanks to Southeastern Guide Dog. They have opened a whole new meaning in our lives. Southeastern Guide Dog is a true non profit organization that knows how to treat and understands the persons coming for their guide dog in a very professional, loving, understanding way.

My husband and I have been volunteer puppy raisers for Southeastern Guide Dogs, Inc. in Palmetto, FL since 2010. We are raising our second puppy to become a guide dog for the visually impaired. Being involved in this organization has filled our hearts with joy and purpose. It is an endeavor that not only has changed our lives but one in which holds the promise to change the lives of the visually impaired. SEGDi is a top notch organization. Everyone we have met from puppy raisers, area coordinators, trainers, to the many volunteers on campus that answer the phones, walk the dogs, give tours, etc. are professional and have the same goal in mind. They are all focused on supplying the best possible service dogs to those who really need them. SEGDi supplies service dogs free of charge and is a non profit organization that is entirely supported by private donations and volunteer labor. They place guide dogs for visually impaired, companion dogs for veterans with PTSD, as well as companion dogs for underage youth, ambassador dogs for VA Hospitals, and are linked in to alternate careers in law enforcement in the event a dog cannot be placed in their program. They breed and raise their own puppies with 200-250 pups in their program per year. The puppy raising community spans across 7 states with satelite groups located throughout the southern and eastern USA. We are located in Angketon, Texas.

It all began with my looking into being a puppy raiser for Southeastern Guide Dogs, Inc. I had only lived in the area a couple of years, and had recently lost a cherished family dog when I filled out an application. As I love working with dogs, I presumed that being a puppy raiser would give me a puppy to work with while doing something good for another person. Along the way, I have made many new friends and have had many new experiences. I have also put in many hours, smiles and tears into raising a puppy, J.P., who recently became a guide dog. As a guide dog, J.P. is giving the gift of mobility, independence and dignity to a sight impaired individual. Working with J.P. enriched my life, but he is not completely transforming someone elses. What could possibly be better than that?

I've been involved as a Puppy Raiser volunteer for Southeastern Guide Dogs for over 12 years and as a member of the Board of Directors for 9 years. I've seen the organization go through tough times and good times. Through it all, they've maintained a high degree of integrity and positivity. I'm honored to be a part of this organization which changes lives in a very unique and individualized way - one dog and one person at a time. If you love dogs, this organization celebrates the elite of the service dog worlds. If your passion is helping people with one of the most challenging of physical challenges - loss of eyesight, this organization celebrates the abilities and independence of a population of America that is historically underserved. Your involvement with Southeastern Guide Dogs, as a volunteer, student, graduate or donor, is an experience that is life-changing.

Hi,my name is " mother marge" at least to the 10 week old puppies I raise, teach and love. I'm a volunteer Guidedog puppy raiser. I get to raise this so very important the basics of becoming a Guidedog for the visually impaired from 10 wks to 14 months. Many sleepless nights but many more puppy hugs and love and countless " looks" from those eyes...that just say I love you mommy...please don't make me get off the bed!! Kick out dad!! We go everywhere together, they are truly my best friend, we play and work together. We go to markets , hospitals, schools, banks, Restaraunt and more together and I wear my training coat. I have raised now 3 Guidedogs and all different & all amazing . Best charitable organization I know....plus 84 cents on the dollar you donate is spent on the programs, we do what we do because of Love in our hearts.

When I retired I knew I wanted to volunteer doing something completely different from the last 32 years I had spent as an educator and administrator at the high school level. I loved my work with young people but wanted to get outside and be more active. Plus I thought we should get a dog to keep us busy in our retirement. While attending a kayaking symposium, we met a couple who were puppy raisers for Southeastern Guide Dogs. Plus we met their Southeastern puppy, Mr. Magoo. I knew that this was the place I was meant to spend my "extra" hours. We began as a dog walker, exercising the dogs in for training. Some days we would help with the yard work on the campus. We were always welcomed with a friendly smile and thanked many, many times for the work we did. We joined a puppy raiser group and began preparing to raise a pup. Everyone was so helpful and friendly.

