Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Civil Rights, International, International Human Rights, Job Training, Women, Womens Rights

Mission: Since 2005 Her Future has been creating powerful and positive change in the lives of survivors of gender violence and girls at the highest risk. We break the cycle of poverty and exploitation, by providing education – and a full range of services that support education – to survivors and the most vulnerable girls in India and Nepal. EDUCATION: Her Future’s education programs serve over 500 children a year with high quality education and a full circle of services that make school success possible. Our education programs serve survivors of gender violence and girls at the highest risk, and are designed to address the specific challenges of each student – whether she is growing up in a rescue shelter, urban slum, red light area, or a rural village with a high incidence of trafficking. JOB TRAINING: Poverty is listed as a root cause of trafficking in almost every published study. Because poverty is a major risk factor, it must be addressed in order for survivors to remain free and to reduce their vulnerability to exploitation. Survivors who return home without job options are often re-trafficked or stigmatized by their family and community. Women who earn have higher status and more power in their family and community. SHELTER: Her Future works with local operating partners to build, expand and maintain shelters for rescued girls, and to support the ongoing needs of girls in shelter care. Having a safe and loving place to recover -guarded from traffickers and pimps – is a crucial first step in a girl’s journey to recovery. Many girls are rescued as children and need a safe, loving home until they reach adulthood. In our shelters, they receive counseling, education, and vocational training. MENTAL HEALTH: The girls we serve have experienced repeated and severe abuse, chronic stress, and betrayal by their families. Their trauma level is high, and we address this with one-on-one counseling, group counseling, referral to psychiatric providers if medication is needed, regular assessments and reviews, therapeutic arts, and trauma-informed mind/body work.

Sarah, the Founder of Her Future Coalition, is an extraordinary woman and a true embodiment of philanthropy! She made her journey all the way from the US to visit us in Samburu County, Kenya, where she saw firsthand the work we do. Since then, she has offered her unwavering support, providing education and essential for our girls. My visit to her projects in Kathmandu, Nepal, further showed me the incredible impact of her work, as her and her team offer shelter and education to children in those communities. Her goal in life is to offer a smile to children and even their caregivers! Sarah and her team at Her Future Coalition are true unsung heroes!

The most impactful NGO I have ever encountered. I have volunteered for them since 2006 and I see the lowest overhead of any charity and the most caring and the most successful work with trafficking survivors and preventing at-risk children and teens from being trafficked!

My Rotary club has gotten involved with one of the HFC sites (in the Himalayas of Nepal) and have done so many successful things with them, all enabled by HFC, to truly change the lives of girls at risk due to poverty and low status. The culture is being changed and opportunities are opening up for the girls.

And this is only one of HFC's 12 - 14 sites in key parts of the world where trafficking is endemic.

My UK charity, Pipal Tree, has been working in a hugely successful partnership with Her Future Coalition for coming up to 20 years. In that time I have been so impressed with its inspirational Founder, Sarah Symons, who combines the common sense, insight and passion that makes her the most capable of leaders. Her values permeate throughout Her Future Coalition and into our partnership. Sarah leads from in front and is a regular visitor to our joint project work in Kathmandu, including to open the silver jewellery workshop for vulnerable young women that our nonprofits helped found and that would not have survived the challenges of COVID without Her Future Coalition's core support both financial and in volunteer consultancy. No one was better qualified to cut the tape than Sarah!

I am a weekly English volunteer at the Hasta Memorial school in Nepal, and I've seen firsthand the positive impact that Sarah and the HFC team have on the women and girls there. The members of the local community and survivors of human trafficking are given knowledge and the tools they need to make local change. They are provided with practical skills that open up new options in life that they would not have otherwise had. It is really amazing to see how much of a difference HFC can have in women's lives.

Her Future Coalition is an incredible organization that partners with all participants and constituencies to improve the circumstances and futures for girls and women healing from the system of gender based violence and trafficking.

I have volunteered multiple times in their programs in India and Nepal and it is the most loving, warm, wonderful community.

I especially live the long term nature of the program where people can be supported and stay involved for long term investment.

“We are seeking a person to help establish and initiate an English tutoring program for a range of ages in our new Learning Center in Kolkata” through the Felix Fellowship was the beginning of a wonderful adventure and opportunity to travel to India. I was awarded the Fellowship in June, 2022 then the summer was spent researching resources and learning about Kolkata, India as well as the Bengali language. I also spent time learning more about Her Future Coalition and how the Fellowship would support the organization.

