Causes: Leadership Development
Mission: To discover, develop and mentor writers of black literature at every level of their development.
Programs: The legacy awards recognize and honor the best in black literature through an annual juried competition. Independent judges vote on submissions in the categories of fiction, nonfiction and poetry published that year. Undergraduate and graduate students submit unpublished work to be judged by award-winning authors. The annual ceremony is held the third friday in october.
the foundation provides multiple workshops to serve emerging and mid-career writers working in the genres of nonfiction, fiction and poetry. Participants receive intensive, professional instruction and feedback from renowned authors, journalists, agents and editors. More than a thousand writers have participated in workshops since the first session in 1996.
public readings and programs are held in local libraries and bookstores and connect readers to a select group of prominent authors.
