Review for Capital Stage Company, Sacramento, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

This is a phenomenal little theatre company that hugely enriches the Sacramento performing arts scene. I've been coming to plays at Capital Stage for five years now, and I've never seen a bad production. The play selection, acting, direction, sets, music - everything is excellent. As good as you could find anywhere in the Bay Area or LA, or anywhere else for that matter. There's an intelligence that pervades every aspect of every production. Customer service is fantastic and the atmosphere is welcoming. I just worry about staff burnout - everyone is doing so much all the time and they simply will not let quality suffer no matter how many hours they have to put in. Another drawback is their current location, which offers no hint that there is in fact a theatre located on board the Delta King riverboat.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

watching plays that are thoughtfully selected, thought provoking, and produced with total commitment to quality.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

raise the money to bring in a full-time development director.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

feeling like part of the team that puts together such outstanding work.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

intelligent, dedicated friendly, risk-taking, caring, humorous, and unbelievably talented.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

show the world what regional theatre is meant to be like; put together an incredible theatre arts education program; develop local playwrights and other theatrical talent; tour to other parts of the Central Valley that don't have anything this amazing.

Ways to make it better...

I knew that there was a broad and deep enough donor base to support the staff properly.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

getting the word out to theatre lovers and arts supporters that Capital Stage (a) is out there and (b) needs their support through contributions as well as ticket purchases.

One thing I'd also say is that...

we need additional board members - folks who love the arts and who aren't afraid to roll up their sleeves and help out with a range of tasks.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every week

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

Role:  Board Member & I've written grants for Capital Stage, helped with the annual fundraiser and strategic planning process, and of course attend every production.
