Review for Holocaust Center Of Northern California, San Francisco, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

The Holocaust Center of Northern California (HCNC) has added an intensely meaningful dimension to my life as an American Jew. HCNC works tirelessly to increase awareness about the causes and consequences of racism, anti-Semitism, intolerance and indifference today through the lessons of the Holocaust. With a tiny staff of four, it administers a Survivors Speakers Bureau for schools and community groups, reaching 15,000 people annually. It archives survivors' oral histories and houses the largest collection of materials about the Holocaust in the west. It runs free workshops for Bay Area teachers and hosts and I have enjoyed cultural and artistic programs for the general public. Special programs for teens, such as the annual Day of Learning and the trip to Poland and Israel("Shalhevet")are superb learning experiences.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

in attending educator training that teach the Holocaust to Bay Area teachers and provide them with curricula and materials. I have learned a great deal about the Holocaust by browsing in HCNC's incredible library and attending films and special programs.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

improve its fundraising by hiring a development director. It's a vicious circle - not enough money to hire someone to work exclusively on fundraising.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

learning from the staff and knowing that HCNC's programs reach more than 15,000 persons annually. The educational programs for the public have been excellent, such as the recent one on the Holocaust in Italy.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

superb! the staff are first-rate - two young women who can inspire the young with their curricula, a devoted and super-compentent Executive director, a skilled archivist, and many survivors with fascinating stories who volunteer.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

expand its teaching reach to the whole West Coast. There's no other organization in the West with its resources and staff with its skills. As it is, people come continually from out-of-st

Ways to make it better...

HCNC had the funds to expand their reach and increase their teaching staff.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

inadequate funding. The budget is very slender and staff salaries are well below the nonprofit market. HCNC needs to increase its fundraising!

One thing I'd also say is that...

this is the most satisfying Board on which I have ever served. I know concretely the difference HCNC makes in people's lives with the lessons of tolerance it teaches and its message of the value of diversity.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every month
