Each year the Assistance League of the Eastside produces an amazing event called Operation School Bell. It is an opportunity for students to spend an evening with their families and shop for brand new school clothes at a local Fred Meyer. Our students not only look forward to the event but many of our families really count on the extra support that it provides. Our students love the event, are able to purchase many items they really need, and are given an opportunity that would not exist otherwise. Thank you!

The Assistance League of the Eastside (ALE) has been a compassionate and ardent supporter of The Sophia Way’s mission and programs. Since 2012, the Help for Homeless Committee ladies have repeatedly stepped forward from donating items that women need to providing delicious meals for community brunches. The “welcome baskets” they put together are particularly meaningful. The baskets are filled with more than 30 essential supplies (including a shower caddy with toiletries, towels, robe, slippers, sheets, fleece throw) and are gifted to each woman on the first day she comes for a six-month stay at The Sophia Way's Extended-Stay Shelter. ALE also plays a vital role in raising awareness about the increasing number of people experiencing homelessness in our community. The Sophia Way is incredibly grateful and appreciative of all they do and give.

I have been a member of Assistance League of the Eastside for 5 years and I am continually in awe of the dedication and commitment of our members to our philanthropic programs. As an all-volunteer organization, members do all the heavy lifting from planning and executing large fundraising events to purchasing, assembling and delivering critical supplies to those in our communities experiencing homelessness, financial insecurity, assault, or domestic abuse. I have served on a number of nonprofit boards and it is amazing how much time our members dedicate to ensure that our goals are achieved.

I am proud to be a 12 year member of this all volunteer organization. We are able to address needs through our programs: Operation School Bell®, Assault Survivor Kits®, Help 4 Homeless, and Starting Over Support. During this time of social distancing / Covid, flexibility was needed in raising funds and delivering help. Bravo for working on both !

It may seem as if the Eastside community is affluent, but the need continues to be great and is increasing. As both a (retired) teacher and volunteer, I have seen students' self-esteem and academic success boosted from wearing new clothes they were able to select at shopping events through Assistance League of the Eastside's signature program, Operation School Bell®. From helping dispense hope to students, women experiencing homelessness, those fleeing domestic violence, and survivors of abuse, this all volunteer organization is really creating a difference in our community.

I loved working on Operation School Bell & seeing the smiles on family faces & getting feedback from teachers & school counselors about how proud kids were with new clothes. I was proud that ALE was able to make changes to better serve families during the pandemic. As a volunteer grant writer for ALE I am proud to sharing our financial data along with program statistics with potential funders knowing that are numbers are accurate & show frugal programs that work hard to give all we receive back to community.

I knew about the Assistance League because my Mom was a member in Calif. for 34 years & I heard about what her chapter was doing there. So when my life opened up & I had room to help others Assistance League of the Eastside (ALE) felt like the perfect place to go & after 2 months I already know I've made the right decision. This group is so welcoming & really takes the time & energy to training the new people on how & why this organization works! After the orientation I helped stuff dental bags for Operation School Bell (OSB), a well organized process that gave me time to get to know some of the new & long term members. Then I helped at OSB & what a surprising, rewarding adventure. I worked 3 nights & it was so fun to watch the kids excitement on getting new clothes for school & to hear the parents gratitude for the support they felt.
I have worked with other volunteer organization in my career, but I must say ALE is definitely one of the best. Well organized:
* to make every donation they receive count,
* to insure every volunteer is informed & feels appreciated
* to fill the needs of the communities they service
* & to Keep donors involved & informed of what they are contributing to.

Can you imagine not having your own warm winter coat? Wearing a sweatshirt that belonged to your Dad to school, as a fourth grader, because you’re cold and outgrew your own?

This is the reality that faced many of my students as they approach the winter season.

Each year, Assistance League of the Eastside through their program, Operation School Bell, provides over 3,000 children in three local school districts with a gift card to Fred Meyer to purchase the clothing they most need.

As a retired Principal in the Lake Washington School District, I got to see first hand the incredible impact Operation School Bell had on my students. My students would run up to me to show me their new coat or winter boots. They proudly showed me their new mittens and hats.

