Review for Shakespeare & Company, Inc., Lenox, MA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Shakespeare & Company has been a creative home for me. I have grown in my humanity, created enlightening theater and learned what it is to be truly generous.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

having been both a participant of the teaching and working as an employee.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

put serious money into housing. Artists are willing to work for low wages when they believe in the work, but when the housing is so awful that is a deal breaker because it leads to exhaustion because the artists are not truly able to rest.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The commitment to excellence and the exploration of what it is to be a human being through the direct experience of Shakespeare's text.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

clearly overworked, yet doing their best to stay open to possibility.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Reach a wider audience through which to heal. It could provide more jobs for artists. It would help provide housing that would provide a place for the artists to rest and restore themselves.

Ways to make it better...

the housing were better. As it is, the housing it abominable. Too many people are sharing a space that is not able to be maintained. At the end of a long day of a six day work week, cleaning mouse droppings to cook is far less than ideal.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Perpetually barely making payroll is way too stressful, takes up way too much energy and creates an environment of survival instead of creativity.

One thing I'd also say is that...

The company would do better if they followed more of a sports model in casting the best person for the job, instead of casting people from the office who are unable to fully be present in either of their tasks. Too often there is a weak link in the chain

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About once a year

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009
