Review for Opportunity House / VACAVILLE SOLANO SERVICES CORPORATION, Vacaville, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I've been volunteering at the Vacaville Opportunity House Thrift Store for several years now, and I've seen it grow from the small store on Main Street in downtown Vacaville to it's much larger location on Peabody Road. There is always a huge variety of merchandise; you never know what will be donated. The prices are reasonable, and they often have sales for different occasions, a Senior day on Tuesdays, and a 40% off sale on a Sunday at the end of the month. There are some paid employees, but there are also a lot of volunteers at both the thrift store and the shelter, as well as a board of hard working people. The proceeds go to support the new homeless shelter that is located on Bennett Hill Court in Vacaville. It's a wonderful house that was built with donations and a lot of materials and physical help by the community. I know it has made a huge difference in many people's lives, and I'm proud to be a small part of their success. They have done wonders for our community by helping the homeless find shelter, housing, jobs, and confidence. The Festival of Trees donates thousands of dollars each year to Opportunity House, and many youth groups volunteer their time. It's an amazing success story, and people are invited to visit the shelter and see for themselves how it all works.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

It's difficult to keep a thrift store with so many different volunteers working very neat. It's a challenge, but I'd probably try to set it up more like a consignment store or retail store where all similar items are located together to make shopping easier.
