I recently joined this outstanding organization as a volunteer but I formerly was familiar with Assistance League of the Eastside as a working journalist. I interviewed families served by programs such as Operation School Bell, as well as school counselors and school nurses who spoke of the tremendously positive impact on students' self-esteem. Children served by Operation School Bell are dealing with a wide variety of difficult issues. Some are homeless, others are in foster care or have parents who are unemployed or the working poor. To be able to choose new clothes for school, through Assistance League of the Eastside's Operation School Bell, is something that gives these kids hope and a way to fit in at school when they already have so many challenges in their young lives. Assistance League of the Eastside's other wonderful philanthropic programs assist assault survivors, the homeless and women in transitional housing.