September, 2022 seems like such a long time ago now but it was the beginning of teaching and working with the staff and students at the center in Sovabazar in Kolkata. The center staff were very friendly and welcoming and the English Language classroom is a beautiful space to teach in. Being the first Fellowship teacher meant that I brought resources with me from Canada and developed a basic plan in place to begin teaching levels from beginner to advanced English students.

During my time in Kolkata I worked with many different people in the and was so amazed at how the staff at Her Future Coalition supported everyone in the center as well as local community groups. I met and coordinated with partner organizations who are all working so hard to empower and support the women that they work with.

There was also a short trip to Nepal to meet with partner organizations and their facilities. The highlight was a visit to Anjali and her school in the countryside as well as a short teacher training with the teachers in the school.

The three months passed quickly with lots of laughter and learning. It was amazing to see the confidence build in the students and also see some of them move on to start their careers. I am continuing to work with the Advanced group with a weekly online meeting and assignments on Google Classroom. It is fulfilling to see the continued desire to learn. I look forward to keeping contact with other students and hearing about their growth as they continue their English language learning.

I feel extremely fortunate to have visited and worked in Kolkata with this organization. Their impact on the community is difficult to measure but the joy in everyone is evident. I will continue to support Her Future Coalition in any way that I am able to.

I had the personal privilege of becoming acquainted with this organization in India and can attest to the massive difference it is making to the lives of girls and women. It is difficult for those in Western cultures to imagine the disadvantages some women and girls face in South Asia but HFC is tackling these head-on and lighting a path to a better life in which women are empowered to support themselves with new knowledge and skills. A privilege to be involved and supporting this organization.

I learned of Her Future Coalition through the book, "Standing In the Way", Co-written by Sarah Symonds (Her Future founder) and Anjali Tamang, a young Nepali woman who was trafficked, but was rescued and has received counseling, finances, education and a beautiful future through Sarah, Her Future and other related organizations. Now, Anjali has built an excellent school for children in the village of her origin. Her Future is helping with funds for construction, supplies and meals for these children. Her Future is breaking the cycle. These children now have a chance for a real future that doesn't include trafficking. Through my contact and fund-raising work for this school, Hasta Memorial School is changing the world, one child at a time. Next year, I will help teach art to women in Kolkotta and will coordinate the painting of a mural at the Hasta School, all coordinated through Her Future.
I recommend Her Future Coalition with 5 stars for the top-rated non-profit category.

I was introduced to Her Future Coalition through my work with the nonprofit, Together Women Rise, where I helped evaluate grant proposals for funding from many, many organizations including HFC. I subsequently met one of HFC's board members, Jeanette Pavini when she represented HFC at one of our meetings. Through Jeanette, I met Sarah Symons. In the past, I've evaluated many programs that aim to empower women and girls in many ways; through education, improved healthcare, vocational training and so on. HFC is impressive because they are a grassroots organization with a great determination and the infrastructure to rescue women and girls and help them re-start their lives by giving them all of these things, as well as a safe place in which to recover from the trauma of being trafficked. I currently help them with their jewelry sales in the Northern California Bay Area.

I sponsor a young girl who was once a victim of sex trafficking and now because of the efforts of TEN Charities is a thriving happy 14 year old. We write letters to each other and send photos. I recently returned from an impressive one month volunteer project with Her Future in Kolkata, India I can whole heartedly say this 15 year old non profit organization is accomplishing credible results with vulnerable girls in gravely impoverished + high risk areas. Not only does Her Future dare to go into these challenging areas they do so with genuine care + respect, while making a remarkable difference to end exploitation + poverty through what I witnessed is a comprehensive approach of education, safe shelter + high wage employment.

In my eyes this is what makes Her Future noteworthy. But what makes Her Future exceptional is they are not a short term fix or solution. They are not there because it is the social or politically correct thing to do. What makes Her Future exceptional is they believe in these girls + have made a genuine commitment to consistently be there on the ground supporting, guiding + offering honest tools for empowerment.

And Her Future intelligently recognizes emotional healing is part of the empowerment equation. I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to offer trauma sensitive therapy, yoga + mediation to the girls + staff. It hurt to see what has been taken from them + difficult to experience their suffering yet I found myself in admiration for their unflinching resilience + their collective movement toward healing.

Ending exploitation + slavery is our responsibility. Thankfully there are non profits like Her Future where we can actively help girls break through long standing oppressive barriers to claim their full potentials.

I feel so connected and I think they're just a stellar organization doing what they can mostly run by local people, a true global impact. I hope you consider them for this award!! Thank you.

