The Holocaust Center of Northern California (HCNC) has added an intensely meaningful dimension to my life as an American Jew. HCNC works tirelessly to increase awareness about the causes and consequences of racism, anti-Semitism, intolerance and indifference today through the lessons of the Holocaust. With a tiny staff of four, it administers a Survivors Speakers Bureau for schools and community groups, reaching 15,000 people annually. It archives survivors' oral histories and houses the largest collection of materials about the Holocaust in the west. It runs free workshops for Bay Area teachers and hosts and I have enjoyed cultural and artistic programs for the general public. Special programs for teens, such as the annual Day of Learning and the trip to Poland and Israel("Shalhevet")are superb learning experiences.
