Review for Make A Difference, Goa, , India
I was in the 11th grade when I met a boy who is a son of a servant who worked at our home, who hails from Tamil Nadu. The boy is in the kindergarten and because of their poor financial background they decided to cancel his schooling including his elder brother's. Understanding the nature of the boy, who was so curious to know about lots of things, I decided and told his mother that I would teach him whatever I have learnt in my years of schooling. Though language was a barrier between two of us, I tried to get over with it somehow and I successfully taught numbers and a few alphabets and words. But before I could teach him any further his family decided to shift back to their hometown as they could not afford the rent they were paying for the house they were living in and his mother's income which she received from my mother was not helping much. I recollect a time when I was teaching this boy he accidently saw my wallet and he was demanding the money in it. He could have stolen the money, but he did not. Seeing this innocent act, I was able to see how much his family was suffering and how much that suffering has influenced his attitude towards money. He didn't know why he did it but he knew his family badly wanted it. When he and his family left, from that moment onwards I started fantasizing about a community that provides me a platform to educate such (I prefer not to use the term 'underprivileged') children. After about four years, I met this girl with whom I became an instant friend at a competition in which we both were participating. After a month or two, she called me to let me know about a community called Make A Difference, lovingly called MAD in which she was a volunteer. She insisted that I should join and promised me that it would be a wonderful experience. Without any second thoughts I attended the recruitment session and they interviewed me and later called me that I was selected and that I am a Maddy. I didn't know then that my friend was actually fulfilling my wish to become a teacher. Its been almost six months now and I am teaching English to eight sweet and smart girls who aspire to do great things and become great human beings. With effective training session conducted every once or twice a month it helps me to explore better ways of teaching. And for all this I have to thank that girl whom I met in the competition and last but never the least, MAD. MAD is not only a platform for us to educate such children, but it also provides a platform for those children who wants to be other than doctors and engineers; about the endless options and opportunities that are available once you have finished schooling. And more than that it gives an answer to the problem of the vicious cycle our country is suffering from for years: illiteracy, poverty and unemployment. MAD is a place where no one complains but everybody in it, acts responsibly and dutifully. With a syllabus that is easy to follow provided by EZ Vidya, I am now spending two happy hours with my children every week teaching them communicative English through lots of games and activities suitable for all age groups. I feel immensely fortunate to have been a part of this venture. It not only provided an opportunity to make a difference in such children's lives but it also made a difference in my life as well. Join MAD, and I promise you, that it will be one of the most wonderful experiences in your life.