I had the great pleasure of traveling to India and seeing the results of the work Her Future Coalition does. Meeting the dedicated Sarah Symons and some of the inspiring women who are currently staying in the shelter was proof enough what HFC does is working. The shelters are clean, roomy, full of activities and support. A place these women and children can call home while they create their futures. Setting these women up for a life time of stability and growth. I have nothing but admiration for Sarah and the other NGOs she works with.

Her Future Coalition is an organization of people who work out of pure love. I have been working with Sarah and the jewelry making team of HFC this year. They are producing my designs and the quality of craftsmanship is EXCELLENT. I could not be more impressed.
The opportunities the girls have thanks to HFC cannot be matched. Working with Sarah and the team has been a life altering experience for me. I truly cannot wait to start showing their work to the world.

Sarah Symons had a passion to help young women and girls find their way through the unimaginable horror of gender violence and sex trafficking. What she so carefully crafted is a way to offer SHELTER, EDUCATION and EMPLOYMENT to those in need. Her Future Coalition is a beacon of hope!

I first became interested in the jewelry. Then I found out the story and became a volunteer. I participated in a life changing immersion trip about a year and a half ago. I will be going back to Nepal and Kolkata next year.

The work is genuine - the work is important. This is a very honest and hard working charity.

I have been a part of the HFC family for 10 years in various capacities; employee, volunteer, advisor, donor and fundraiser. I absolutely LOVE this organization and their results-based successes working with survivors of extreme gender violence and empowering women and children. I seen floors on shelter homes added, survivors evolve into their true potential and children attend school for the first through HFC programs. The programs at HFC work and hundreds of lives have been positively impacted. I can’t wait for the next 10 years!

They have child sponsorship programs to allow girls to receive the formal education they need to accomplish their soar in the career of their choice, a jewelry program to train girls in goldsmithing and design to become entrepreneurs in the field, as well as rescue, shelter and counsel survivors of all forms of gender violence including, but not limited to, human trafficking. I have been working for TEN Charities for about one year now here in Kolkata, in charge of the Child Sponsorshp project. I am impressed with how TEN networks among like-minded groups here to protect at-risk women and children. My job is to interview and interact through expressive arts with the children who are receiving educational sponsorships, which allow them to attend school or special activities. In just one year, I've seen many of the children bloom. All children are able to learn and take control of their lives if education is a priority – and this is proven over and over again with the Child Sponsorship program and the commitment of TEN and all the groups it works with in Kolkata. Visiting the children and our partner organisations, and then reporting to the caring donors back in the US and the UK gives me a great sense of hope. I am proud to continue to build this bond, this circle of love that pushes ahead children from very low socio-economic backgrounds and gives them opportunities they may not otherwise have known. One more reason TEN CHARITIES is a GREAT non-profit in my eyes is that they are very diligent about fully respecting the privacy of each girl, each young woman they work with. Each story is personal, unique, and often devastating... Rather, TEN Charities encourages each person to look forward and move forward, and must say I can support that wholeheartedly. Thank you for your commitment to these young people.

I love this organization. They are lean and serious, and you can see the effects of their work everywhere. I have sponsored a child for the past 9 years, and I have come to know her through the consistent letters and reports I receive. I donated to the "Raise the Roof" campaign and got to witness a new shelter home built in a very vulnerable border area in India. In short, what I find is that when I give, I see results, and I feel good about where my dollars are going. In addition, all the communications and posts from this organization are uplifting, hopeful, forward-oriented. It is clear that the survivors of trafficking and other violence are at the center of this organization's planning and programming, and they are respected and honored as partners, not objects of "charity." In short, this nonprofit has my highest rating and it is the one I give to over and over again.

My recent service trip to India in support of Animal People Alliance exceeded my expectations in every way. I learned so much about the challenges related to animal welfare as well as the human rights crimes that many young and impoverished people are vulnerable to and actually met some of the survivors that have been helped by APA and the parent organization, Made by Survivors. It was an inspiring and motivating experience to see such great work being done and at the same time learn about the people, language, food and culture of India. The trip was well planned and executed and we really enjoyed the other people on the trip as well as our APA guides and staff - truly made for an even more special and once in a lifetime experience. We hope to continue to support the organization as they grow and expand their scope. My company has a 40 hour volunteer program so I was able to donate some of my work time to the trip and they also made a monetary contribution as well which also made the experience that much more rewarding for me. By empowering survivors as artisans and entrepreneurs, they can rebuild their lives and those of others while making a contribution to society. The approach is designed to create a sustainable solution for one of today’s most challenging global social justice issues, human trafficking. I've been involved with Made by Survivors ever since I heard Sarah speak so eloquently and passionately at a women's retreat here in Colorado over six years ago. During that time I've organized fund raisers, spoken to groups, purchased and sold the jewelry to raise money to build shelters, educate, and give counseling and love to the survivors. Every moment of working with them has left me increasingly impressed with the dedication, high integrity, and compassionate service that Sarah and John and all those involved continue to exhibit. This charity works: It has served thousands of survivors and continues to give 100% of profit from sale of the products to those who need it.

