Nonprofit Overview

Causes: AIDS, Health, Health Support, Public Health

Mission: WECAHN (Wellness and Education Community Action Health Network) formerly Chatham Social Health Council was formed in 1991 as a volunteer task force. In the 24 years that WECAHN has been in existence, a group of dedicated community members have volunteered their time in an effort to stop the spread of HIV through prevention education in schools, churches, and other community groups, and to provide support and advocacy to people affected by HIV/AIDS. One example of the Council's innovative approach to educate the community on HIV/AIDS issues is the Barbers and Beauticians United in Prevention project that involves training barbers and beauticians to serve as community educators by providing HIV/STD information to their customers in their shops and salons. WECAHN now has a mobile testing van called the Condom-mobile that reaches several counties and provides HIV/STD testing where people live. WECAHN also offers Bi-Lingual Medical Case Management for people living with HIV/AIDS. We recently expanded our mission to include other health disparities. In November, we will start our new LGBTQ Youth Safe Spaces initiative in 3 area counties.
