Review for Mercer County Food Bank, Sharon, PA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I have been involved with the Warehouse for the past 9 years as a volunteer and board member. I can't say enough positive things about this outstanding nonprofit. With only 6.5 employees and many volunteers, they provide , through 34 member agencies, food for 4,000 households a month in Mercer County. I know of no other local agency that can claim this kind of impact on so many people. They are truly deserving of a top rating and could benefit greatly from the media package.

As a board member and frequent volunteer, I cannot say enough about this quality organization. They are wise stewards of their money, preferring to give to their clients rather than padding their salaries. There are only enough employees to accomplish what they need to do instead of being top heavy as many organizations are. A great deal of work is done by volunteers, such as the job of receptionist and many computer tasks. They truly deserve the designation of top non-profit.

This is the "best bang for your buck" anywhere. There is no worry about money wasted on high salaries or unnecessary expenditures. This organization is very fiscally responsible and aware of the importance of spending funds on its clients. Much of the computer work and warehouse functions are performed by volunteers. Even the receptionists are volunteers. I am very proud to spend my time and money with the Community Food Warehouse of Mercer County.

In this day and age where nonprofits are under fire for mismanagement, there is a shining star: the Community Food Warehouse. Run by two ladies who are siblings, there are only 3 paid full-time staff in the office, 1 part-time clerk, 1 part-time Senior Food Box coordinator (paid by the state), a full time warehouse person and a part-time person. Volunteers fulfill computer and office duties. All receptionists are volunteers. This minimal staff oversees 32 member agencies which feed 8,000 people a month. To me, this is what a nonprofit should be.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Nothing. They are doing a great job!

This nonprofit is the best one I have ever been associated with. I participated in their Race/Walk, then began volunteering there when I retired. I now serve as vice president of their board. We serve 8000 people per month in the county through our agencies. Until we recently hired another full-time person, the work was done by 3 full-time people: an executive ddirector, agency coordinator and warehouse supervisor, part-time clerk, part-time senior food box coordinator and part-time driver. All the salaries combined were less than some executive directors. This is truly a mission rather than a job for those involved. Clients are treated with respect and concern. It is a truly amazing and rewarding agency.