Ten Charities, of Made by Survivors, is for sure the best non profit I've been involved with. The founder, Sarah Symons, has taken on a gargantuan problem (slavery) and worked tirelessly, with strength and compassion for seven years to offer hope for a new life to survivors. I know it hasn't always been easy. There were sacrifices, disappointments, setbacks.
But because of persistence, passion, and an excellent business plan, TEN is now flourishing. Everyone seems to want to help. We partner with dozens of organizations around the world, we've virtually saved the lives of thousands of girls, and we've helped raise awareness of the reality of what traffickng really means.
I'm so proud to be a part of this organization! Sarah's new book, No Ordinary Joy, sums up the essence of TEN: To bring joy where there was despair, to bring a future where there was none, to bring love where there was fear. And this joy belongs to all of us--volunteers, donors, board members, and of course the survivors.
And PS. This is the only non profit I know of where 100$ of the money we make selling their products goes right back to the survivors!

I am so full of gratitude for Sarah and John's having had the selfless idea to begin this charity, and for making it as robust and reliable as they have done. I discovered Made by Survivors a few years ago when I was looking for a small nonprofit that would allow me to get involved in some meaningful way in the life of one specific project. I couldn't have found anyone more receptive than Sarah Symons. She has brought such incredible joy into the lives of my entire family by allowing us to contribute in a way that has enabled us to link directly with the recipients of our donation. To call is a donation feels inappropriate. I feel as though we are receiving back so much more than we give, both in terms of the deep ties we have built to this organization and the personal lives of the family with whom we are so lovingly connected now in Nepal.
I have every faith and confidence in the organization, in the way in which it handles both its administrative and financial affairs, and the outstanding way in which it presents itself within the nonprofit sphere. Heart is at the heart of everything they do and it shows. Couldn't be more devoted to them.

I had the great honor to accompany a small group of volunteers with Made By Survivors to India and witness first hand the powerful difference that Made By Survivors/T.E.N. Charities is making in the lives of women and children - those who have been rescued from trafficking and those at risk of being trafficked. I have visited shelter homes where monies donated by T.E.N. Charities have added entire wings and buildings, I have watched in awe as the young women in their jewelry program have grown into confident artisans and entrepreneurs, and I have experienced the appreciation, joy and the love that not just the girls in the program, but the program directors and other charity partners have shared with the volunteers and with Sarah Symons. Another reason I believe T.E.N. Charities stands out as a great nonprofit is Sarah's due diligence with who T.E.N. Charities partners with and supports. Apple of Gods Eye in Nepal, Women's Interlink Foundation, Rescue Foundation and Destiny House in India are all samples of charity partners that are doing amazing work, changing lives for the better. And finally, I am impressed by the quality of goods that are offered through T.E.N. Charities and love that I can purchase a gift that makes a direct difference in the life another.

I became involved with Made By Survivors as a graduate student worker assisting MBS with a myriad of projects. Having previously worked on human trafficking issues and programs, I was inspired by Sarah's story and the focus on how they wanted the organization to grow and how they wanted the world to see the women MBS works with. Many organizations focus on an emotional connection, ie. showing the suffering and describing the tragic backgrounds of the women, as an attempt to raise funds and support the NGO. However, MBS focuses on the survival aspect of the women. It does not use pity as fundraising mechanism. They focus on helping the women restart their lives through psychosocial attention, training, and job creation. They use private sector approaches, such as selling jewelry, to generate revenue rather than purely asking for donations. I became so motivated and inspired by MBS that I joined MBS as a Board Member in mid-2014. It is an honor to be associated with such a motivated group that doesn't see the beneficiaries as victims, but rather survivors, and looks to support their activities not merely through hand-outs, but through activities that directly benefit the population the serve. Keep up the amazing work!

We are The Apple of God's Eyes in Nepal, we have been working sheltering many Nepalese kids who were trafficked to India. We have 5 shelter homes and one school in Kathmandu, also we have been more than 1.300 scholarships all over Nepal for prevention against human trafficking. Ten Charities has been our partner since long ago. They've been faithful and very participative towards what was proposed. They have been sending financial support and giving sponsorship for many of our kids so we can keep them studying and dreaming about better future.

