As a newly appointed board member, I have been truly impressed by the Pacific Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. While PHLBI is best known internationally for its innovative research into mesothelioma, it is equally as innovative in other disease areas.

The organization has outstanding staff who are not only extremely compassionate and professional, they also possess can-do attitudes.

The recent 5K Walk/Hike for Mesothelioma was an outstanding event that exemplifies the organization's commitment more than just research. The event was more than just a fundraiser, it was a gathering of patients, families and supporters who learned from and supported each other.

There were people at the event who are currently suffering from mesothelioma, and there were families and friends there who lost someone to the disease. In fact, I was so inspired by the group that I donated onsite to the PHLBI tissue bank.