Being avid animal lovers, my husband and I finally committed ourselves to spend one afternoon a week helping out at this incredible organization. We have been volunteering at the puppy kennel since the end of May 2012. Our jobs have been to socialize the 6+ week old puppies by getting them used to a leash, collar, vest and different textures, sounds, and experiences. It is such a joy to finally do something that gives us complete pleasure and also benefits Southeastern. It is a win win situation, and we all gain something in the process. It is really tough to do this in the hot summer months in Florida, but the feeling of satisfaction we get from the experience makes up for the meltdown we experience during our volunteer hours in the hot, hot temperatures.

I began volunteering as a puppy raiser for Southeastern Guide Dogs in 1995 with Victor, a labador puppy. I have since raised 10 more puppies for them, and have learned more with each puppy I have raised. The school has area coordinators in each area to help the raisers, and each raiser receives support from the school. During the year you spend with the puppy you learn a lot about dog training and behavior, and you know you are making a big difference in someone's life. Not all dogs become guide dogs, if the dog does not become a guide dog it is evaluated for another area of service so that it will fulfill its purpose. I love being associated with this organization.

My daughter is a trainer at Southeastern Guidedogs in Palmetto, Florida. I have been there for hug a puppy and dog walking. If you are feeling down spend a day there and you cannot leave there in a bad mood. Impossible! Southeastern Guidedogs pairs the visually impaired, veterans (also with PTSD), children, and service organizations with a dog. The dog's training, medical care, food, etc. is at NO COST to the student. This organization is solely funded with donations. The trainers not only train the dogs but each student is housed and fed during class. In those weeks the students are taught by the trainers how to use and trust their companion, giving each one mobility and independence. A truly life changing event! Just watch this video and your heart is filled with joy at the sight of visually impaired getting around places they were not able to go to before. It is awesome!!

I have been a volunteer at Southeastern Guide Dogs for a little over 2 years. Without a doubt, this has been the most rewarding experience I have had in my life, except for the births of my children. I am now able to see the puppies I worked with in the Puppy Kennel 2 years ago graduate and go forward with their visually impaired person to start a brand new life for both of them. This always brings tears to my eyes to know that I have had a hand in helping the visually impaired person get freedom in their life because of their new guide dog.

I walk into the Puppy Kennel or the Training Kennel, depending on my assigned duties for that day, and have a huge smile on my face. The campus of Southeastern Guide Dogs is second only to Disney World as the HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH. When my day is finished, I leave with a smile as well. And, all the time I am on campus, I have a smile on my face. How could I not?

I talk with a lot of people during my daily duties. I explain what Southeastern Guide Dogs really does that the general public does not see. I will explain the devotion of the staff, volunteers, puppy raisers, our certified trainers, etc. The guests will stand there with their mouths open and look at me and tell me that they had no idea how much detail, work, love goes into providing a guide dog free of charge for a visually impaired person; from the puppy's birth, puppy socialization, puppy raising, harness training, training with their visually impaired person and finally.......GRADUATION DAY!!!!!! Because I have talked with the guests, a number of them have seen my enthusiasm and have now become volunteers themselves. That makes me feel good as I have been able to enrich Southeastern Guide Dogs with new volunteers as well as enriching the lives of these new volunteers.

The staff at Southeastern Guide Dogs is 5 star all the way, and are joined by all of the volunteers to make up one heck of a TEAM!!! If you are having difficulty with a particular task you are doing, and a staff member is in sight of you, he/she will be at your side in just a few seconds to lend a hand. A red flag doesn't have to be raised, a plea for help doesn't have to go out, your help is already standing next to you helping you get your task completed. TEAM WORK. This is what Southeastern Guide Dogs is built on. TEAM WORK!!!!!! This is the reason that Southeastern Guide Dogs is #1 and will strive to continue to maintain that rating.

As someone once said, "There is no "I" in TEAM. A wag of the TAIL to Southeastern Guide Dogs CEO and board members who have all helped to make Southeastern Guide Dogs a place you want to be, either as an employee, volunteer, guest, or, most importantly, a graduating visually impaired person with a guide dog.

