Mission: Youth radio's mission is to develop underserved youth,ages 14-24 years old, to become leaders in the multi-media industry and the community and to serve as mentors to other youth. Youth radio was founded on the deeply held belief that these youth have the creativity, technical skills and entrepreneurial spirit to become leaders.
Programs: Media production company youth radio partners professional journalists with low-income youth to produce peabody award-winning journalism that reaches audiences in the tens of millions each year. Youth radio distributes digital and broadcast content through outlets like the huffington post, national geographic, new york times, teen vogue, pbs, a range of local public radio stations, and npr (yr is their official youth desk). Youth radio runs several news desks to produce high-impact content on a range of issues including youth employment, juvenile justice, health, education, and science. Youth radio's media assets have won more than 60 of journalism's most prestigious awards, including two george foster peabody awards, four edward r. Murrow awards, alfred i. Dupont-columbia award and recognition from the white house in 2012.
digital media and technology educationyouth radio educates low-income 14-24 year olds in media, arts, and technology. Youth radio students engage in six months of intensive media and technical education and on-the-job training. In the first three months of training, students survey journalism, audio/music production and, and multimedia skills. Students who advance to the second three months of training focus on a single track for the session, and graduate with a final project and a polished resume. Upon completion of six months of training, students are eligible for paid internships within one of youth radio's programs/departments. Interns work alongside industry professionals to polish their skill sets in production, tech and engineering, media education, or administration. Working together, they hone their professional skills. Interns are hired through a competitive application process and complete either a three - or six-month employment opportunity. Currently, youth radio provides media education and employment opportunities to more than 250 young people annually.
arts pathwayyouth radio's arts pathway provides participants with dynamic opportunities to work alongside professional artists to learn and create art. Youth radio uses the arts to expand the experience of participants, engage the community, and provide a bridge to sustainable employment. The work is showcased through digital, social and broadcast media, performance venues, gallery spaces, museums, and non-traditional art spaces.
wraparound support services (academic and career advising, case management and mental health, nutrition)academic and career advising: youth radio helps every student reach their academic and career goals by assigning an advisor that provides individualized guidance on a range of higher education and professional opportunities, in addition to workshops, field trips, guest speakers. Services include, but are not limited to, homework assistance, standardized test preparation, college application support, financial aid guidance, resume and cover letter writing, and interview preparation. Case management and mental health services: every youth radio participant has access to mental and physical wellness support designed to help them manage challenges in all areas of their lives through case management. By providing wraparound support services to our young people and supporting them in examining their own experiences, our process promotes resiliency and self-sufficiency. Case managers connect young people to external resources and supports as needed, including housing, healthcare, legal support and more. Additionally, case managers refer participants to free, on-site, therapy provided for up to one year through a partnership with a clinical psychology graduate school in berkeley. Nutrition: youth radio provides students with basic nutrition, culinary skills, andknowledge of how to prepare accessible and healthy food options. Daily snacks and weekly meals are prepared by a team of youth interns working alongside a professional chef.
