Review for Hope Mill Inc, Encino, CA, USA
I found a volunteer opportunity with Hope Mill via Meetup.com and decided to sign up. They are all-volunteer run and depend on mostly private donations for the care packs they distribute to people living on the streets and those in need. The distribution happens via other orgs they partner with, the work Hope Mill does is gathering the supplies and assembling them. I'm wary of finding events like this on the Internet because they are often run by religious organizations. I don't know if it is, but I didn't get any sense of that while I was there.
Everyone was really nice, just seemed like good people who want to do something kind for the community - families with young kids, people like me who came alone, folks who are regulars, pretty diverse. Pearl was super responsive to my questions and very friendly, you can tell this is a labor of love for her. Everything was organized, punctual, efficient, and it felt meaningful to put together 500 packs - exactly what I was hoping for. An afternoon well spent, I hope to come back next month. I also donated about $100 worth of in-kind supplies - I wasn't asked to, but it felt like a nice accompaniment to the volunteer time.