As a puppy raiser for Southeastern Guide Dogs for nearly ten years, I have shed many tears as I've experienced the emotional highs and lows of this "profession." Relinquishing a puppy after a year together is as difficult as one might imagine, but seeing one's puppy guide a visually-impaired partner is gratifying beyond words. Southeastern has the highest regard for its dogs as well as its volunteers, and I am proud to be associated with its noble mission. Forward Together.

SEGD came into my life approximately 6 years ago. I was a legally blind veteran with strong mobility skills using a cane. From the time of my discharge from active duty my VIST coordinator at the VA hospital plus my wife had recomended me to get a guide dog. I did not think I needed a guide dog even though I had been struck by an automobile, breaking my leg plus stuck on public transportation for 3 hours because the driver forgot that I was blind. I still was reluctant to take on the responsibility of a guide dog. I wasn't really sure how one could benefit me. After 5 years of incidence of people yelling at me because I tripped them sticking my cane out in front of me and the incidence like above I finally filled out an application for SEGD. With reservations I started class a resident program, I lovingly call "doggy boot camp". I was matched with a beautiful intelligent dog named VAN. The ease at which I navigate, public transportation, shopping malls, etc. is a remarkable change from transiting such places with the white cane. People immediately see and recognize Van as a working dog. The people at SEGD couldn't have done a better job matching me with Van. Even when graduate services had sent out an instructor to my home when Van injured himself and was unable to work for a few months, the instructor worked with Van and I and got our focus back in order. They are always there to answer questions and provide assistance when needed. I can not say enough about the staffs professionalism and the quality of the facilities that they have. I can think of no other organization that can increase a visually impaired person's quality of life in such a great fashion. This service being provided to me at absolutely no cost to myself. SEGD opperates strickly on donations accepting no government funds.

At 68 years old I was told that I was legally blind and would eventually be totally blind by my ophthalmologist. I am a registered professional civil engineer with a lot of experience in construction and was not looking forward to being a person who couldn't perform every day activities. i signed up for a course at the local Manasota Lighthouse which exposed me to every day living skills for people with low vision or blindness. In that course I was exposed to many different agencies available to me and activities available to me to learn things to be active for the rest of my life. One of these agencies was Southeastern Guide Dogs. In this learning process I found that even though I had some vision left now was the time to apply for and obtain a guide dog who could help me find my way from one place to another safely. I set a goal to explore this and researched guide dog schools all over the United States. I found that I lived within 15 minutes of one of the best guide dog schools in the country, Southeastern Guide Dogs. I toured the campus, asked questions and was told that even though I had some vision I was entitled to a guide dog and if I desired one I should sign up to obtain one. I did this, attended the course, and received my first guide dog one year after I was found legally blind. During this course I was trained and treated with respect and dignity and was taught what the dog knew so that I could use the services of the dog intelligently and capably. Since that time we (the dog and I) have become completely bonded and work as team as we were trained by the trainers through this course. Since Graduation I have had occasion to use Graduate Services 2 times, each time they were ready, willing and able to travel to my site to assist me with training techniques to solve my problems. Again, always with dignity. Based on my experiences I would highly recommend Southeastern Guide Dogs as one of the, if not the, premier guide dog school in the United States.

I have been involved with Southeastern for more than a decade, beginning as a "puppy raiser" and now as a member of the Board of Directors. My time is scarce -- and the fact that I am connected with a Florida entity although I live in Texas I believe speaks to how much I value the work that SEGD does, and how effective they are in addressing the independence of the visually impaired. This is a charity that doesn't have a lot of money, but what they do have is the almost boundless enthusiasm of volunteers and a core group of staff that is extremely good at what they do. There is absolutely nothing as inspiring as hearing the story of someone who is visually disabled and has really been given their freedom back through the use of a guide dog. Great work being done by SEGD in Florida.

