Review for Sarasota Contemporary Dance Inc, Sarasota, FL, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Fuzion Dance Artists performs outstanding professional shows. But in addition, an unusual and greatly appreciated (or maybe underappreciated) aspect of the company is the amount of effort and work its members put into outreach programs: making dance as an art form more accessible to the general public, using art for social change, diversifiying and refusing typical dance stereotypes, the list goes on... Working with children and adults of all ages, abilities, and socioeconomic status, Fuzion has the willingness and drive to bring dance to anyone. I've heard participants describe their classes in ways from "a great break from the daily grind" to "therapeutic". At New College of Florida, dancers (typically with no formal training) did projects such as site-specific dancing throughout the community and choreographing "self-portraits," which not only developed a better understanding of body movement, but allowed for soul-searching and exploration of self. It's exciting to consider how much they can grow with our community's support.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

friends, classmates, and myself who have grown as individuals due to an aspect (or several) of this very special company.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

learning from amazing dancers who I typically wouldn't be fortunate enough to dance with.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

passionate, open, and welcoming!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

get the world dancing, feeling confident, expressive, healthy and happy.

Role:  General Member of the Public & I thoroughly enjoy their performances, sporadically participate in classes, and participated in the SalOm Project, which was the topic of my senior thesis.