One young student whispered to me that she slept in her coat and that she never wanted to take it off as it was so warm.

This is the life changing impact that the Assistance League of the Eastside made in the lives of my “kids.”

As a retired teacher and principal in the Lake Washington School District, I have seen first hand the great impact that Operation School Bell had on my students in providing new clothing to wear to school. The elementary students would excitedly show me their new shoes and clothes. The smiles on their faces warmed my heart.

Recently, I joined the Assistance League of the Eastside and was able to be a part of assisting parents and their children in picking out new clothing and shoes for school. This program came full circle for me. The impact of Operation School Bell is extraordinary!

From the excited faces of the children choosing new clothing and the appreciation from their parents, to the following day where children would run up to me and say, “Look at my new shoes!” THIS PROGRAM CHANGES LIVES!

From helping women experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, or the violence of assault to building children's self esteem through providing new clothes, the Assistance League of the Eastside provides essential needs in our very own community.

With the challenges that have been presented by CoVid 19, our members have pivoted seamlessly to serve the most vulnerable in our community in new, different, and safe ways! Through our philanthropic programs we continue to provide comfort and hope to local women, children, and families during a time when the need is greater than ever.

They provide new school clothes for students in need. They also provide services for the homeless and those starting over.
The majority of funds raised are funneled back into the community.

Assistance League of the Eastside is an amazing group of women who are dedicated to improving the lives of women and children in the Eastside area of Seattle. They work tirelessly to raise funds to give school aged children the opportunity to purchase brand news clothes/shoes at the beginning of each year, as well as supporting women in homeless shelters and those who have been the victims of sexual assault/physical assault. I have been a member of the Assistance League of the Eastside for four years. In that time I have held several roles exposing me to all aspects of the organization's work. I was initially drawn to the organization when I happened upon an Operation School Bell event at my local Fred Meyer, and wondered what was going on. I talked to one of the volunteers working that night and learned what Assistance League does for families in our community, and joined as a member several months later. I have been a committee chairperson and seen the hard work of our volunteers up close. It impresses me how an all-volunteer organization continues to evolve to meet the needs of our community on issues such as poverty, domestic violence and sexual assault.
I have shopped for supplies to go into "Welcome Baskets" for domestic violence survivors starting over in women's shelters. I have loaded up my SUV with hundreds of pieces of clothing destined to be assembled into Assault Survivor Kits to be handed out in hospital emergency rooms for sexual assault survivors. I have been able to help school children shop for necessary clothing that they wouldn't otherwise be able to afford without our help. I have made deliveries of baskets and kits all over the state. In addition to the work that has been quantifiable, I have also experienced personal growth and a gained a new set of skills that will carry forward into all future work that I do.
Assistance League of the Eastside is a great non-profit to volunteer with. I have met some amazing women that feel the way that I do; that our organization is worthy of our considerable energy, our time and our financial resources, and that together we can make a difference.

I am a longtime donor of Assistance League of the Eastside. I have found them to be excellent stewards of the money they receive, consistently returning over 80% to provide program services. This year they altered the delivery of their services to protect both volunteers and recipients and are working hard to replace the fundraising event that was canceled in April. I highly recommend them.

I have been a member of Assistance League of the Eastside for over 15 years and have been proud to watch this entirely volunteer organization grow. I had been an active volunteer in my children's schools and in the local food bank, but when I joined the ranks of Assistance League I was thrilled to see my impact on my community broadened and magnified. Assistance League is a highly effective fundraising organization that distributes those funds directly, through its own programs in support of local women and children. The most gratifying part of membership is to meet a recipient and know that I was part of something that made a real difference in their life. I have the privilege of seeing children's faces light up when they have the opportunity to select brand new school clothes and shoes for the very first time. It is so much better than just writing a check to a charity and hoping the money is used wisely. I feel like I'm the one receiving a precious gift.

