Review for Spark Microgrants, New York, NY, USA
The founder of Spark MicroGrants, Sasha, is a former University of Vermont student (class of 2010) who I had the pleasure of meeting one time when she was an undergrad. At the time she was spending her vacations building schools in Sudan. After she graduated she started Spark MicroGrants, and she has been doing wonderful work in Africa ever since. I know this in part because her accomplishments were celebrated in the UVM alumni magazine last year. Her approach (the way I understand it) is to assist small communities to identify issues and design innovative solutions, and then to help them fund the implementation of those solutions. This works well because the community has ownership, not outsiders. My personal favorite is a remote community called Kajevuba that decided to take up bee-keeping as a way to sustain themselves, improve their diet, and pollinate their crops. I contributed to a small grant to help them get started, and felt really good about it. I hope others will check out what this young woman is accomplishing and consider helping to support a project.

Review for T E N Charities (a.k.a. Her Future Coalition), St Augustine, FL, USA
I checked out this charity, and I know that the founders have dedicated their lives and fortunes to helping survivors of human rights abuses to make new and productive lives for themselves. They have beautiful products too. The cards made of handmade paper are gorgeous. The jewelry glows with personal attention to detail and pride. And giving these items to others is like giving two gifts; the item itself, and the knowledge that someone who really needs a lift is getting one.
