Ten years ago my then 15 year old daughter was depressed, refusing to work with therapists and had quit attending school. I enrolled her in a wilderness program and then a therapeutic boarding school, hoping others could help her find the self-worth and life skills she needed to navigate life. It was the hardest thing I have ever done, and also terribly isolating for me. Willows was formed as a support group for parents whose children are in residential treatment settings. Jan Rao, the founder, and I didn't want others to face the placement of their children, then their absence and finally their transition back home the same way we had. We had no guidance, and no idea what to expect either during the school process or when our teens came home. We learned by the seat of our pants. Willows exists now to share what we have learned in the last ten years, both personally and from the other parents who have come to Willows meetings. Meetings are s safe, confidential place, where parents can learn from each other.