I have been associated with Made By Survivors for the last 4 years. What pleases me about this organisation is that they have a clear vision and goal and are working to achieve that. The teams both in India and in USA are extremely sorted, hard working and organised. They think BIG and they make sure that they are no less than that. MBS has shown considerable growth in the last four years and I've witnessed an incredible progress in the women working in the jewellery project. Having worked with them, I have been extremely fortunate to meet such genuine people.

Emancipation Network has given me the opportunity to work with the survivors directly which helped me in better understanding of the social issues. Emancipation Network helps in emancipating women from their world of slavery and trauma and empower them to lead a better life. The Jewelry Program in which the girls are trained to become professional trainers, not only teach them the art of metal smithing but also gets the best out of each of them. They are very talented, creative, determined, passionate and each one of them is a leader. This transformation wouldn't have been possible without the intervention of Emancipation Network. They have changed their lives and changed their way of looking at life. Emancipation Network has a high potential in bringing about a change in the way women are looked at in the society. These women have been able to support their family, they are respected and recognized by everyone in their family. Emancipation Network is a tool to reach out to people and to all those victims of sex trafficking who accept their disrespected lives as their 'fate', that there are people who are working to give them back their right and a mean to live a respected life.

My relationship began several years ago with Ten Charities and Made By Survivors when I began purchasing their beautifully handcrafted jewelry for my wellness center. Their product has always been a favorite with my customers. From this professional relationship, I grew in awareness of the epidemic that is human trafficking & how every purchase and person is affected on some level. I have always been impressed by the mission of MBS. They not only shelter these survivors but economically empower them through teaching them a trade.

Last year we were approached to fundraise for Made By Survivors and my husband, myself and my niece Jess Hoertel jumped at the opportunity to financially help such a worthy, reputable charity. We initially thought we would host one fundraiser and that would be that, however, after more education around human slavery we decided to dedicate ourselves to working with organizations such as Ten Charities/MadeBy Survivors to empower them financially so that they can continue doing the wonderful work to help eradicate human slavery.

Since our first meeting with Sarah Symons we have had nothing but a positive experience collaborating with her and the team at Made By Survivors. The organizational skills needed to partner with not only our charity but several in India has been inspiring and a great learning tool for us. Every time we have asked for reports & updates regarding donations made, we have gotten them immediately which only speaks to their transparency and professionalism.

I feel so excited about our partnership with Made By Survivors.

Back in February of last year I was fortunate to visit Kolkata and one of the jewelry centers run by Made by Survivors. It was such a joy and pleasure to see these talented young women at work. They are artist and the expression of their art and the love for what they do shows through in the quality of the products they make. They shared their drawings and concepts as well as walked us through the process of jewelry making. The passion that they have for what they do was so clear in all that they shared. The organization is such an inspiration and is doing such great things for India, Kolkata and giving hope to these young women. My visit was life changing for me and how I approach all aspects of my life. Looking forward to my next visit.

I am the owner of a small Fair Trade Shop in Newport, KY called "It's only Fair!" We have been selling Made by Survivor products for about 3 years. Several years ago, my daughter & I traveled to India to visit some of the projects that we are partnered with there. It was my first visit to India, but hopefully not my last!
We spent 2 days with Made by Survivors' staff in Kolkata, visiting several of their homes & the Jewelry Center. Our time there was amazing, as was the staff we were privileged to spend time with. I was so impressed with the work they are doing, and the difference that they are making in the lives of so many girls & young women! I just received a shipment of their beautiful jewelry & felt bags from Nepal this week, our store will continue to carry their products!

This organization is amazing. I had the pleasure of going to India and meeting with the women and children and the staff. The women are so proud of what they have accomplished and they were a pleasure to work with. They taught us how they make the jewelry and showed us some of their sketches of the their designs that they did themselves. They are so smart and very talented I would not have missed it for the world. The children at the centers are so loving and playful. The centers are well kept and the girls showed us around their rooms. We had lunch with the staff and you could see and feel the pride they have in the women and children. Made by Survivors has made such a difference in the lives of so many just showing love and encouragement to women and children who have been through so much. And the founder Sarah Symons should be commended for her determination and sacrifices she has made to make this dream of hers come true, she is truly an

My girlfriend and I had the extreme pleasure to visit the Jewelry Center and Destiny this year. The women amazed me with there work ethics and there pride. They work so well as a team and support each other. They are so talented with their work and they do it so well. While there the ladies trained us on the some of the work they do and it was amazing to actually see the jewelry in the end. They told us they have their own savings and talked about starting their own businesses some day. The atmosphere at the center was filled with a lot of love and pride. They made us feel so welcome. The day my girlfriend and I left to come back to the states we didn't want to leave, we wanted to spend more time there. I have so many of the products they make and I've shown them to other people and they want the web site and are amazed at what they see these ladies make. The staff of this non profit are very dedicated to helping these women and children make a better life for themselves. I was actually in awe of the work they do.

