Review for International Topical Steroid Awareness Network (ITSAN), Dacula, GA, USA
I was a long-term user of topical steroids up until 2011, when I found the precursor website, which would \later become ITSAN. At the time little was known about topical steroid addiction and withdrawal, outside of a few obscure dermatology journal articles. Once I read the experiences of the website author and later president of ITSAN, I realized what was happening with my skin and stopped using the creams.
Once I quit, I endured about 18 months of misery - red burning, peeling, itching skin, somewhat akin to a burn patient. This experience is typical of cessation of topical steroids but very frightening if one does not understand what is happening. Fortunately ITSAN is now there to educate others on the dangers of such drugs and to help those enduring these withdrawal symptoms.
Gaining such benefit, I donated my time and money and later was asked to serve on the board.
Also, since I appear not able to comment on other reviews I will make note of poor reviews by "dan-d" and "andher." Dan-d joined the forum in 2013 and quickly proceeded to break forum rules. He wanted to use ITSAN as his own soapbox for his political opinions and other unrelated topics, many times generating posts longer than his review here. When reprimanded by ITSAN moderators he demonstrated erratic behavior and began trolling one moderator through private email. He was banned from the forum and clearly has an axe to grind.
"Andher" is a subscriber to his blog and apparently bought into his hostilities. Out of the blue this member of a few months who had posted a handful of times wrote a deeply personal scathing attack post against the president and the charity, which baffled us because we had no idea who it even was. She was banned for her personal attacks. Contrary to dan-d's claim that ITSAN quickly bans people, in fact he and andher are two of a total of three people banned from ITSAN in its history to date.