I am a member for the last 11 years. I love that this oranization supports the local community and with all volunteers. Almost all the money raised by us goes into our programs which vary from providing new school clothing to children in need, helping homeless women get back on their feet, providing starting over Support items of need to domestic violence families getting a new place to live, and helping clothe women and men who have been victimized by rape and need to leave their clothing for evidence at hospital they are getting treatment from. Helping all of these various programs makes me feel great to help our local community and others to get back on their feet and help their self esteem.

Assistance League of the Eastside is intentional, thoughtful, and caring. Many times the women that move into Acres feel overlooked, unloved, and unsafe. The welcome baskets that Assistance League provides helps shows the women that they are seen, loved, and safe. The members are constantly asking for input to provide support in the most effective and useful ways. Whenever they host a birthday party, give encouraging cards, or make welcome baskets they do it well. One new resident started to cry when she opened up her welcome basket “all this is all for me?”. Thank you Assistance League!

We at Equinix have worked with ALE for 2 years now. This is such an amazing experience and a great way for our company to give back to our local community. We work with ALE on several different events. Prepping food for the "New Bethlehem Project", packing dental kits for school age kids in need, donating our hotel shampoos and Soaps, and helping out with "Operation School Bell". The Staff at ALE are amazing and provide clear communication on what our company needs to do. The staff make Volunteering easy. They are very personable and their passion for their work shows. We as a Company love collaborating with the ALE and will continue to participle in their outreach events in the years to come.

Thanks to the efforts of Assistance League of the Eastside, 100 of my high school students are able to get new, appropriate clothes to wear to school. And that is just my school - they help all schools in the Lake Washington School District along with others. Feeling that you do not fit in can be a barrier to coming to school. These new clothes help homeless and economically disadvantaged youth feel they can fit in and come to school with their heads held high. Education is vital to breaking the poverty cycle, and ALE is a huge partner in this effort.

This organization has been helping our students/families a lot. Our school received about 90 spots each fall that can provide low income students to shop new outfits. This event enhance the confidence of the students who come from financially challenged families that they can also wear "fashionable" clothes among peers.
C is a homeless boy who lives in the car and shelter for months. The family finally settled in our school attendance area. The child has only couple sets of summer clothes and he is suffering with the cold and rainy season. Joined the Operation School Bell event, the boy got several sets of winter clothes plus a jacket. The family is very thankful for the help.
B is a student who was diagnosed with a rare bone disease that she suddenly lost her ability to walk. Participated in the spring OSB, this child was able to get some larger size sweatpants that she felt comfortable when using the wheelchair.
Thanks to the organization and the unconditional love to our children. You have touched many young lives.
Thanks.

I am a school nurse at an elementary school with 600 students. We have about 35% free and reduced lunch rate. We were able to send 72 students to the Operation School Bell and our students were able to shop for $7200 worth of school clothes. My students come back the next morning so excited and proud of their new clothes, shoes, jackets etc. A few of them received scarfs for "free" - they were so excited - I believe those were donated by an Assistance League volunteer. SO AMAZING! One student said that he got his first "Nike" sweatshirt EVER and he had been wanting one for SOOO long. All of the children and their families are very appreciative of the shopping experience. THANK YOU OSB volunteers - you guys rock!!!

Assistance League of the Eastside has a program called Operation School Bell and it is HIGHLY organized, runs smoothly, and has great personal relations with those who use it. Most importantly, it provides resources to hundreds of kids on the Eastside who have financial hardship and can't afford new school clothes. Operation School Bell provides $150 for shopping at Fred Meyer for new school clothes so students can feel confident to attend school. I have a family whose had a tremendous hardship and trauma, they were forced into homelessness and one child only had one shirt and one pair of shorts to wear, every day. He was embarrassed to attend school, always wearing the same outfit. With the help of Operation School Bell, he was provided a means to shop and pick out clothing he liked to feel good about wearing to school. I found some clothing at my home and I offered it to this boy. He turned it down because it wasn't "his style" (and it wasn't) and some of the clothing did not fit. But with Operation School Bell, he was able to get clothing in his style and size that he wanted to wear to school. The program is managed well and makes it easy for school counselors to use the service to help provide a school shopping experience for kids. They support so many families at our school, which really helps our school culture and gives kids the confidence they need to attend school, feeling good about themselves.

