Programs: The waitt institute endeavors to ensure ecologically, economically, and culturally sustainable use of ocean resources. During 2014 the institute's efforts were focused primarily on the blue halo initiative in barbuda. This initiative is a partnership between the barbuda council, the local government of barbuda, and the waitt institute to find ways to design and implement sustainable ocean policy within the local jurisdiction of barbuda's waters. The institute was directly involved in working with the community to engage stakeholders through consultations, surveys and interviews, trainings, and others local events and activities. The waitt institute also facilitated scientific underwater survey and outreach operations in support of marine biological research and habitat mapping in the following regions: the island of vava'u in the kingdom of tonga, fiji, the solomon islands and the great barrier reef of australia.
