Review for CITY SINGERS YOUTH CHOIRS, Richmond, VA, USA
Ten years ago I had a daughter who wanted to sing. She wanted to sing much more often than the one day each week she got to at our public school. I went looking for a quality program that was inclusive and would take the time to give her a complete, well-grounded choral education. I found those things and more with City Singers. She was with the choir for 9 years before she graduated and went on to accept a music scholarship to college. I doubt that she could have achieved as much as she has without the support, training, education and opportunities she found through City Singers. Three years ago, I agreed to serve on the board of directors. I love it that our directors are always challenging themselves and their students to come up with new ways to expand their creativity and talent.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Expand the board and the budget so that we could continue to increase the number of children served. So far we have never had to turn away a student for financial reasons. We need to keep it that way!

Review for MOBIKES MOBOOKS MOBILE, Richmond, VA, USA
Books on Wheels has been a tremendous resource for The Messages Project. We record and send messages from inmates to their children. When we are able, we like to make books available for the inmates to read on camera and then send as a gift to their children with the DVD they have made. We feel strongly that the tangible gift of a book in this situation conveys very forcefully that literacy is important. Since literacy and educational attainment are correlated with keeping kids out of prison when they become adults, we are really excited to have a partner like Books on Wheels which helps us keep supplied with paperbacks we can offer as part of our programming.