After hearing Sarah Symons speak at a local event, describing how she gave up her comfortable life to become a modern day abolitionist, I just had to be a part of her wonderful organization. I was fortunate enough to travel to India with T.E.N. Charities, visiting their facilities and partner shelters, and meeting some wonderful people that work for, and are served by T.E.N. Charities. That was almost 4 years ago now, and my family (still) proudly sponsors a child that has survived the horrors of human trafficking so that she can attend school. Though I am not an active member of the organization, I am thrilled to be able to support them by purchasing beautiful handmade items, such as jewelry, and spreading the word of their amazing work any way that I can.

I have also read Sarah's book "this is no ordinary joy" and learned how Sarah became involved in helping people. Sarah is what my vision of a humanitarian is! As a woman with a humanitarian spirit, I have been seeking ways to be useful, using my skills to contribute to a cause for about 6 years. The workmanship and passion that created these pieces is emblematic of a belief in forging a new future for the artisans who make them. Women breaking away from a horrible life and finding empowerment , safety, and a possibility of hope in a new life.I remember a few years ago hearing of one of the shelters or studios being bombed. I only heard about T.E.N. Charities a few months ago, but in that time the people involved and aided by it have earned such a huge place in my heart -- and I've never even met any of them yet! The work T.E.N. does is invaluable, as it is a grassroots effort and recognizes that the best way to help this issue is not to simply throw money at it, but to use the funds to help empower survivors to become self-sufficient. It is one of the only charities that I would (and have) recommended whole-heartedly to family and friends. We are conducting very similar work as we provide training and employment to survivors, empowering them and reducing the risk of their being re-trafficked. MBS has a silver jewelry workshop in Calcutta while we are following in MBS's wake with setting up one in Kathmandu. Sarah and John have been wonderful during this start up phase, readily sharing their experience with us and encouraging the initiative through placing several substantial orders. They have shown excellent due diligence by visiting our workshop personally where they gave their advice and suggestions for improvement to local staff and volunteers. Through MBS our workshop is sells to the U.S. market. Sarah and John are worth their weight in gold (not silver) and MBS so thoroughly deserves this Award.

I checked out this charity, and I know that the founders have dedicated their lives and fortunes to helping survivors of human rights abuses to make new and productive lives for themselves. They have beautiful products too. The cards made of handmade paper are gorgeous. The jewelry glows with personal attention to detail and pride. And giving these items to others is like giving two gifts; the item itself, and the knowledge that someone who really needs a lift is getting one.

I met the founder, Sarah Symmonds, when the organization was in its infancy, over a decade ago. It was lots of fun to have parties and sell the items made by survivors of modern slavery, helping them in their struggle to survive after rescue from brothels or other miserable situations into which they had been forced as children. The items are really great so it's a win, win situation for the women who make the products and the people who buy them. To expedite that is really fun. Now Madebysurvivors sells only over the internet and I have organized students at the school in which I work, to buy a load of stuff (either the parents association or I cover the cost initially) and resell the items to students, teachers and parent before the winter gift giving holidays (xmas, hanukah, etc) We are educating the students about the harsh realities for girls who are the same age as they are, but whose lives are so much more difficult. They are happy to help and spread the word. I feel confident about the organization because I have met the principles in it and have watched it grow, so I know all the efforts go right to real people in need.

Made By Survivors happened to me by sheer luck. And i would like to thank the founders of this organization to have had the belief in me thus having given me an opportunty to be a part of the Made by Survivors (MBS) Kolkata - team. MBS has been a life changing experience for me as it has taught me how with determination and optimisim, one can fight against all odds and stand upright. Catering to hundreds of girls and women who have been subjected to sex-trafficking, ecomnic dispute or abondonment, MBS gives them ample opportunties to re-live a normal independent life, to re-establish their own lost identities, to re-create a sense of self-confidence and self-respect.Life always gives you a second chnace and that's exactly where MBS comes forward lending a helping hand to the women / girls by inviting them to join different income generating projects. The Jewelery Program is one such projects that runs in Kolkata, Jalpaiguri and Boisar (near Mumbai). The women/ girls get proper training in jewelery making from trainers who come from US. They even have different workshops hosted by different volunteers .The program has not only given then financial indepedence but has boosted them with faith and confidence and has helped them to let go their tragic past. They have discovered their hidden talents which not only get noticed but highly acknowledged. There are even women in the program who are now the primary/ only bread earner of their family and they enjoy a sense of satisfaction and victory against the hurdles they had faced so far.MBS is the solution to combat slavery and emancipate women. And most importantly the way MBS functions is unqiue. Each and every member of this organization works with the girls with care, love, affection and sincerity and that's the binding factor between the girls and MBS. I feel proud to be a part of this organization that has been helping and supporting women, girls and children to have a better future, a secured life.

