It has really helped young souls acquire education and part of their childhood due to the poverty in the rural areas that wouldn’t be possible without Action in Africa. They’ve done a tremendous job.
This nonprofit is run by some of the most amazing people I have had the pleasure of knowing. The care and time they have put into making this organization run smoothly is impressive. I could only imagine what it takes to accomplish their mission. I joined the board about a year ago and got to see, in more detail, what the admins have done in the past decade and I was completely blown away. They have grown to be so much more than I could ever have guessed, and I am so proud to be involved in whatever way I can. The way Sarah and her team has inspired and empowered the individuals, neighborhoods, and communities in Uganda is spectacular. I am so proud to be on the AIA Board and can not wait to see what they do in the coming years.
My experience with Action in Africa has always been incredible! I admire this nonprofit, it’s mission, and it’s leadership team. I think AIA does an excellent job with communicating its mission and updates via marketing and other channels. I’m a proud supporter of AIA.
Action in Africa strives to Educate, Inspire, and Empower people in Uganda by focusing on education and community development. The goal is to provide sustained education, allowing individuals to reach their untapped potential and incite economic growth by becoming the next leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs in their country. In order to revolutionize their approach, they have developed three bold models that facilitate the achievement of their objectives: Scholarship not Sponsorship, Zero Handouts, and Community Generated Offerings.
After recognizing the lack of safe after school activities for kids in the village and the requests of parents to have adult education lessons, they also decided to open a community center. In 2014 they officially opened “The Center,” a community facility that serves as a place for people in Nakuwadde to Be, Belong, and Become. The Center offers daily after school, creativity-based programming for kids in the village as well as weekly programs for adults.
Because of these approaches, Action in Africa has made a life long impact on this community and continues to be the model for success for these types of programs. It's truly the best of its kind.
Such an incredible organization that has transformed the Nakuwadde community. A safe haven for community members to feel at home and learn outside the box. The next generation of students will have a more well-rounded education and outlook on life because of people like Sarah and the AIA staff! I loved being there and cannot wait to go again!

I have been involved with Action in Africa since I was in high school and it has been the most rewarding experience of my life. I’ve been to Uganda twice to see first hand the work that is being done and it is nothing short of awe inspiring. So much stands out about the work being done at “The Center” but what stood out most to me is the appreciation each and every kid has for their education. Every child comes The Center everyday after school eager to use the library, take additional classes, and work on their arts and crafts. Action in Africa provides an outlet and opportunity for kids to grow and it’s amazing to see the way each kid cherishes that opportunity.
This wonderful non profit was started by two young girls at Aspen High School in early 2000 after a trip to Uganda. The work they started and continue to do providing programs for families in what was an underserved community is remarkable. A very worthy organization. I personally know the program founder who works tirelessly and takes very little salary in return.
The best non profit organization I know. Love the updates they send every month!! And love how many children and families they help every year!!
AIA is an incredible organization that I feel privileged to have been and continue to be a part of in many ways. As a former employee, a Center Visitor, and a current donor I truly believe in the work AIA is accomplishing everyday. AIA is committed to the Nakuwadde community in so many ways - you can see it from the majority Ugandan staff, the cross generational participation at the center, the repeated stories of youth who started in the primary partnership program and are now in the University Program, and more! It’s hard to do good, genuine, impactful development work, but AIA manages to continue to succeed in fostering genuine impactful relationships within the community and fostering wholistic development.
The enthusiasm of so many first rate young St.Louis ladies speaks volumes for AIA.THE pictures of the facility speak volumes.IT warms my heart to see Shaki with his walking aides.AIA is a blessing bestowed from above,in that I have no doubt. I have very ,seriously, little money but AIA was my 20$ charity of choice last Christmas.
AiA has done to provide for those in need in Uganda. They go above and beyond to ensure everyone’s interest are met and Sarah and her team are dedicated!
Action in Africa is an incredible organization that is extremely hands-on. The President of the organization, Sarah, lived in Uganda for almost 4 years and currently is a frequent visitor of the center in Uganda. The employees and volunteers work tirelessly every day to create a better world for the people of Nakuwadde.
Action in Africa is an exceptional organization. Education is such an important cause to fight for and AIA is doing an amazing job putting children and their education first. These children can do anything they put their minds to and AIA supports that fully.
Action in Africa is an exceptional organization that is truly making a difference for the community members of Nakuwadde, Uganda. Its focus on ground-up support through community-focused services and education has evolved into a revolutionary concept. Action in Africa’s impact on Uganda is tangible and will continue to grow into an even more valuable and long-lasting resource to develop and support community members so they can achieve their fullest potential.
