Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Arts & Culture, Theater

Mission: Capital Stage Company's mission is to be a dynamic leader in the evolution of the contemporary live theatre landscape in the Capital region and to passionately engage audiences in the art of live storytelling with bold, innovative plays performed by professional artists, in an intimate, up close setting. With a strong commitment to expanding the base of working artists in the greater Sacramento region, we shall develop a company of actors, directors, writers, designers, and technical staff who are dedicated to bringing bold, lively productions of contemporary and classic plays to our community. While part of the mission of any theater company is to entertain its audience, we at Capital Stage feel strongly that the productions we mount address issues that are vital to understanding the society we live in and ourselves as human beings in that society. We address themes of power and manipulation in relationships between men and women, children and parents, and organizations and individuals. We invite audiences to question the ethics and meaning of art, the definitions of sanity and intelligence, and the line between exploitation and legitimate relationship. We believe that in a large and growing urban environment, where individuals and groups are constantly bombarded with information and demands for decisions, the need for thoughtful examination of our interactions in society has never been greater.

I am impressed with Capital Stage. They are a young theatre company but one that has mastered its product-providing quality theatre. They are professional yet personal. They believe in providing edgy and bold works but also promoting new works with their annual playwright's festival. They embrace theatre and embrace it with their audience members by providing an opportunity to go with them to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. This is just another example of their high level of "community". They periodically give "talk back" sessions after shows that promote this too. I've had the opportunity to introduce a coworker of mine to the theatre experience recently and took her to Capital Stage. Her first play with Capital Stage won't be her last. So looking forward to seeing more productions with Capital Stage and introducing them to more people in the future.

Capital Stage is my favorite professional theatre in Sacramento and I’m never disappointed with the productions. Always interesting, thought provoking, and intelligent. The acting and directing is top notch. Being involved with theatre myself; I’m also interested in the sets and lighting. They do an excellent job in that category. I am amazed what they do with that stage! The management staff treats everyone with kindness and respect. It’s that personal touch the staff gives that I think is the best.

Wow! Capital Stage is my favorite professional theatre in Sacramento. I always expect to see great productions there and I always do! They continue to shock me with their talent, creativity, boldness, and professionalism. Also, I was a student in their Youth Theatre Program and was satisfied with the training I received. In the program, I was challenged as an actor and grew a lot as a result. Our instructor gave each student individual attention, tailored to their unique needs. Capital Stage is a gem in Sacramento!

I have been on the Board for about 4 years and have found it very rewarding and a great way to advance the arts in Sacramento. Capital Stage consistently delivers intelligent, thought-provoking, entertaining and edgy professional theater. Plan on going out for drinks after a performance you and your friends will want to dissect what you have seen.

Capitol Stage is a unique, extraordinary theatre company that brings Sacramento something we don't get enough of...edgy contemporary theatre. Their work is consistently strong and always interesting. An added bonus, is that the management team is not only made up of working actors, but the nicest, most welcoming group you could imagine. It's a terrific company, growing by leaps and bounds because everyone who sees something there, wants to come back, subscribe, get involved. Bravo to Capitol Stage! I hope they're around for a long, long time.

This is a gem of a company, stowed away within the touristy glitz of Old Sacramento. As a Sacramento native, I never would have believed that one of my favorite places to perform and collaborate would emerge out of Old Sac. Capital Stage maintains an unflinching level of artistry that makes artists clamor to be there, and their audience is growing. Fearless play selection, commitment to strong local talent and an enormously talented and committed staff have made my experiences with Capital Stage some of the most rewarding of my career.

This is a phenomenal little theatre company that hugely enriches the Sacramento performing arts scene. I've been coming to plays at Capital Stage for five years now, and I've never seen a bad production. The play selection, acting, direction, sets, music - everything is excellent. As good as you could find anywhere in the Bay Area or LA, or anywhere else for that matter. There's an intelligence that pervades every aspect of every production. Customer service is fantastic and the atmosphere is welcoming. I just worry about staff burnout - everyone is doing so much all the time and they simply will not let quality suffer no matter how many hours they have to put in. Another drawback is their current location, which offers no hint that there is in fact a theatre located on board the Delta King riverboat.

There's really not enough stars to rate this company properly. Everything is done extremely well, and the people genuinely care for, and appreciate not only their subscribers, but their volunteers. Helping out at Capital Stage feels more like hanging out with friends than work. There's always a sense of acomplishment, and you always feel appreciated.

This small professional theatre company has completely shaken up the performing arts scene in Sacramento. Performing in a relatively small venue, Capital Stage provides breathtakingly intimate and skillful characterizations alongside provocative themes. Their audience continues to grow as lovers of great theatre find them and become loyal to their consistency. This company is solidly run and growing. I am consistently moved by the so-called "magic of theatre" from this company. I am a subscriber and have enjoyed most of the productions I have seen there (nothing's perfect!). The staff has always been exceedingly curteous and accomodating. Perhaps this company needs a larger venue to spread the word --- but the intimacy is what makes their work so magical. I also miss the days when finances didn't so strictly dictate the cast size of a production. But oh well! That has meant only more time to explore characterization, which is what they do best anyway.
