18 years ago, I went into the hospital to get a "so called" large ovarian cyst removed. After waking up from surgery, my doctor said they took out a rare form of ovarian cancer. Cancer?? What?? No one in my family had ever had cancer - they had everything else under the sun. I was in total shock and quickly called Support Connection from my hospital bed. Maria spent so much time on the phone with me, answering all of my questions, helping me to take a deep breath and gave me tips on how to move forward. She was experienced, so kind and compassionate and saw me through one of the scariest times of my life. I'll never forget how she also helped me prepare questions for the gynecological oncologist and followed up with me many times to see how I was doing. I couldn't turn to anyone in else in my family or circle of friends for advice because they knew nothing about ovarian cancer. The only ones to call were the staff at Support Connection. They were there for me and I always feel very lucky to have them by my side.
I’ve been a volunteer for Support Connection for more than 10 years now and joined their board of directors two years ago. We lost my sister Mary to breast cancer 20 years ago and my sister Maureen is undergoing breast cancer treatment for the second time in 10 years. Because of my family history, I’m well aware of how devastating a cancer diagnosis is for the person diagnosed and also the toll it takes on their loved ones. So it’s comforting to know that there are other people out there who are going through or have gone through the same frightening time. All of Support Connection's counselors are cancer survivors themselves which puts them in the best position to guide women through a very difficult time.
Once I met the caring counselors, staff, and other volunteers, I knew this was the right organization for me to give my time to. I see how they make such a positive impact on the many people who turn to them for support. Anyone affected by breast, ovarian or any other gynecological cancer, be it a patient, a spouse, a child or a friend, can reachout to Support Connection for help. This organization is very worthy of receiving the Great NonProfit Award.

Knowing we have an organization and counselors and a staff of caring individuals dedicated to answering questions, hand holding, and providing support and services for those diagnosed with Breast and Ovarian cancer is just amazing. I recognize a cure for cancer would be incredible, but having resources and a kind voice to speak to when direction is needed is not only recommended, it makes the processing of the future planning much more positive.
As a long time supporter, it amazes me that Support Connection does not receive recognition across the country for the amazing work they do, and as a dedicated Board President, I am so proud of everything the counselors and staff do daily to ensure everyone who seeks guidance and support gets it. This is the most amazing group of people ever.
I have been a big supporter of Support Connection for over 20 years and always wanted to do more. I have recently be selected to be one of the newest board members and could not be more thrilled on what is to come.
Support Connection is an organization truly like no other. They provide support services to women coping with breast, ovarian and other gynecological cancers and their families. The services are free of charge and provided by women who are, mostly, survivors themselves. So they are uniquely qualified to understand all that these women are experiencing. I have been involved in many not-for-profits and never have I seen the level of passion and compassion embodied by the staff and volunteers of Support Connection. With the exception of some administrative costs, the majority of the monies raised here go directly to supporting those in need. I truly am in awe of this organization and all those who work tirelessly and selflessly, day after day, to ensure that this organization is able to to provide these services today and for many years to come!!

I became involved with Support Connection over 10 years ago at the behest of a friend who was serving on its Board of Directors. Support Connection provides Support Services, free of charge, to women with Breast, Ovarian and other Gynelogical Cancers and their families. It survives solely on money raised through fundraising events, grants and private donations, receiving no funding from larger cancer not-for-profit organizations. It has a small staff of incredibly dedicated and hardworking woman whose passion and compassion for the cause far outweigh any compensation they receive and an amazing group of volunteers who help Support Connection, day after day, carry out its mission. Over its 20+ year history it has helped countless women and their families and I hope it will continue for many years to come. Any recognition it might receive would ccertainly help in that regard and would be most deserved!
Amazing organization that offers real life discussion and guidance to men and women who have received a cancer diagnosis and don’t know where to turn. I have had friends and family who have benefited from these services.
I have been a Board Member for a few years now and am so honored to be a part of this great organization. Our community is blessed to have such a compassionate support group for people with breast and ovarian cancer. Support Connection’s professionalism, peer counseling, education and wellness programs and resources are second to none.
I am fairly new to Support Connection. I started Volunteering about 2 years ago and was overwhelmed with the dedication of the staff to their mission. When I read that they were looking for more Board members I jumped at the opportunity to apply. I am very grateful that I was asked to join their Board.
Being a survivor of both Breast and Ovarian cancer, at the time of my diagnosis I was not aware of the services provided by the peer counselors at the Support Connection. I felt both alone and unable to talk about my diagnosis with my peers. I feel I missed a valuable opportunity. The value of the services of the peer counselors is immeasurable.