Blindness is a life altering disability. One must be dependent on others for even the basic needs, especially mobility. Our school breeds, raises and trains dogs to serve as guides and partners for our blind clients. These clients come for all backgrounds and lose their sight from illness, accidents, genetic conditions, and, tragically, as a result of war activities while serving their country. My involvement began with raising puppies for the school. I thought it would be great to be able to take a dog with me anywhere! After 18 months, Kandi, my first pup, was returned to school for training. Five months later, I met her blind owner, heard her story and realized I was doing so much more than raise a puppy. Four of the six dogs I have raised to date are working with their blind owners. The last, Angel, with a 26 year career Army Col, is allowing her owner to, truly, make a difference in the world. The cost of producing a dog who can guide is high, some say too high, relative to the needs of others in the world. Our Board and our organization is constantly looking for ways to improve our product, our service and keep our costs reasonable. A visit to the school is life changing. If lucky, the puppy kennel will be open for the popular public "puppy hugging" event. You will not be the same afterward.

Twenty-five years ago Southeastern Guide Dogs was a new nonprofit organization in my community. I was one of their first kennel volunteers in the first guide dog school for the blind in the southeast. My career, marriage, and son soon demanded a lot of my time and I drifted away from the organization only to return to the Southeastern Guide Dog Campus in 2008 as a Puppy Raiser. A Puppy Raiser is a person or family who takes a two month old puppy into their home and teaches it basic obedience and gives it socialization experiences. When the puppy is approximately 15 months old the Puppy Raiser returns the dog to the Southeastern Guide Dog Campus to begin it's formal harness training to become a guide dog for the blind. I was amazed at the vast improvements made to the SEGD campus in Palmetto, Florida during the years I was not active in volunteering. The 23 acre campus houses world class facilities to help reach it's mission of providing guide dogs to visually impaired individuals to facilitate life's journey with mobility, independence, and diginity. There are breeding kennels, training kennels, dormitories, a freedom walk for training, and an administration building. Visually impaired and blind individuals who are accepted into the program have the opportunity to receive a guide dog that was bred on campus, raised by a puppy raiser associated with SEGD, and trained on campus and in the surrounding Tampa Bay community all at no cost to them or their family. The class lives in beautifully furnished rooms on campus for 26 days while in training with their guide dog and their meals are prepared by an outstanding chef, again at no cost to them. Every opportunity is made to help the individual who has left their home for these 26 days to feel welcome. The estimated $60,000 to raise and train a guide dog is completely offset by private or corporate donations. The first puppy we raised, Scout, is a beautiful yellow Labrador Retriever with a big head and an even bigger heart. He was matched with a person who was blinded while on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces under the school's Paws For Patriots Program. Our family has such great pride that our efforts in raising Scout along with the SEGD professional trainers has provided this individual with the opportunity for freedom, independence, and joy. My husband, who is a veteran of the U.S. Army can not even speak of the wonderful expereince of our family being a puppy raiser and the dog we raised going to a veteran without tearing up. And what a wonderful lesson in life this has been for our 12 year old son! Southeastern Guide Dogs makes miracles happen for visually impaired or blind individuals. My family and I are fortunate to be a part of this wonderful organization.

SEGD gave me back my ZEAL for Life with ANGEL,my guidedog. I am one active lady with her. She and I have gone across the USA speaking to other wounded warriors who are Blind to get their butts back out and be the solution and not the problem in solving the needs for us veterans. I was given the best care my 26 days, that I was telling my partner I wanted to bring home the Chef and staff. I learn and grew so much in the short stay. After my first week I cried so much, I didn't realize how much I needed the TLC and Angel until that day. This is the school for anyone needing a Guide or Service Dog.

