My family and I lived on an animal sanctuary from the time I was 6 until my adulthood. My parents managed the sanctuary for retired racehorses, abandoned and abused dogs, cats, and even a few parrots. In my adulthood, I have worked 16 years as a veterinary technician and currently own a pet sitting business. I have, over my lifetime, seen parrots in some of the best and unfortunately, some of the worst conditions. I had the pleasure of meeting Audrey and her beautiful birds recently. She was very happy to welcome me in to see her place and I have to say, I was immediately impressed. She has an entire building dedicated to housing her birds, and each of them receives time outdoors in a shaded, open air, parrot re-enforced enclosure. She knows who gets along with whom so they are allowed to socialize in small groups. Additionally, every parrot has their own personal space, although a few prefer to share with their partners, in clean roomy cages where they sleep for the night. The "bird building" is amazingly clean, not an easy feat with big birds! She makes their meals by hand twice a day. They get a colorful array of fresh fruits and vegetables, in addition to a complete parrot preparation diet. There are enrichment toys EVERYWHERE to keep them entertained. All of her birds look to be in excellent health, bright-eyed, engaged, and happy (Even Oscar, who was being quite judgemental of me being in his space and talking with his mom!) She tells of each birds story and personality as if she was doting on her own children. Some of their stories are heartbreaking, but here, these birds are finally able to live large! The parrots come from backgrounds that have taught them not to trust people, but when Audrey walks in the room, you can tell they all trust her beyond measure. That's something that can only be accomplished with time, quality care, dedication, and a very loving heart. Her work has paid off. I am so glad to meet someone so dedicated to help animals where humans often fail them. Audrey is the best crazy bird lady I have met and deserves all the support she can get to keep her dream, and her beautiful birds, alive and well!