I attended a local meeting recently and met an individual who has been supported twice by Assistance League of the Eastside. Additionally, I have known a family for almost 17 years and beginning last year her daughters who are students at an Eastside elementary school have received back to school clothing as participants in the Operation School Bell Program. In both of these cases, the individual and the mother of the students were absolutely excited and thankful for the support that this organization has given them. It makes it worth all of the time the volunteers spend with fundraising and volunteering within our eastside community.

Assistance League of the Eastside has been a long-time partner with our school district. We have students in need of clothing to ensure they can start their new school year with confidence and enthusiasm. Equally important, when our students are able to shop with their parent this provides time for them together to shop and collaborate on what clothing they need. Assistance League of the Eastside is alway great explaining to our parents in different languages how to stretch their spending amount that is given. I even saw a 5th grader and middle school students doing math with their parents to see if they had gone over or had some more money to spend. When crises or emergencies should occur they always collaborate with us to see if they can help. We truly appreciate their support and collaboration to help our students succeed academically and social/emotionally! We are truly grateful!

In May we shopped for back packs and then stuffed them full with a plethora of useful items (sunglasses and cases, water bottle, deodorant, ear plugs, wet wipes, hand lotion, lip balm, sun screen, energy bars, battery operated fans, and more). We took them to the shelter and set them up on each lady's bed so they would see them when the facility reopened for the evening. They were delighted with these gifts just in time for summer weather. These women have experienced homelessness and are working their way back to a stable life. We at Assistance League are very happy to be able to support them in their efforts.

These generous and hard working women team up together to accomplish big things in our local community. From providing Assault Survivor Kits to survivors at the hospital when they are vulnerable and in the greatest need, to giving kids the opportunity to choose new clothes for the school year so they can feel warm, confident and ready to learn when their parents can't provide, to supplying welcome baskets of basic necessities when women experiencing homelessness enter a shelter, this group is making a big difference in people's lives.

Last night I worked at our Operation School Bell. One first time participant was quite stunned that the clothes his child would be receiving were free to him. He didn’t speak English but his son, our client translated for him. It took three different explanations from me to convince him it was true. He was so grateful. This was one child of the 162 we clothed last night alone. Our target this year is 3000.

To whom it may concern,
I am writing on behalf of the Operation School Bell Program and all that it has done for the students who attend Clara Barton Elementary. Our school serves many families who have fallen on hard times and therefore have little resources to provide for their children. Operation School Bell has provided 65 students with the opportunity to not only receive new clothes-but to pick them out and shop for themselves, a detail that makes all the difference!
As a School Counselor starting out at a brand-new school, I was so grateful to offer OSB to our students. The day after the event takes place is one of my favorite days! I can’t tell you how many proud kids wait at my door, eager to show off their new light up shoes or the first warm coat they’ve ever had. In the past, our staff would use personal funds to purchase basic need items for students who were in desperate need. Operation School Bell is a blessing to all of us, and I cannot imagine Clara Barton without it.
Thank you for the love and generosity you show our community.

Sincerely,
Blair Lovatt

I have had the privilege of working alongside the Assistance League of the Eastside staff for the last eight years during their annual Operation School Bell event. Operation School Bell provides qualifying students, ranging from elementary thru high school, the opportunity to shop for school clothing and shoes. These are students who may otherwise not get to participate in “back to school shopping”, as the majority of children, do due to financial hardship. This year the Assistance League served 3,295 students from 75 schools in 3 school districts at 19 shopping events at 3 local Fred Meyer stores! So unbelievable!!! In doing so, they worked all year long to raise and spent nearly $400,000 for our kids. Each and every year they continue to make changes to their systems and protocols to improve and make things as quick, easy, and enjoyable for our families as possible. They have even created incredible software that has facilitated a check-in/follow-up process that is a well-oiled machine. As a school district employee, I have had the privilege of seeing the impact their investment makes in the lives of each and every student that gets to participate. Most of us remember the excitement we would have on the eve of the first day of school, taking great care to pick out our favorite outfit. What a joy it has been to watch our students come to school the day after the event, displaying the same sense of pride in having chosen their favorite clothes to wear. It’s not just clothes and shoes, however, that the Assistance League has gifted our students with. They have provided our students with choices and experiences that they would not have had, and in doing so gave them the chance to be just like their peers. A sense of belonging is such a critical thing at any age, but especially as each ones moves through their school years. I will always be so grateful to the Assistance League of the Eastside and I know our families are as well. If anyone is looking to invest in a non-profit having a local and direct impact, the Assistance League of the Eastside would be an excellent choice.