As a 10 year Board member of Southeastern Guide Dogs (SEGD), I have witnessed the miracle and life changing event each time our guide dog school provides a FREE guide dog and training. Our blind clients arrive at our school for a 26 day training class with their new guide dog that is given to them after they arrive. They are afraid, alone, and dependent. They leave with a new sense of purpose - with a newly felt independence, freedeom & dignity and happiness - if that is now fullfilling for those who serve as volunteers, then NOTHING will. My heart soars like an eagle each time I see our graduation class tell their story - how they lost their eye-sight & how their new guide dog will change their life. I wish more people could witness this miracle - I have no doubt that God smiles when he looks down on our beloved school and also know that when he looks down at graduation, it brings a tear to His eye! Our Paws for Patriots program also elicts the same feelings. The best example is retired US Navy Seal Marcus Luttrell - the Lone Survivor of a 2005 mission in NE Afghanistan. His 4 man crew was surprised by 150 Talaiban and 3 died after bravely holding off the enemy for hours. A Special Operations Chinook helicopter was sent after them & shot down by a Taliban RPG - 18 Navy Seals and Special Operators were killed - the worst loss of life for US Special Operations ever. Marcus Luttrell, severely wounded with an AK-47 bullet in his leg and a broken back, crawled 7 miles on his hands and knees to a Pastun village who protected him. He wrote a book called Lone Survivor and became the #1 seller on the NY TImes Best Seller List. A movie is being filmed in the Spring of 2011. I received a call from the US Special Operations Care Coalition asking us if we could supply a SEGD Therapy Dog for Marcus as he was having trouble sleeping, had aniexty, & other PTSD issues. After doing our due diligence, we supplied him with Rigby, a yellow lab from our school - it has changed his life and he has now dedicated his life to his new Lone Survivor Foundation which will provide a peaceful multi-acre getaway where would soldiers and their families can rest, fish, horse-back ride, etc ......recover from their wounds - both phyical and mental. Yes, Southeastern Guide Dog is making a huge difference in the lives of thousands!

On a warm afternoon, 2008, I entered the front door of an unfamiliar building where I would spend nearly a month in training with my first dog from Southeastern Guide Dogs. Through the years, each of my six other dogs had played an important part in my life, leading me to and from work, helping me walk to stores and parks with my three children, and accompanying me through air ports and train stations. These dogs had helped me navigate street crossings and locate curbs and stairs, find doors, and make my way into banks and restaurants. Even after the children grew up and moved out, I depended on a dog to help me get around. But in March, I was nervous. I knew what to expect from a guide dog, but I had no idea what to expect from Southeastern. What an incredible experience! The trainers really knew their stuff. They handled the dogs with expertise, skill and love. They also worked patiently with each student, giving clear instructions and making themselves available to answer our questions. The rest of the staff were equally as helpful and accommodating. They did their best to make us feel comfortable in our temporary home away from home. I respect the trainers at Southeastern for hours of dedication, teaching dogs over 40 commands. And I am deeply grateful to the puppy raisers, who provide the basic foundation upon which the rest of the training is built. Southeastern Guide Dogs offers an excellent opportunity for blind and visually impaired individuals, like myself, to get the most out of life, with freedom and independence.

We became part of the Southeastern Guide Dog "family' just over two years ago when we volunterred to be puppy raisers. This was a very, very positive experience. We were so impressed with the Southeastern facility, with the staff and with the care given to the puppies that we knew instantly that this was an organization we would be proud to be a part of. We were assigned to a puppy raising group near to our home. Again, we were impressed with the level of dedication of our Area Co-ordinator and the Puppy Trainer. In fact, everyone involved, we found, were willing to assist us when needed. The level of training these puppies received is top notch. The end result, of course, is this wonderful 'gift' of a guide dog and a companion to some worthy individual. Southeaster Guide Dogs, without a doubt, deserves a five star rating.

As a guide dog user myself, I can honestly say that Southeastern Guide Dogs is one of the finist traning facilities in the USA. The entire staff work hard to see to it that not only do the dogs get the best training and treatment afforded but that the students and graduates are their number one concern. The grounds are set up to train for every situation and the students go through a series of different sceniros in order to assure that they can handle anything they come across in the real world working with their guide dog as a team. The school has people there to help even before you start your training to counsel you on what you need to do in order to obtain a guide dog, how to do it, and what is involved. Then once you have graduated they have a team of GAC (Graduate Advisory Council) that is there 24/7/365 to assist with any problems or questions you may have. I would have to say this is the number one school for anyone looking to get a guide dog and proud to say that I am a graduate myself.