I have peripherally been connected to Made By Survivors since 2009. This amazing organization has been consistent in its support and sponsorship of women and children who are survivors--survivors of greater tragedies than I have ever known yet are pillars of bravery and strength with smiles that still light up rooms. MBS creates economic opportunities for a mother to have a better way of life for herself and her family, thus breaking the cycle of oppression and poverty. I recently visited the jewelry center in Kolkata and was amazed by the quality of the products. Skilled teachers have trained women in the art of jewelry-making, but these women then make it their own by creating new and intricately designed pieces. The staff devoted a considerable amount of time to helping me with translations and transportation, and the founders even paid for one of my flights between centres. The Indian Made by Survivors staff team was phenomenal! They were very welcoming, and always treated my input and contributions as valuable. From my own observations and the in-depth interviews that I completed with all jewelry program participants it was obvious that the girls loved the staff and loved the jewelry program. I first experienced the work Made By Survivors does when I participated in one of their yearly volunteer trips to Kolkata, India. I was impressed to see how well respected they were among the NGO community in Kolkata and how much of an impact their programs had on the lives of the girls they were helping. I saw a lot of love and compassion from the group towards the girls and I saw the girls respond in a way that told me they yearned for this kind of connection and rarely got it from others. it was great to see how the girls trusted the Made By Survivors staff and how they always wanted to be around them. MBS's dedication to helping the girls attain independence (both physically and financially) is something severely lacking with many NGOs that usually just help in one area and not all. MBS's approach is to help the girls during the entire recovery process and beyond. Once they are in the girls' lives they are there until they are no longer needed. I would highly recommend this group to anyone interested in volunteering or wanting to help the cause. They are the real deal.

The Emancipation Network (TEN) is an amazing organization that not only inspires and empowers the women and girls it seeks to support, but the volunteers that take an interest in the cause and the organization. When I first learned about human trafficking, I was in my second year of college and completely overwhelmed by the gravity of the issue. TEN made it possible for me to take concrete steps to educate myself, raise awareness on my college campus, and gave me the opportunity to participate in a volunteer trip that had a deep impact on my life. I am now pursuing a career in international affairs and it all started with the feeling of being able to change the world this small NGO emanates.

I hosted an event early on when this organization was just getting started. My event was a tremendous success, thanks to the support from the folks at Emancipation Network. They went above and beyond making sure that my guests were happy. And the items we sold were just beautiful! Many of my guests continued to purchase through the website long after my event. Since that time, I've watched this organization grow and really expand its influence and its impact. It's just wonderful to see. I wish you all the best going forward!

The Emancipation Network has been a part of my life for several years. Over time, the staff, the volunteers, and the survivors have been weaved into the fabric of my soul. I was fortunate enough to travel last winter with The Emancipation Network to Kolkata, India for two weeks. It was a life changing experience. Being a part of the freedom movement and serving hands on with the team, forever altered my world view and love of humanity. TEN goes beyond professional and passionate, they are heroes. They are changing the lives of girls and women by promoting and implementing job training, education, access to medical care, safe shelter, and making girls in their program "slavery proof". It is with a full heart that I share how much I honor the work of this organization and the beautiful people that work and serve with them in the name of global freedom.

I have had an amazing experience volunteering for this organization! Through the Emancipation Network, I've been working with survivors of trafficking in Harlem, NY for the past year; training them to make jewelry (specifically wire work and beading) and facilitating a production line of their own designs with a percentage of the profits going back to the young women. I also just returned from an incredible month in India volunteering as a jewelry trainer for girls rescued from slavery in brothels.
Both of these experiences have been exceptional thanks to founders Sarah and John and their team. Through my volunteer work here, I believe I have been able to contribute in a meaningful and productive way. I plan on continuing to volunteer indefinitely!

I have been involved with TEN as a volunteer for over a year now. I begain by going on a volunteer trip to India last January/February 2010. There, I worked with adults and children who have been victims of human trafficking. The TEN staff are incredibly warm and welcoming and have incredible passion for the anti-trafficking movement. Further, they empower survivors to take part in their healing process rather than simply giving them direct services.

