Review for International Topical Steroid Awareness Network (ITSAN), Dacula, GA, USA
ITSAN saved my sanity and my life when I was suffering from out-of-control skin and internal health issues due to steroid over-use. In October, 2011, I stopped using the topical steroids I had been putting on my skin for many years. I was horrified to find my skin going crazy with redness, itching, pain and peeling. I also felt hot and cold alternately and I couldn't sleep. I was going crazy. I found Kelly Palace's website addictedskin.com (now replaced by ITSAN.org) and Joey Brown's facebook page. I was blown away! It was obvious that what I was suffering from was Red Skin Syndrome a.k.a. Topical Steroid Addiction/Withdrawal. The forum that Kelly had set up with her website was the only thing that got me through that first horrible year, sharing with other sufferers and supporting each other emotionally. I watched the group grow from 50 people to 100's of members and I was there when ITSAN was first created by this awesome group of volunteers. After a while, I felt so strongly about the work that the group was doing that I became a board member. I'm now proud to be part of an organization that helps so many people. I've watched many, many people go from terrible suffering to healthy skin and back to normal life, STEROID-FREE. We haven't solved the problem of eczema yet, but we are teaching 100's of people about the dangers of over-use of steroids. So many people think they have out-of-control eczema, when actually their skin is reacting to steroid addiction. I am now almost 100% back to normal skin, enjoying a healthy, active life, and feeling totally thrilled that I have been completely off steroids since October, 2011. I was even able to get off my asthma steroid inhalers (to be done with caution!) and my nasal inhalers. The people involved in ITSAN, both board members, volunteers and general members, are the most loving, caring group of people I've ever known. I now have friends all over the world who I feel sincerely care about me and my health, as I care about them. The board members are incredibly hard-working, dedicated volunteers who receive nothing in return other than the satisfaction of knowing they're helping others to help themselves. I have nothing but praise for the mission, caring & integrity of this group.
