Mission: The ymca is so much more. What once was considered just a gym and swim has been so much more than that for many years. In new britain and berlin, we have been building better and stronger communities for over 130 years. Our work can be categorized into three primary service areas: youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. While our diverse community may only use one of those distinct services, our volunteers and staff work to incorporate all into the tapestry of our ymca family.
Programs: Healthy living: more than a fitness center, the y looks to build the whole person through programs which stretch and challenge each person regardless of their ability. We have programs designed for our toddlers and pre-schoolers, students, adults and seniors. Special needs programs are also available. A full size gym, 5 handball/racquetball courts, a climbing wall, spinning room, squash court, free weights, fitness studio, pool, hot tub, nautilus circuit and cardio equipment are all part of our y in new britain: the home of the first game of racquetball and the invention of the basketball dribble. In 2014, we served over 5,500 people in our community and provided financial assistance in the amount of approximately $200,000.
youth development: the new britain-berlin ymca offers childcare programming for our infants & toddlers as well as pre-schoolers. Our ct licensed program is curriculum based and run in two locations: one each in new britain and in berlin. Our youth and family team offers school age services for before and after school care for k-5 in both communities. In 2014, we served 500 youth and provided approximately $60,000 in financial assistance. In addition to outreach programs for middle school and high school students who are at risk, we also offer summer camp offerings, a youth basketball league, climbing wall and educational mentoring. In 2014, we served 275 participants and provided financial assistance in the amount of approximately $10,000.
social responsibility: grounded in social responsibility, the ymca movement seeks to build strong communities through volunteerism, financial aid, and subsidized programming. Each year, 6% of our annual budget is raised and then distributed to families in need. Additionally, we are continuing the 162 year history of the y movement by providing for our members in residence. Our 88 room residence is designed to be transitional housing for men and is eligible for participation by ct basic needs program. In 2014, we touched over 125 members of our community and provided approximately $75,000 financial assistance.
