Causes: Art Museums, Arts & Culture
Mission: The mission of the Westmoreland Museum of American Art is to enrich a growing public through innovative and collaborative approaches to collection, preservation and presentation of American art.
Results: In October 2006, an article in the Philadelphia paper, Art Matters, began: “The Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg, PA, may have helped define the future of art museum exhibitions with its Born of Fire: The Valley of Work. Under any circumstance, it would have been an excellent show and a fine educational opportunity, but what the museum has done goes far beyond the normal ‘pictures on a wall. . . The effort may indeed be a prototype for future art exhibits.â€

Geographic areas served: Southwestern Pennsylvania
Programs: The Westmoreland has three curriculum-based education programs that are included on the Department of Community and Economic Development's Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program list of "innovative education programs." The programs include: Every Picture Tells A Story: Exploring Pennsylvania History Through Art, which uses the state-mandated Pennsylvania history curriculum for 4th grade students. This award-winning program uses the Museum's collection to teach the students about PA's transition from agricultural to industrial. In addition, we also have Stories in Art (for Kindergarten students) and a Middle School Program. All three programs feature classroom visits by the Museum's docents, in addition to Museum tours and a studio art project.
