Review for Make A Difference, Goa, , India

Rating: 5 stars

Make a difference. I first heard about it from a friend at a dance class I used to go to. Me being the useless kid I am thought of giving it a shot, a short in the dark. Got all psyched up got prepared to go for the training and the interview! When I got there, I couldn’t judge if this was something far beyond me or if I was just wasting my time. An amazing presentation and introduction by the president of my city! Towards the interview, which was one-on-one and intimidating my nerves caught up to me and watching the others do crazy things like screaming that they’r gay and singing, I was wondering what I would be made to do! The interview went pretty good, exactly the opposite of what I expected it to be like, and the interview was’t the only thing that went that way. Got a call back and I was a MAD volunteer! The people I was with were all to-be lawyers, big surprise! Funny, enthusiastic, focused and energetic! I was a kid to them, I am, but they never made me feel that way! They all treated me with respect and gave me responsibility which I loved and depended on me, which being the unproductive girl I am, I was’t used to! Felt great, and I was determined to deliver! MAD, MAD, MAD! :D The first class that I took was so scary! All these new faces with a shine in their eyes, all pointed towards me, waiting to know how I sounded like. Screaming and clapping, gathering around me like I was a celebrity, wanting to know my name and everything possible! After I got to know a little about them as well, on a fresh day I took my first attempt to teach them English. The class was chaotic, I did’t know what the hell I was doing and, yes , it was a total mess. Later on as I got a hang of it and myself, I was able to get through to them, even if it was for that day, what I was told to teach them. Simple things like having a conversation with someone, which came naturally to people like me. It was tricky to teach them but I had co-volunteers which were wonderful and wonderful. I felt like I made a difference that one day, that one hour! It was the best feeling ever, to know that you are helping kids get to their dreams and stand up on their feet and make their parents proud. I had good classes, worst classes and overly amazing classes as well. By now, I knew each and every one of my girls by name and how they are! I loved substituting for anyone, anytime! What I want to say is, I started loving them! Their character, their desire to learn! MAD made me mad! The last class I took was the one before their diwali holidays, where we just had a heart to heart session with them, told them inspirational stories, stories about people we knew and ourselves! There was crying and hugging and everything mushy! They were MY girls. Strong, happy and roaring to be someone and prove themselves. Ashwini, a 5th grader came up to me and asked me if I would come back after the holidays were over? I assured her that I’m not going anywhere anytime soon! I came back home and cried like a baby for the fate they were given and how they without knowing rise up and fight. MAD not only thought me values, I could learn from 5th and 6th graders but also made me stronger and focused, for I was the partial role model for 30 girls after Kareena Kapoor and 20 other names! I was Making a Difference, and so were they. Mad is the best thing that happened to me, and I’m glad I have 30 amazing faces to know and love.