Action In Africa is such an amazing organization creating significant and lasting impact in the community of Nakuadde outside of Kampala, Uganda. Their programs truly impact every level of the community and most significantly, the youth. I have been engaged with this organization for 8 or so years and I have seen it grow sustainably to reflect of the needs of the community they serve.
Action in Africa was a life changing experience for me. It altered the trajectory of my life to focus on international work.
The kids that AIA works with are amazing and they appreciate the organization to a level that is hard to articulate. The community center gives the kids a place to collaborate and work towards goals. It not only focuses on the kids but the entire families in the community, which I find incredibly important. AIA also sees itself as flexible and solves problems in the community as they are identified and brought to their attention.
Action in Africa is an incredible organization and is creating meaningful change within communities. They educate and empower people in Uganda through their programming and community development initiatives. I have been a long time supporter of the AIA mission and have seen the positive impact this organization has had on both children and adults in Uganda.
I first heard about Action in Africa in the Fall of 2007 from my daughter Mimi Rogers. Mimi was 14 years old and a Freshman at Aspen High School. She came home from school one day and told me about a club she joined to help raise money and awareness for causes in Africa. She was very excited and enthused about it!
It continues to be a very easy decision to support Action in Africa. My daughter's commitment to work for Action in Africa grew quickly and has remained consistent to this day. As a Sophomore, Mimi became President of the Club at Aspen High School and was very involved with the growth of Action in Africa, assisting with the procurement of its 501(c)3 non-profit status when she was a Junior in high school. She went to Uganda for the first time in 2008, returned every year while in high school, and has gone a total of 7 times. For more than 10 years, our family has supported Mimi with her endeavors and we also became involved ourselves. While Mimi was in high school, I served as a parent moderator for the Action in Africa club. I helped plan the annual student service trips to Uganda and went as a chaperone. Our son Christopher became involved with Action in Africa while a student at Chapman University. He also went on a service trip with AinA and spent 4 months living, working and studying in Uganda. I now serve as a member of the Board of Directors and help plan 2 annual fundraisers for Action in Africa. Having been so closely involved with the organization and having been to Uganda to see the vast accomplishments that have occurred, makes me feel honored to be a part of it. I am very proud of Sarah, Maggie, Mike, Mimi and all of the other young people who have put so much time and effort into this incredible cause for good.
I have watched from afar this nonprofit do amazing things for years. I dream of one day being able to see the work on-the-ground firsthand!
I have been apart of Action in Africa for the past four years and have never failed to be impressed and inspired by all of the amazing work they do. Not only is Action in Africa changing the lives of students in Uganda but they have changed many lives of student in the US, like myself, as well. My time spent on the ground in Uganda has been nothing less than perfect. Each year Action in Africa is making a profound impact on many lives. Ive seen the changes this organization has made already and am beyond thankful and excited to have the ability to continue to work for and with Action in Africa!
I joined the Action in Africa high school club three years ago and ever since I have been so excited and involved with everything they do. I have traveled to The Center in Uganda twice since being in the club and each day I spent there I was blown away. The amount of support Action in Africa provides for the small village where The Center is located is amazing, from counseling with the women around the village to after school programs and porridge for the kids or free english lessons Action in Africa has made a huge impact in Uganda. The continuous work from the staff and volunteers in incredible. Action in Africa provides amazing opportunities for the village each and every day. Visiting The Center for the first time in 2015 was shocking, I was shocked and blown away by the effect AIA had on the community even if it was as little as doing a village clean up. Going back to Uganda in 2016 was even more incredible. I saw first hand the progress of these peoples lives. I could see that what AIA does was actually changing their lives for the better and their support was loved and needed by the community. I've witnessed Action in Africa has doing amazing things in one year and there is only room for growth with this organization.
I cannot begin to describe the impact that Action in Africa has in Uganda, but also on the people who are involved with the organization. Everyone who walks through the front gates at “The Center” is forever changed. For the people of Nakwadde, Action in Africa provides a space that encourages creativity, education, and community. I have seen first hand how Action in Africa inspires the people they work with to chase their dreams, while also providing programs that help make those dreams a reality.
This organization is able to do what they do so well because of the incredible team of driven, hardworking individuals who run Action in Africa. The entire team is doing what they do simply because they love the people of Nakwadde. They are truely apart of the Nakwadde community and consider the Ugandans that they work with to be family. This kind of motivation is what has helped Action in Africa succeed and is what will help them continue to grow in the future. I am so excited to see what is in store for this amazing organization. Only great things ahead!!
Action in Africa is a truly incredible organization with a bright future ahead. I started with Action in Africa in eighth grade when it was a small high school club and its main source of income was the occasional bake sale. Since then, I have seen it grow into a globally recognized organization with the stats to back it. The impact that AIA has had on the Nakuwadde community is visible and inspiring. I look forward to watching it grow. Much love.
