Review for Community Volunteers in Medicine, Inc., West Chester, PA, USA
In 2010, I had no insurance, was unemployed after two back surgeries, was living in a homeless shelter and was diagnosed with pulmonary embolism (PE) after an ER trip/IP admit at Chester County Hospital. Dr. Mary provided me outstanding follow-up care, made sure I had the correct medications and dosages and provided a level of care that can only truly be defined as caring and compassionate. She is the doctor of the old days; the person who studied medicine to help people.
I live in FL and am now 5-years out from my first PE, and have recently had another PE. I am working; I have a home; I have insurance. The level of care I have now is substandard, at best, and I've had issues with my insurance company and healthcare providers who seem to be more attentive to profit than patient outcomes. If I still lived in the West Chester, PA, area I would pay CVIM out-of-pocket cash because I'd know that my recovery and healthy future were a priority.
This charity provides medical services on a sliding-fee basis or free of charge based on one's income. They have a full staff of volunteers, most of whom speak Spanish. They treat everyone, regardless of income, social status, etc., with the dignity and respect they deserve.

Review for Big Cat Rescue, Corp., Odessa, FL, USA
I started following this charity when I lived in PA in 2005, and the guy who lived about a mile from me kept a cougar in a 12' x 12' cage. Their advocacy to protect big cats motivated me to write to my elected officials with the hope that they would intervene by passing laws to prevent this type of animal abuse, and I continue to write to my lawmakers and sign petitions to help big cats today.
I was so excited when I moved to Tampa in 2013 and could visit BCR in person! The tour was super educational; I learned so much about the different types of big cats they had, and that the majority of them came to BCR from abusive and inhumane situations. They are doing amazing work by educating the public about roadside zoos and the dangers of exposing an unknowing public to wild animals.
They also provide rehabilitation for injured, local big cats, like the Florida Bobcat and Florida Panther and release them back into the wild when they're healthy again. Additionally, I learned that the volunteers who intern there act as surrogate moms for little cats with help from the local animal shelter in an effort to rehome the kittens once they are weaned and age-appropriate for adoption.
Will visit again this year when the weather gets cooler!
