Review for The Dreaming Zebra Foundation, Portland, OR, USA
My volunteerism at Dreaming Zebra (DZ) started because I am an avid supporter of the adult coloring book movement. While in a particularly stressful time in my life the healing power of colored markers and paper was a welcomed surprise. One day while purchasing coloring books from Lang Graphics, I discovered the “Coloring for a Cause” initiative, where a portion of the sales from their coloring books were being donated to Dreaming Zebra. After speaking at length with Dawne Camera, the Executive Director and Founder of DZ, her commitment and passion to providing children in need with an outlet for creative expression was astounding and more than a little contagious. As a life-long lover of the arts myself, I practically begged for an opportunity to volunteer. My time with DZ has been extremely rewarding no matter what I have helped with; but I must say the day Dawne sent me a photo of children I helped set-up a supplies drive for holding up a “Thank You Dreaming Zebra” sign has been one of the best. I realize we are not donating food or clothing, as lifesaving as those things are, helping underprivileged kids develop self-esteem, social and emotional skills, critical thinking and problem solving skills is pretty awesome too! I thank God every day for my affiliation with this organization; most of the time I think I probably get more from it than the kids do.