Action in Africa has a very dedicated group of people both managing and volunteering their time. The support and comfort they give to so many families is a true blessing.
Action in Africa is a wonderful non-profit started by the most amazing, selfless, kind, and generous person I have ever met. I have had the privilege to know Sarah and her family for the last 25 years and I am deeply moved by her devotion to such a great organization. Very proud to call her my friend! You are an inspiration!
I’ve watched Action in Africa grow from a small idea in our high school to an incredible reality! The number of lives touched by this amazing nonprofit is something people dream of. It is on my bucket list to volunteer in Uganda and experience the Love first hand.
I am consistently impressed with Action in Africa's accomplishments. This organization has made an incredible impact in the Kampala area and has done so on a shoestring budget. The 2017 numbers for bowls of porridge and gallons of water served, secondary and primary school student fees reduced or eliminated, and health services provided were staggering. The Center in Kampala now sees hundreds of people through its doors each week. Providing free after-school programs and classes for adults and children for a significant portion of the community.
I am excited to see this organization grow and its impact spread. We could use an Action in Africa in every city! Keep up the amazing work!
Action in Africa has changed my son’s life. He has not only been a member of the club but saved his money and traveled to Uganda to have a hands on experience and make a difference with all these amazing children he served! And the Moms! Thank you AIA for making such a difference!!!
I have had the opportunity to volunteer with Action in Africa in 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2016. The organization has blossomed since I first visited in 2011. The organization has empowered the community in a unique way, and the way that the students have grown with the organization is remarkable. I've always valued the way Action in Africa handles their organization. Nothing is just free, and as a result it allows the community to come together and work toward common goals. The staff at Action in Africa is passionate about what they do. With as many people as the organization constantly has, it's incredible that the staff continually works to meet their needs. Spending time with the children and the students there has constantly impacted me, and Action in Africa has provided me a way to serve and love on them. In short Action in Africa is incredible, and I have no doubt that I'll volunteer with them again in the future.
I have been involved with Action in Africa for nearly 7 years, after first hearing about it my freshman year of college and becoming actively involved. I have been fortunate enough to travel to Uganda three times to see the amazing work AIA does firsthand. It has been absolutely incredible to see the growth over these past few years at The Center. Everything AIA does is intentional and with the input of the residences of Nakuwadde. Educational scholarships. After school programing—art, dance, sports etc. Adult programming—English lessons, women empowerment etc. AIA has a zero-tolerance policy for dependency, which is a central part of program planning. Additionally, AIA is transparent in how they work and how donations are used. AIA is small nonprofit making a big impact. It has unfortunately been a couple years since my last trip to Uganda and I am aching to get back to this community of amazing people.
I have had the opportunity to travel to Uganda and volunteer with Action in Africa twice over the past two years. Each time, I was completely blown away with how much this organization can accomplish with the resources that they have. It is a testament to the people running Action in Africa that they can create such an amazing sense community. During my second visit (which was three months long) I got to know the personalities that drive this organization. It really is the individuals and their motivations to embrace the Nakuwadde community that pushes this organization above and beyond.
Action in Africa takes an honest approach with its surrounding community. It does not simply take action that looks impressive, or produces impressive numbers. It takes time to have a real meaningful discussion about the individual problems in the community, and how it can effectively address them. I can say from experience that this approach has had a profound impact on the Nakuwadde community and everyone who comes to the center has an experience that is personalized for them.
This organization does amazing work!
I have worked with Action in Africa for over 10 years and can honestly say that the experience keeps getting better and better. This organization tackles education and community development holistically, providing primary, secondary, and even university scholarships to send kids to school, while offering supplemental educational programming at a community center that has quickly become the center of Nakuwadde, the village where the group is based. These classes at the community center include arts and crafts, music and dance, story telling/creative writing, and debate, and they are designed to help the students think both creatively and critically. Via its scholarship program and community center programming, AIA has impacted the lives of thousands of students!
I have traveled to Nakuwadde to work with Action in Africa 5 times, and I can attest to the amazing work being done on the ground there. This group is a living testament to the fact that successful nonprofits are built though experience! Really excited about what the future holds for Action in Africa.
Action in Africa is a remarkable non-profit that educates, empowers, and inspires both Ugandans and those lucky enough to work or volunteer with the organization. It started with myself and several of my high school students, who have now taken control of the NPO. We have learned along the way and have truly learned to listen and collaborate with the African community we are trying to support. We are now seeing several of our first students we helped become young adults who contribute and work not only within AIA, but also their community at large. All but one of our employees are local Ugandans. AIA has also opened its doors to numerous volunteer groups who have come and really been challenged to rethink their own lives. Overall this is a dream come true for me as the torch continues to get passed along. Huge kudos to Sarah who has dedicated much of her life to the success of this wonderful organization.
