Review for Grist Magazine, Inc., Seattle, WA, USA

Rating: 3 stars

Not impressed with their concern about donors' privacy. I donated to this cause for a couple of years. I always said I wanted my donation (like all my charitable donations) to be confidential -- to not list me as a donor outside the org.
Then I received an email 3 years ago "confirming the spelling of my name to be listed as a donor in their biennial report."
(They were guessing the spelling of my name based on the email address I'd used, which generated a weird last name spelling. If I'd given them my full true name, perhaps they wouldn't have asked me -- just published my name???)
All my charitable donations, I always ask to keep my name private. In the 40 years I've been making charitable donations anonymously, this has only happened a total of 3 times, and the other 2 times were the previous millennium. When I politely pointed out I wanted to be anonymous, the Grist person who contacted me didn't seem all that concerned about the possible disclosure. He said, "these mistakes happen time to time."

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Honor donors' privacy wishes better. Take them seriously.

Review for Oneworld Now, Seattle, WA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Responding to COVID-19 in March '20, even with a new Exec Director who'd only been on the job a few weeks, OneWorld Now made the decision to move all their language and leadership classes online, the faculty set up the online classes thru Zoom, the staff made sure all the students had a way to access and participate in the classes, hunting down a few extra laptops for the students who needed them -- this was all done before the Seattle Public Schools, the community OneWorld Now serves, had even decided to close their in-person classes.
Fantastic program, staff, and students.

Review for FairVote, Takoma Park, MD, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Not only is this a great, bipartisan, national movement to fix aspects of our electoral system, it is truly grassroots. Take a look at how little they spend on fundraising. https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=11898 Best I've ever seen.

Review for Sightline Institute, Seattle, WA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

The very detailed and fair analysis they did in 2016 addressing the pros and cons on CarbonWA's (failed) carbon tax initiative was excellent -- really helpful for sorting the facts from the BS from both sides. Great work.

Review for Mercy Corps, Portland, OR, USA

Rating: 5 stars

They do great work all over the world but what they've been doing in Syria the past 4 - 5 years during the civil war, it's really impressive.

Review for Grameen Foundation USA, Washington, DC, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I first learned of this organization thru their Bankers Without Borders program. I was impressed they have such a well-run, innovative, effective organization that leverages the SKILLS and TALENTS of volunteers to use them effectively. (Volunteering with them also can give you valuable professional experience and help your own career -- How's that for win-win.)
I learned more about the organization, the very innovative work they were doing (this was 5 or 8 years ago) with cell phone technology to empower very poor people in remote places, and what they offer for microfinance organizations. It's a great organization with wonderful results. I'll continue donating money, and if possible, my time as well.

I'm a Volunteer AND Donor. Too bad this combination isn't an option below.
