Review for The Chelsea Hutchison Foundation, Littleton, CO, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I learned about the Chelsea Hutchison Foundation approximately 18 months ago when my wife conducted an on-line search for our old friends Julie and Doug. We were very fortunate to have been friends of the family and unfortunately lost contact with them after moving to Virginia. We knew Chelsea and other members of the Hutchison's family while living in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.
When my wife discovered a link on the internet for Julie, she also found the story about Chelsea passing from Epilepsy SUDEP. She immediately told me about rediscovering Julie but also the sad story about their beautiful and caring daughter, Ms. chelsea.
Upon learning more about her passing and about Epilepsy SUDEP, we asked Julie what we could do in Winchester to bring SUDEP awareness and to raise funds for the CHF. She told us about the 5K planned for Sept 2012 in Colorado and if we wanted to do one in Winchester.
We accepted the request and within four months of the initial discussion we hosted our first 5K and experienced the success of hosting over 150 participants and volunteers at the event. We raised a significant amount of money and greatly raised the awareness of Epilepsy SUDEP in this community. We brought participants from WV, PA, MD and other parts of VA to Winchester. TV and radio stations interviewed Julie and other families that experienced the curse of SUDEP. Two local newspapers wrote articles about our event and the importance of the work CHF was doing in VA and throughout the U.S.
Since the first walk, we established the Winchester Chapter of the CHF and with the outstanding support of Doug and Julie, we encouraged the city of Winchester to honor CHF with a special proclamation for the outstanding services that CHF provided to local families, hosted a movie fundraiser, recently hosted the 2nd Annual 5K, encouraged high schools students to develop projects and partnered with local service organizations.
All the work we have done during the last eighteen months demonstrates the outstanding support provided by CHF to encourage individuals like myself and my wife to reach out and spread the words and provide funds to families with Epilepsy. The love and care generated by this Foundation has radiated throughout the country and brought seizure response trained dogs, Emfit Monitors and Smart Watches to many individuals and families. This is a very caring Foundation and we are very grateful for being a member of the extended family of volunteers assisting them.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

encourage them to review their by laws and make timely changes to allow the Foundation to grow in other areas that would provide more services to individuals and families with Epilepsy. And with the changes, I would encourage them to establish more chapters and provide retreats/camps for families.
