Review for Center for Urban Community Services | CUCS, New York, NY, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I gladly contribute to CUCS as they do great work in helping to rebuild the lives of homeless and disadvantaged people in NYC, specializing in people who have multiple barriers to housing. They provided direct services to someone close to me and helped her in finding a place to call home. During the process, despite not being the direct service provider, they stayed interested in her success which is a testament to how much CUCS cares about everyone.

Review for Marriage Equality New York INC, New York, NY, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I have been involved with MENY for over 6 years and I have seen it ebb and flow through its growth process. The spirit of this organization is something that strives for a single issue to pass and is filled with the passion of community members who take on the roles of leaders. The Annual Wedding March, handled completely by volunteers,is a testament to the spirit of the organization. This march is the largest annual demonstration in the United States for marriage equality and it continually grows each year- reaching a new place and new people. Marriage Equality Day is where NYS residents go to Albany to educate elected officials on why marriage matters. They tell their personal stories of how it effects them. They are educated on the rights, benefits, privileges and responsibilities that the word marriage bestows on opposite sex couples, so they can convey this message to their elected officials. Also, they are supported by petitions, signed by our growing membership and broken into constituents of each district, to show elected officials the support we have from their community. These roles, among many others, show how community members, leadership, volunteering, and the spirit of change can infuse an organization and really become a legacy of change for a community, a state, and eventually a country.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

having a bill presented in the NYS Senate & voted on last year, seeing the NYS Assembly vote & pass the marriage equality bill three times, picking up media publications and seeing marriage equality and the statewide wedding march being discussed in NYS.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

look to expand it by gaining necessary funds to hire some support staff as relying solely on volunteer hours makes consistency difficult.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the no-ego environment. They allow anyone, who is willing to put the time and energy into it, to forge the direction of the organization. This method really makes it an organization of involved members that share a single issue of marriage equality.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

very generous in their time and always happy to be there. They usually share a common interest of equality and justice.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Hire Field Organizers across NYS to build stronger chapters, stronger district community organizers, and make more in roads to the community (the organization's essence). They also could use various forms of media to get their message out.

Ways to make it better...

Various community organizations and statewide organizations worked cohesively to bring about change.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

funding for their growth.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?