I want to commend the puppy raisers who give so tirelessly of their time and effort to help produce these amazing dogs and I want to commend the training staff at Southeastern for their exceptional accomplishments. I have Southeastern to thank for him, for the training I received and for the follow up services I continue to receive. I know the school couldn’t do it without generous donors and I want to thank them as well and point out the value of their support to my ability to conduct an active and meaningful life.

4 stars is a really good score from me. I'm not sure any organization would get 5 stars. I've always thought Southeastern has a great mission and program, but I've been most impressed with the improvements made the last couple of years. There has been a renewed commitment to quality that I have seen in terms of service to the students of the school; health and well being of the dogs; responsiveness to volunters; and, appreciation of donors. I hope Southeastern keeps up its good work.

As a Puppy Raiser for Southeastern I have been impressed with the support of the organization to the volunteers and the impact these sevices have on the blind community.

Over the last four years, I have spent countless hours as a volunteer for this organization in several areas -fundraising, office work, events and raising puppies. I greatly admire the mission they are attempting to accomplish. While revenues dropped and the economy is still not recovered, this organization has spent funds on many unnecessary 'trimmings' (expensive decorative fencing, landscaping, uniforms, etc), reduced the number of clients they serve (from 90 to 70 annually), increased the number of employees (from 52 to over 65), reduced contact with volunteers and donors, new taglines/logo colors (new stationery, vehicle signs, advertising, brochures, etc.), a life size statue in a brick paver 'garden', etc. While the publicly accessed areas of the 'Nursery' has seen many improvements, the other kennels are not air conditioned or even screened, so the dogs live in heat and insects. Many well experienced employees (some with 10+ years there) were dismissed (most without severance) to be replaced with college degreed young hires with NO experience in breeding, handling, training, or caring for dogs or experience with blind individuals for that matter. Approx. 250 puppies are bred and born every year - with only 70 becoming guide dogs. A handful of others become 'Gifted Canines'. Although a 5 year plan is in place, the first priority should have been their 'product' - the dogs, and the clients they serve. Instead, they have focused on 'Image' and being 'premier' and 'world-class', none of which are necessary to GIVE healthy, happy, well-trained guide dogs to blind individuals. There is little to no appreciation or even acknowledgement given to the hundreds of volunteers and no formal program is in place to support them all. As an accountant, I have noticed an oddity. While the Financial Statements (on their website) indicate 2008 Management and General Salaries total only $121,000, the IRS Form 990 indicates the Director of Finance earned over $99,000 and the new CEO earned (annualized) $120,000. Together, their salaries alone total over $210,000, so the numbers are skewed. While it makes the percentage of direct program costs look better, it is not accurate. Additionally, according to a local prominent foundation's current salary surveys of over 100 area non-profits, the CEO and Director of Finance are grossly overpaid for this size charity and their length of service. The vast majority of those serving on the board of directors aren't even Florida residents. Unfortunately, I and more than a few volunteers (some new, some long-time) are turning our attention elsewhere until this non-profit stabilizes.

