Review for Action in Africa Inc., Aspen, CO, USA
In all my aspirations of working in the non profit world, I could have never imagined that an opportunity like the one granted to me at Action In Africa could have landed in my lap just a year after graduating from my undergraduate education. Sarah (President) gave me the unique chance to test the things that I had studied and the ideas I had about the potential for women in the underdeveloped world by giving me the reigns of Women to Women- the women's empowerment program at AIA. I spent 6 months with 50-odd amazing women aged 20-60 years old and learned more than I could ever imagined was possible.
Aside from that, working with Sarah in the goal of providing the children of the community of Nankuadde (outside of Kampala) with the opportunity of continuing their education through secondary schools (something that many families can't afford) and the sorts of additional educational opportunities that we in the developed world take for granted like having artistic and physical education along with scholarly education.
In attempting to find my first "career job" in the world of development non profits, I was terrified of having to settle for a job with an organization whose mission and actions I couldn't agree with. The way Sarah has taken on the challenge of reshaping and reinventing AIA since its founding in 2008, is incredibly admirable and has made me extremely proud to be linked with AIA for the rest of my life. The organization's growth even since it moved locations in the village was completely unprecedented and as it continues to gain the following of children, mothers, and community members, it deserves to be acknowledged and rewarded as an organization that wholeheartedly pursues its mission in sustainable and effective ways.
