I have served as a board member of this organization for nearly 9 years, and during this time, I still find myself in awe of the support we get from our community in support of our mission. I think that this is due to being great stewards of our resources, effectively demonstrating our successes, and rising to meet the ever-changing challenges in not only funding our mission, but the changing characteristics and needs of the homeless in our community.
Love hearing the stories about how the O House program is impacting the lives of woman, men and families. This organization is helping those who are willing to put in the work to rebuild their life and become productive members in the community. Thankful our City has such a place for people to go when they need a second chance.
Colleen Berumen is doing a great job with O House! Because of O House, Vacaville does not have women and children on the street. Please consider donating as much as you can to this wonderful organization!
Opportunity House is a much needed and utilized resource in Vacaville, California. As a homeless shelter alongside a work to housing program, it is a vital stepping stone to self sufficiency for those who's lives have encountered stumbling blocks and instability.
Case Managers work with residents to help them achieve goals, stay on track, be future focused and empower themselves for a brighter tomorrow.
Through program requirements such as budgeting, community service, housing searches and household chores, accountability is key & residents are given the tools they need to successfully manage their time, involve themselves with their community and grow as individuals.
I have worked at Opportunity House as an Operations Assistant for 10 months, and have grown as an individual because of it!
I was a resident at the shelter back in 1999. I was able to leave successfully due to their program teaching me how to be, and what it means to be, a productive member of society. So grateful for this program and what I learned, bringing it all with me through the years and in to today.
The Opportunity house did so much for me, I was a resident here a while back. My first impression of this place was wow, it's not what assumed what a shelter looked like. Instead, I walked into a beautiful facility that provided me with a room over my head, food, basic needs everything I needed. This place was not a shelter to me, being here allowed me to feel like home when I didn't have one at the time. The staff provided me with love, encouragement, and support I needed to get through my time there. The tools, resources, and workshops they offered me helped me grow and be successful. This place is definitely created for people who really want a better life, a stepping stool to a brighter future. I loved this place so much even when I left successfully and moved on I found myself coming back to still volunteer, I could never shake this place. Opportunity house still allowed me to come in for anything I needed even after my out process. After venturing out I left my two Jobs and came to Vacaville social services for an "Opportunity" Currently, I'm employed by Vacaville Social Services Corps, and I wouldn't want to be working anywhere else, we are all like family. It's such a rewarding feeling to be able to help those who are in the shoes I once was; to show each person who comes in that good things can still happen. That everyone one is so deserving of good things and each life is well worth preserving. -RF
Vacaville Social Services Corporation has committed itself since 1991 to help break the cycle of homelessness in Solano County. By offering a work-to-housing, sober living environment program, residents receive financial coaching, individual case management, sobriety support, as well as life skills. When people graduate from this program, they go on to become productive community members.
I love the OHouse Thrift Store!!
I donate there regularly and love that: 1) it's a local spot and everything stays local, 2) they take anything, and 3) the folks that work the drop off zone are always there with a smile and willing to help you unload your car. Doesn't hurt that it's a tax write-off, either ;-)
As for shopping, I've found some screaming deals on furniture, house goods, as well as costume clothes. You can't beat the prices at any other Vacaville thrift shop.
I also decorate a mini-tree every year for the Festival of Trees. I LOVE shopping here for my tree decor ... and the fact that they give anything from the store to you for free (if it's for your tree) totally helps.
Thanks, Ohouse!!
I have donated here and sometimes I shop here, the people are always friendly and most importantly your donation stays local!
It has been an amazing experience working with other volunteers in order to make Opportunity House such a success. So many dedicated professionals in Vacaville offer their expertise to make this life-changing program possible. Everyone is so blessed to hear how so many of the clients are able to find work soon after moving into the Opportunity House and to learn of parents being reunited with their children.
As others have shared, the Opportunity House Thrift Store is a great place for rummaging and finding good deals, especially on the third Sunday of the month - discount Sunday. In addition, there are the semi-annual jewelry days that are my favorite. The best part about the thrift store, though, is knowing it all goes to a great cause, supporting one of the best homeless/transitional programs in the country.
I shop at the Vacaville Opportunity House Thrift Store on Peabody Rd. in Vacaville almost every week because it's FUN to find useful, clever, beautiful and crazy things that enrich my family's life and make us smile. I'm always on "the hunt" for certain treasures, and I am never disappointed because eventually I WILL find them at Opportunity House. The staff is good-humored and friendly and the cashier near the door calls out a welcome every time I show up. I guess you can tell I love shopping there. I do.
For several years now, I've been a volunteer at the Vacaville Opportunity House Thrift Store, located on Peabody Road in Vacaville, CA. This thrift store is amazing in that it has so many clubs, individuals, organizations, churches, youth groups, etc. that give their time and donations to make this a success. The proceeds to to support a homeless shelter in Vacaville. The Festival of Trees was established to also support the Opportunity House. This is one of the best functions at Christmas time. The number of families and individuals that the homeless shelter has helped over the years is very impressive. People have found support in a variety of ways, not just a place to stay. They have received medical aid, housing, transitional housing, help writng resumes, help finding jobs, etc. I have no regrets about choosing the Opportunity House to volunteer, as it's an amazing organization.
I've been volunteering at the Vacaville Opportunity House Thrift Store for several years now, and I've seen it grow from the small store on Main Street in downtown Vacaville to it's much larger location on Peabody Road. There is always a huge variety of merchandise; you never know what will be donated. The prices are reasonable, and they often have sales for different occasions, a Senior day on Tuesdays, and a 40% off sale on a Sunday at the end of the month. There are some paid employees, but there are also a lot of volunteers at both the thrift store and the shelter, as well as a board of hard working people. The proceeds go to support the new homeless shelter that is located on Bennett Hill Court in Vacaville. It's a wonderful house that was built with donations and a lot of materials and physical help by the community. I know it has made a huge difference in many people's lives, and I'm proud to be a small part of their success. They have done wonders for our community by helping the homeless find shelter, housing, jobs, and confidence. The Festival of Trees donates thousands of dollars each year to Opportunity House, and many youth groups volunteer their time. It's an amazing success story, and people are invited to visit the shelter and see for themselves how it all works.
I love the Opportunity House, this is the place to go for us on SS, I find some great deals on things I couldn't afford if I bought new, I am in the store at least twice a week, great and friendly personnel, and volunteers working there, Have been going here for the past 7 years, ,way back when they had the small store...keep up the good work,,we need you Shirley
Becoming homeless in most cases is not an individuals choice, and it is because of non profits like the Vacaville Opportunity house that people in our community have a place to turn to when needed. The Opportunity House is by far the best non profit in the fine city of Vacaville, serving those in their greatest time of need. I feel blessed each and every day that I am able to contribute to the growing changes in peoples lives, and always keep in perspective the role that this house is playing in helping implement these changes. The Opportunity House is so much more than a non profit business, as it serves the entire community in many ways on an individual level. The staff and board members are caring and compassionate people who believe in the common good of the people that they serve. I consider myself truly lucky to be a part of this organization and look forward to the growing changes that will define this company, employees, clients, and the community they serve. ~ Shaun C.