The Assistance League of the Eastside is a great organization that provides sweat sets and personal care supplies for victims of sexual assault that come through our Emergency Department for a forensic exam. Often these victims have their clothing taken as evidence and have nothing to leave in except hospital gowns. With the help of the clothing donations from the Assistance League of the Eastside group, these victims are given dignity as they are discharged from the hospital to move forward in their lives after their trauma.

The Assistance League of the Eastside provide comfort and compassion to the victims that come to our hospital seeking care and justice after suffering the most horrific personal violation imaginable.
With their donation of new sweatshirt and pant sets along with personal toiletry care items, victims of sexual assault leave the hospital after their forensic exam with new clothes to wear. This small gesture goes a long way as many clothing items are taken as evidence in a case against the person who assaulted these victims.
The emergency department at our small, rural hospital is so grateful to this non-profit group for providing their much appreciated donations. We see the value of their service passed along to the patients we serve who come to us as victims of assault and leave with new, clean clothes and personal items and therefore are on the path to becoming survivors.
Thank you Assistance League of the Eastside! Your generosity allows our nurses to provide better care to the victims of sexual assault who come through our doors.

From one of the nurses at Evergreen Health Medical Center: Thanks again for all you do. I had a case last night with a very short gal who came in with some worn out second hand clothes. A older teen but not cognitively developed passed about 8. I had to take all her clothes and it was very nice to be able to give her cute little undies and hooded sweats to go home in after she cleaned herself up. She had been very cold and it was the perfect thing for her.

I am really impressed by the commitment and enthusiasm of the volunteers and the good work they are doing. The needy families were treated with respect and love. It is great that needy children are able to buy the clothes of their own choice.

You help our patients feel whole again. Sometimes they come in without any clothing or we give their clothes to police during our sexual assault exam as evidence in their case. It is very comforting to be able to give them some cozy new clothes and a nice toiletry kit to get cleaned up. What a wonderful service you provide, thank you!

When I am able to give clothes and toiletries to patients who have been through the trauma of a sexual assault, it really makes the patient feel so much better. Many times patients are asked give up their clothes as evidence, but have nothing to wear home. The Assistance League of the Eastside ensures every patient can have clothes to leave in. Thanks so much!!!

Our Medical facility has been working with the Assistance League of the Eastside for many years now. They provide new, clean clothing as well as toiletries to us. When an assault survivor comes into our facility for treatment, we then, are able to make these patients feel more comfortable by offering them a clean change of clothes and personal items to put them more at ease. Thank you for providing this invaluable service to us and our patients!

As a result of the generosity of Assistance League of the Eastside, over 1,000 students had the opportunity to pick out new school clothes at the shopping event at our local Fred Meyer. Many of our families depend on this event to clothe their growing children. As the need in our district has grown, Assistance League of the Eastside has graciously expanded their program to help more families, including high school students and unaccompanied minors. Over the years they have streamlined the application process and it is a pleasure to collaborate with them. The shopping nights are always a joyous experience. This program creates beautiful smiles on so many faces. Students arrive a school the next day, feeling confident and proud in their new outfits. We consider Assistance League of the Eastside a valued partner in supporting our struggling families.

My first experience with this organization was volunteering to help at Operation School Bell, where students are given funds to shop for school clothes. It touched so many lives, I was amazed. I saw so many smiles on kids' and parents' faces and heard "thank you" so often that I could tell I was making a difference. Five years later I am very involved in Assistance League of the Eastside from raising funds to administrative duties, but my favorite thing to do is volunteer at Operation School Bell. A great organization making a difference in people's lives!

