The focused mission of this organization to address the issues of aging Black Lesbians achieved a significant milestone at the end of 2024 with the completion of the renovation of Biggers House to provide safe living space for aging Black elders. This project brought together many donors and demonstrates the ability of the organization to manage a significant project that will profoundly and positiviely impact the Atlanta community by creating a focused resource for the members of this community.
This organization has been a God send for me and many other aging Black Lesbians, by providing experiences that connect us so that we are not alone or isolated. Examples of this is monthly Pot Lucks and different members homes. Group road trips, and phone calls to check on our members as much is needed.
My experience with ZAMI NOBLA has been one of the most fulfilling and meaningful of all my life's relationships. ZAMI NOBLA provides a framework that addresses the issues facing older Black lesbians by providing an outlet for social, cultural, and educational experiences. From studies that addressed the health and welfare of Black lesbian elders during COVID-19, to the renovation of a house that will soon be home for a Black lesbian elder, to heading programs of educational and cultural events, ZAMI NOBLA is and has been as important to my life as the years I've spent in formal education and in my career experiences.
I have the honor of being on this Board. It provides programs and research that benefit the mental and physical health of Black Lesbian Elders. There is the Bigger's House, which provides a community meeting place. And will be expanding to offer a low-income option for our Elders. They are making sure that Black Elder Lesbians do not become invisible. And their needs are not forgotten.
When I learned of ZAMI NOBLA, I instantly knew I had to become a part of this organization. One that is dedicated to the well-being of not only black lesbians, but those of us who have more years behind us as opposed to in front of us. When I think of how as we get older, and how our needs are generally over-looked by society, ZAMI NOBLA gives me hope. The support and resources available through this organization are valuable, not only to the black lesbian but, also to anyone who is concerned about her well-being.”
As an older Black lesbian moving to a new town alone, I had no idea how I was going to meet people and make new friends. Then, I discovered that ZAMI NOBLA has a chapter in NC. They have been amazing! In addition to monthly gatherings to meet other older Black lesbians and build community, they also have a private WhatsApp group where we get inspirational messages and can share what's happening in our lives. There's even someone who calls regularly to make sure I am doing okay. I know that loneliness and isolation is a huge threat to the health of older adults, and I am so grateful to ZAMI NOBLA for making sure I have the social connection and community I need as I age.
ZAMI NOBLA is a pioneering nonprofit dedicated to empowering Black lesbians over 40. As the only organization focused exclusively on aging Black lesbians, it excels in service, advocacy, and community action research. Their impactful programs and state chapters in North Carolina and Georgia effectively build power and advance both feminist and LGBTQ rights. Thank you, ZAMI NOBLA, for your unwavering commitment—you are making a profound difference in the lives of Black lesbian elders!
Salute to ZAMI NOBLA for their outstanding work with Elderly Black Lesbians. Life for aging Black lesbians is enriched by their dedication to providing programs and services that foster a supportive community.
This organization has numerous programs and services that strives to better the lives of black elder lesbians. It’s an honor to be a part of this important work. It has provided me with new connections, new resources and opportunities to learn.
The programs and community provided are a great way to stay connected to my community. Everyone is welcoming and engaging. I learn, I share, I've grown, and I also feel at home. I am thrilled this organization exists.
Thank you ZAMI NOBLA for the work you do to support and empower black lesbians over 40. Through this organization, I have made some valuable connections, found support from other black lesbians, and I am always learning something new through the educational programs. I also get to volunteer and pass on what I have learned to other black lesbians.