Southeastern Guide Dogs is committed to transparency and adheres to the highest ethical and professional standards – and invites any volunteer, donor or member of the public who has any questions or concerns to visit us in person, call, and/or review any aspect of our operation, including our dog care and training, student instruction and financial practices. The review contains a substantial number of misleading claims and material misstatements. The review incorrectly states that Southeastern Guide Dogs “revenues dropped.” Thanks to the generosity of our donors and increased outreach, Southeastern Guide Dogs’ revenues for Fiscal Year 2008-2009 have seen a healthy increase over the previous year and will be publicly reported once our auditing firm completes its independent review of our finances. With careful oversight by our Board of Directors, the organization is thoughtfully applying available resources to increasing both the quality and the breadth of services provided to individuals with visual impairments. The review incorrectly states that the organization “has spent funds on many unnecessary ‘trimmings’ (expensive decorative fencing, landscaping, uniforms, etc.)” and later on added “new taglines/logo colors (new stationery, vehicle signs, advertising, brochures, etc.), a life size statue in a brick paver 'garden', etc.” to the list. We are gratified to report that each one of these projects has been funded either by designated funds or specific grant awards, or through the generosity of advertising vendors who have provided their goods and services to us at no charge. That, of course, means that the dollars our donors so generously provide to us through their monthly or annual gifts are applied directly to mission fulfillment, including breeding, whelping, raising, harness training and placing our wonderful dogs with our students with visual impairments. The statement that our organization “reduced the number of clients they serve from 90 to 70 annually” is extremely misleading. Over the past year, we have made significant improvements to both the quality and scope of our services. They include: • A 3 to 1 student to trainer ratio, which enables our staff to provide highly personalized instruction and services to all of our new students, a laudable achievement that should be celebrated rather than criticized. • A new Graduate Services program that provides ongoing, proactive services – including home visits and consultation – to our active graduates. • During the past fiscal year, we provided guide dogs to 70 new students, provided in-home follow up training services to 155 graduates, and provided 846 graduate phone consultations. The review incorrectly states our dogs “live in heat and insects.” All of our kennels are properly ventilated for optimum temperature control. And the constant rotation of fresh air in our kennels minimizes the risk of airborne bacteria that may be harmful to our dogs. We control insects throughout the facilities and grounds through the use of a pest control company that utilizes “green” products that maximize the health and well being of our staff, volunteers and animals. The review incorrectly states that “many well experienced employees (some with 10+ years there) were dismissed (most without severance) to be replaced with college degreed young hires with NO experience in breeding, handling, training, or caring for dogs or experience with blind individuals for that matter.” We are proud to adhere to the highest professional standards in all of our practices, including our hiring and staff development practices. We consider a variety of factors in all of our hiring decisions, including education and experience – but not age. Our staffing patterns reflect both longevity (for example, our Director of Training has worked for us for more than 21 years) as well as exceptional experience with breeding, handling, training and caring for the dogs (for example, our trainers have 178 years of combined dog-training experience) and extensive experience with serving the blind community. The review correctly states that our organization has increased the number of employees from 52 to over 65 but fails to indicate the additional staff includes a full-time campus veterinarian and several veterinary technicians, kennel assistants, and guide dog trainers and mobility instructors – all essential to the fulfillment of our mission. All of us at Southeastern Guide Dogs are genuinely proud of the care and attention we provide to our students and dogs. The review incorrectly states we have “reduced contact with volunteers and donors” and that “there is little to no appreciation or even acknowledgement given to the hundreds of volunteers and no formal program is in place to support them all.” In fact, we have greatly expanded contact with all stakeholders through regular communications that include both direct communications (e.g., through staff outreach) as well as traditional media (e.g., newsletters and annual reports); electronic media (e.g., our website and blogs for puppy raisers, graduates and breeder hosts); and social media such as Facebook and Twitter. We have several formalized programs to support our volunteers, including a new Volunteer Retention and Recognition program and an expanded Puppy Raising Services Department that provides ongoing support and recognition to our 250 puppy raisers. The statement that “approx. 250 puppies are bred and born every year - with only 70 becoming guide dogs and a handful of others becoming 'Gifted Canines'” is misleading. While our breeding to placement ratio is consistent with North American industry standards, our Gifted Canines program places a significant number of dogs that do not meet the specific criteria required for guide dog work into alternative careers such as therapy and law-enforcement careers. During the last fiscal year, we placed 60 dogs into such important careers. The statement that the numbers reported in our Audited Financial Statements and Form 990 are “skewed” are grossly misleading. We are happy to discuss the numbers reported – and made publicly available – with anyone who has bona fide questions regarding them. The claim that ”according to a local prominent foundation's current salary surveys of over 100 area non-profits, the CEO and Director of Finance are grossly overpaid for this size charity and their length of service” is unsubstantiated by the facts. Executive compensation is reviewed each year by a strong and independent board comprised of community leaders with assistance from an outside, independent compensation expert and in-depth compensation studies. Finally, the statement that “the vast majority of those serving on the board of directors aren't even Florida residents” is both incorrect and also highly misleading. As listed on our public website, nine of our 14 board members – 64% - are Florida residents – but since Southeastern Guide Dogs, as implied by our name, serves individuals throughout a 12-state region, it is certainly necessary and appropriate to have the entire Southeast represented on the board.
