Mission: The Western States Center is dedicated to the broad goal of increasing the participation of an educated public in the democratic process. Specific purposes served by the Western States Center include these:
We build the capacity of non-profit public interest organizations to educate their constituencies, train leaders in citizenship skills, and participate in the democratic process.
We promote collaboration among constituencies divided over social, economic and environmental issues, creating new alliances and partnerships better able to address complex public policy problems.
We analyze the flow of private campaign contributions, exposing hidden and unfair influences on the public policy process, stimulating participation in public affairs, and encouraging government accountability and campaign finance reform.
We educate the public, the media, and decision-makers on key public policy issues facing the West today.
