Review for Fedwell Farm Rescue Inc, Scottsdale, AZ, USA
I saw a dog from Fedwell Farm rescue on petfinder.com and went to the location to meet said dog. I met the owner and main overseer of the all the dogs at the very farm-like rescue out in Rio Verde. I inquired about the dog and asked about social skills and potty training. She insisted the dog was potty trained as she "lets her out in the morning and she goes potty" and that she was social with everyone at the shelter. I thought it over for a few days and decided to adopt this dog. The first thing I learned is that she was not house trained at all, she would not go potty on the leash and peed several times on my apartment carpet. It took her almost three days to go potty on the leash. Then when I wanted to introduce her to my family she growled at every dark haired man-which is all the men in my family! She also ended up biting my aunt in the face and did draw blood. In the dog's defense we may have proceeded too fast for her. But the rescue owner did not mention any of the above mentioned issues with this dog. I don't know how she would know because I imagine none of the dogs interact with other people that workers and maybe at events. She didn't have any testing done for the dogs to see their behavior. The owner did reimburse my money and I returned the poor dog back.

Review for Animals Benefit Club Of Arizona Inc, Phoenix, AZ, USA
I went to see a couple dogs at this local shelter about a year ago and was very offput by my experience. To start with it was very hard to find the right office to go to for dog adoptions questions. When I got there I was rudely welcomed by who I assumed was the adopting manager. I understand some dogs bark alot, but they also has a very hyper active and loud dog right by the front desk, and she could not do anything to settle him down. So we were forced to shout over this dog. As she showed me around to the dogs I was interested in she kept asking me if I knew how much work it was having a dog and was almost trying to talk me out of adopting. She was also very rude to my brother when he asked some innocent specific questions regarding dog breed. When I told this to someone at the shelter I now volunteer at, they said that the lady might have had animal hoarding instincts....

Review for Arizona Animal Welfare League, Phoenix, AZ, USA
I went to several animal shelters and visited before I arrived at AAWL. At the time I was looking to adopt maybe. In the end I decided it would be best to volunteer to get my "puppy fix" and I couldn't have picked a better place! Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. All the animals are so well taken care of and they do everything in their power to adopt the cats and dogs out to the right families. As a volunteer I am able to play with dogs and cats whenever I want. I can also take dogs home on a "Gimme A Break" weekend program so that they can enjoy some peace and quite for a few days. There are all kinds of jobs you can do as a volunteer, from laundry to walking to fostering animals. All activities are carefully watched over, with information relayed back to the adoptions counselors for better matchmaking during adoptions. The best ever!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
All aspects. From working at events and seeing dogs get adopted everyday. Everyone at the shelter is genuinely devoted to finding all these animals homes. Every time an animal gets adopted they announce it over the speaker and every cheers for them in the shelter.

What one change could this group make that would improve your volunteer experience?
I would love to see them re-activate the K-9 head start program, which is a behavior training program for certain dogs that have bad habits. I would love to learn dog training!
Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)
It taught me as an individual patience and understanding with animals. I have always loved animals, but never lived with any dogs. Bringing them home for the weekend was a great way for me to see what its like to own an animal.
How did this volunteer experience make you feel?
Fulfilled. Knowing that all those animals have been given a second chance and are surrounded by caring, devoted people is really uplifting.
