Review for Valley River Humane Society Inc, Murphy, NC, USA
Valley River Humane Society (VRHS) in 2012 was a high-kill Shelter, taking in about 2000 cats and dogs, euthanizing 60% of the cats and 40% of the dogs. VRHS sends dogs monthly to the Connecticut Humane Society and adopts dogs and cats locally. It is supported by volunteers at its Thrift Store and has county contracts, covering about 25% of its costs with Cherokee and Clay Counties. The new Board of Directors in 2013 is working to reverse the euthanisia rates. Unfortunately, the Shelter Director, Karen Tankersley, and her staff discourage communication with the public and lack computer skills to maintain the records. They have discouraged volunteers and generally cannot even enter pictures of their animals properly along with descriptions (they only give the color of the animal -nothing about its personality, age, sex, medical history, etc into Pef Finder, so that the public knows what animals are there. 2013 can be a good year for VRHS if they can change Shelter Director and the receptionist (known for her rudness and incompetence) and hire staff with empathy for animals who will keep the kennels clean, exercise the animals, and interact with the public in a positive way.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Replace the shelter director and receptionist and have the Director oversee the kennel staff.

Review for Logan's Run Rescue, Murphy, NC, USA
In 2011, the Logan's Run Rescue (LRR) Board decided to concentrate on Spay and Neuter and began to discourage and eventually forbid Members from rescuing stray animals, breaking the By Laws and Mission Statement. In 2012, under the leadership of President Mark Lyden, they began harassing members by making false accusations and filing criminal complaints, all of which were thrown out. In August of 2012, 17 members resigned in a letter to the Cherokee Scout outlining the abuses .
For a summary of the malicious acts by the LRR Board, please go to www.logansrunrescue.co. The acts continue into 2013 as Mark Lyden refuses to use public-allocated funds for spay and neuter animals belonging to the public because of his personality differences with them. The LRR Board is a mean-spirited group of individuals.
