Mission: Provide services and programs for women, teens, children, and families of miami-dade county in focusing our mission of eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.
Programs: Early childhood program - the ywca operates and manages five early learning centers, implementing a well structured, anti-biased developmentally appropriate curriculum. Each of these centers meet strict nationally established accreditation standards, serving approximately 634 children from six weeks to five years of age. In addition, the ywca operates four specialized drop off centers that provide intervention and prevention activities for approximately 2,651 children, from infants to age 12, whose families are attending judicial hearings.
youth programs - the elementary after school division supervises the ywca local elementary after school programs, operated on-site at local public schools. Started in 1976, this program meets the needs of working families by providing elementary school children with a safe and supervised environment that includes age appropriate academic and enrichment activities during out of school time. Currently operating in ten miami-dade county public schools and centers from south miami to north miami-dade, the ywca serves approximately 765 children daily. In addition, the teen division is committed to providing life enriching experiences for inner- city youth. The ywca provides quality enrichment activities for pre-teens and teens that reside in low income neighborhoods with the goal of redirecting them towards more positive pursuits, including technology, peer counseling, tutoring, athletics, cultural and recreational field trips. These programs serve approximately 196 youths and include the computer clubhouse, teen pregnancy prevention, mentoring, drop-out prevention and other enhancements and services specifically designed to help youth make positive contributions to their communities.
family services - this program offers services to families that assist them in improving their quality of life. Services include the economic empowerment program, designed to educate low and middle income women and families in all aspects of financial matters and assist them to develop solid savings practices. The economic empowerment program continues the financial educational component, case management, and financial planning coupled with client incentive. Under this program, approximately 151 women and families were served. In addition, family services provides holiday activities that include meals and gifts to families in need, and special neighborhood events that provide activities for the whole family.
family wellness services - having actively joined in the fight against breast and cervical cancer since 1994, the family wellness program provides much needed health services for free or at minimum charge to uninsured minority individuals living in miami-dade, broward, and monroe counties. The program provides clinical breast exams, screening mammograms, cervical screening, re-screenings, education, case management, and follow-up services serving over 1,544 individuals. In partnership with see foundation, inc. And community partners, the walking to wellness initiative began in january 2016, as a pilot phase to develop social supportive, self-sustainable walking groups in the miami gardens community. This pilot concluded in june 2017. The living healthy miami gardens collaborative gleaned many new lessons-learned recommendations for successful future implementation of sutainable community wellness strategies. Miami gardens development project - in 2001, the ywca acquired property located in miami gardens. The property is approximately 9. 75 acres in size and can accommodate up to 117,000 gross square feet of building space. The ywca completed the intergenerational center during the year ended june 30, 2017 and the related expenses are reflected in this fund.
