It wasn't until my youngest son was deployed to Afghanistan that I really grasped how important it is that we as a people and a nation, hold onto the memory of our bravest, best, and brightest who have donated their all for us. Nothing could heal the pain of losing a son, daughter, brother, sister, husband, or wife in defense of our freedom. It is at least an acknowledgement that the terrible price paid was at least revered by the survivors. Not just the family, but the family of patriots who stand behind the family. I was fortunate to have a healthy son return. That is only a matter of luck. I could just as soon been a gold star father who would ache forever to have his son remembered as a hero by his countrymen.
