Review for Action In Community Through Service of Prince William County, Dumfries, VA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

My husband has been involved with ACTS for many years, but he and I have only been married for four years and I came from the west coast to Virginia, so I knew nothing of this organization before arriving. Paul suggested that if I was ever looking for a volunteer service opportunity that ACTS could fix me up very quickly and would provide all the training I would need to do a good job. He was so right. I worked for about six months in the food pantry on the busiest day of the week. Quite often we would see as many as 60 families during my four hour shift. The work was so rewarding, and the people were so appreciative of the help that I really felt like I was making a difference. Recently I have had to take time off to deal with a slipped disc, but when that gets fixed, I'll be back. I truly enjoyed working with dedicated volunteers and those who came because they were court ordered to do community service. Regardless of why they were there, almost everybody rapidly understood their importance to the team effort, and our productivity was really amazing. Sharen Moessner

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

This non-profit is truly dedicated to its mission of ending hunger, homelessness and domestic violence. So little is spent on overhead that I wonder how they can keep operating as effectively as they do.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Staff and volunteers here are so unselfish and caring that it really makes you feel humble and wishing you could do more to help.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

ACTS could pay off their modest mortgage debt ($400K) and could replace its ancient shelter with a new one, about a $600K project. The rest would go into their Futures Fund to be ready to respond to community needs and staff salary increases.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every week