Assistant League of the Eastside gives so much back to our local community helping homeless families, victims of domestic violence and helping clothe children in need. I have seen the changes in students lives that have been served with operation school bell and the confidence that comes from being able to shop for their owns clothes for school. The smiles on the family's faces as they leave the store after a successful shopping experience makes me tear up.

This group of women opens their hearts to women and children in need in many ways. They clothe children through Operation School Bell, 3800 this year! I have had opportunities to work in all phases of OSB, learning new skills and sharing my life experiences. We are all volunteers, so donations go directly to our clients.

I had the pleasure of volunteering my time for a shift at an event organized by ALE...specifically, Operation School Bell. This program provides clothing assistance to needy children of all ages via paid-for shopping events at local Fred Meyer stores. I met the most dedicated, enthusiastic bunch of organizers and volunteers from ALE during this event, which proceeded like clockwork from start to finish. Most priceless, however was seeing the joy on the faces of the kids at the check-out counter, as they left with new clothing of their choice for the new school year. ALE is truly an organization which makes an impact on thousands of young lives in the area!

Operation School Bell does an amazing job of helping students get the clothes they need for school. I know our students that have been hekped really appreciate it and we have definitely seen these students connect better to the school. As a counselor, I have also gone to watch them in action and see the compassion and care that is given to the children during their shopping. Every student I talk to says how much this changes their lives. Thank you Operation School Bell!

This organization is so welcoming and gracious to their volunteers! Because of the many needs in the community, the morale of the volunteers is crucial to helping those in need. The children who have the shopping experience express such thankfulness for their clothes and are sure to fit in better at school. This organization enables many school children to be successful!

Assistance League of the Eastside has been incredibly helpful to the homeless moms and kids we serve at Acres of Diamonds. I am personally so grateful for their efforts to make sure every new family that moves here is welcomed with all they need to start their new life.

Our families come from the streets, cars and other unsafe places. When they arrive the welcome baskets from Assistance League let them know right away that they matter and that there is a huge community of people who believe in their ability to make long term life change... which always starts with their first night of safety.

Assistance League is incredibly strong at learning what the needs are in the community, and working to meet them. They understand that not all forms of help are helpful! They ask good questions, and tailor their gifts to things that will truly be a hand up versus a hand out.

When they come on campus and host our birthday parties, they make the families feel loved and celebrated. Their parties have become a big highlight for our moms and kids.

Thank you Assistance League of the Eastside for all you do.

I have worked with this group for almost 2 years and what a joy it is to work Operation School Bell! Last night one of our 11 year old clients asked to take a photo with us, since this was the very first time she was able to pick out new clothes for school. Her gratitude was so heartfelt, that I can't wait to work this event again.

I am the Principal of Redmond High School and I can't tell you how much we appreciate the support of the Assistance League through Operation School Bell. Because of this initiative, our students whose families cannot afford to buy them school clothes are able to start the school year looking and feeling "just like everyone else" - something that is enormously important to an adolescent. This support does more than give a student clothes to wear, and the ability to choose those clothes for him/herself (another very important thing for young people) but, by removing the anxiety, it also removes one barrier to academic success. Thank you!

For more than ten years, Assistance League of the Eastside has been our phenomenal partner, working with LifeWire to provide critical supportive services to domestic violence survivors and their children. They created the Starting Over Support Baskets Program for LifeWire--providing essential household items year round for the homeless families we serve.

The true impact of the Assistance League of the Eastside is found in the compassion they show for families and children in need in our community. We are grateful to partner with such a dynamic team who puts caring and commitment into action to make our community a better place.

I was part of a group or Redmond Rotarians that assisted ALE with their Operation School Bell event in Redmond. It was a well organized and delightful event. In just a couple hours, we made a positive impact on hundreds of children in the Redmond area. I was glad to be a part of it and plan to help again next year.

What a joy to be at the grocery check out telling about the Assistance League of the Eastside and its work through Operation School Bell and have the customer service (bagger) exclaim "I love Operation School Bell. It has helped my family so much!" That's when I knew we have been effective within our community.