I have been involved with TEN for over five years. I began by fundraising and coordinating educational events in Arizona, and after I volunteered with the organization in India, I really felt called to take a more direct role. I am currently working to expand TEN's efforts in rural India- more can be found at www.saktiprogram.blogspot.com. TEN has definitely changed my life for the better, and I know countless volunteers, survivors and at risk women feel the same. I have personally met some of the girls TEN has worked with, and it is amazing to see how empowered and self-sufficient they have become.

I recently returned from a trip working with the Emacipation Network in Kolkata, India. I found their work there very focused to provide the most benefit and effective results with the resources at hand. I respect and have more fully and practically adopted their approach that freeing slaves must be primarily concerned with slave-proofing and providing sustainable freedom to those liberated.

I will continue to work with the Emancipation Network and the lessons they've taught me will carry over into my own work.

I love the work that The Emancipation Network is doing in our world! Creating a life for those who've been denied basic rights. Giving these women hope and love. The women then pass-on the hope and love. It is a never ending cycle. Thank you to all the partners of The Emancipation Network, the volunteers, and the people who continue to resuce others from slavery!

This organization helps women and children who have been trafficked for sexual purposes. They also help women and children who are at threat of being trafficked. They are changing lives every single day for thousands and thousands of people. Not only do they help in the rescue of human beings but they also help the same people to create a life that was stolen from them by giving them a place to stay, food, clothes and most importantly a sense of self worth. They also help by giving vocational training in different areas and education to the younger victims. I cannot say enough good things about this organization.

I have been following Emancipation Network/Made By Survivors for years. Their passion and dedication to meeting the needs of human trafficking survivors is remarkable and far reaching. In addition to providing education and employment skills to survivors, they also work to prevent human trafficking by reaching vulnerable people through their programs and partnerships in multiple countries. The Emancipation Network is effective and works hand in hand with many other organizations in the fight to end slavery.

Being a part of the work that The Emancipation Network does has been an absolute gift. I have learned so much, met so many wonderful people, and filled a spiritual void that had been very much needed in my life. I can not express how much I have gained from being a part of this organization.

I am currently sponsoring the school for a 13 year old girl in Kathmandu, India. The staff has been wonderful with answering all my questions, and ensuring that the money and my letters are actually going where they're supposed to be going. The moment I received the pictures, report card, and correspondance of the young lady was a moment I'll never forget. I highly recommend sponsoring all the children you can. The Emancipation Network makes it easy to do, and the cost is very reasonable. The only thing that would make this experience better is to actually meet the sponsored child in person, and hopefully this year I will!

Volunteering for the Emancipation Network is a wonderful experience. You learn much about how to approach women and girls moving away from horrible circumstances. You are reminded these women and girls are survivors. I love telling people about the economical model behind the organization. It's a smart model.

In January of this year (2011), I traveled to Kolkata with a group of volunteers. It was an incredible and life changing experience. I am committed to returning again next year. I met wonderful staff who serve the organization, had my heart sung open by the beautiful smiles and open hearts of the girls in the shelter homes. In spite of what one would think, that visiting survivors of trafficking might be a terrible and heavy task it was SO not that at all. The girls are focused now on their present and their future. Their love and joy was palpable. I want to sponsor a child to go to school, and am committed to rounding up others in my life to do the same. This is a hands- on wonderful organization. I made lifetime friends and cannot wait to go back!

My family recently sponsored a child's education through The Emancipation Network. Today we received a beautiful card made by the child we are sponsoring. My own children beamed as they held this piece of artwork in their hands. Knowing they are helping a young girl go to school makes them so happy and it makes me happy to help such a worthy organization. I've been part of other fundraising and awareness events with TEN, and it's one of the most wonderful organizations. Fighting human trafficking could seem daunting and dark, but TEN brings hope to such an awful reality. Being involved with TEN has lifted me up in so many ways, and I hope to become more involved in the future.

In my experience, The Emancipation Network is an amazing organization comprised of truly giving people. I spent a month in Kolkata, India teaching survivors of human trafficking and slavery metalsmithing skills so they can produce jewelry and become economically independent. An entire metal working studio needed to be set up, not an easy feat, a language barrier needed to be tackled amongst other challenges. We accomplished these goals through the dedication of the Network but so many more survivors could be helped with increased funding.

I love helping The Emancipation Network change lives, plant seeds of awareness and make a difference in the lives of survivors and those at risk. I sponsor a child in school and want to sponsor a thousand more! Awareness events are fun to do and are very rewarding because we can see the difference TEN's programs and partners make! Check it out on the website or first hand and volunteer in India!
