the teen volunteer program (tvp), started in 1992, aligns with youth success by improving youth workplace skills and education success and reducing risky behavior. Tvp focuses on serving 280 youth ages 13 to 19 years with year-round activities. Tvp partners with schools to provide youth with positive volunteer work experiences. These experiences teach appropriate workplace habits and enhance a program participant's ability to obtain future employment. Youth learn goal setting, communication, problem-solving and character building traits. Tvp provides a safe and healthy learning environment in which to teach academic and career-based skills. Participants visit college campuses and volunteer at community events. Outcomes last year showed teens contributed over 10,000 hours of volunteer time to the san antonio community. The volunteer activities improved the teen's job skills and assisted in the development of positive character traits. They also demonstrated achievement in setting goals, problem solving and communication. Mi carrera aligns with youth success by focusing on at-risk girls attending public middle and high schools in san antonio. The program was initiated in 1996 and strives to serve 127 girls each year. Mi carrera partners with schools to offer weekly 45-minute educational sessions within the classrooms throughout the school year. In a safe and healthy environment, mi carrera uses evidence-based strategies to increase the students' self-confidence; improve their communication and anger management skills; and motivate them to complete their education and pursue a career. Out of school time activities offered to participants include college campus field trips and youth leadership opportunities.
