Mission: Our mission is to grow the awareness of and participation in the dance arts by students, audiences and dance companies in fairfax county virginia. Our goals are to: build the local dance network for students and organizations; increase performance venues and audiences for dance; grow advanced learning opportunities with master classes and choreographers; bring dance experiences to underserved audiences; increase the visibility, understanding and access to dance programs; and address issues facing the dance arts across fairfax county. As a community voice for dance, we focus on bringing dance arts education and experiences to children and adults, and enriching the cultural fabric of our fairfax county virginia community.
Programs: About the fairfax county dance coalition: the fairfax county dance coalition (fcdc) is a collaboration of dance organizations, dance educators, professional dancers and choreographers. Members work together to grow opportunities for dance and build audience appreciation and enthusiasm for the diversity of dance companies and programs in fairfax county, virginia. The fcdc was formed in 2008 as a nonprofit organization with the encouragement of the arts council of fairfax county. As a community voice for dance, the fcdc develops the network for and access to dance performances, scholarships, jobs, advanced training and events. The fcdc helps to bring community attention to the economic advantages of developing performance venues appropriate for dance. Annual "a celebration of dance" gala showcase: "a celebration of dance" is an annual dance gala and also a dance showcase! It's a fun, spectacular performing arts gala-event and it's a showcase of dance styles - ballet, tap, jazz, modern, and international dances. It's a celebration of the high caliber and dynamic dance talent of fairfax county. The fcdc has created this dance production for the entire region. The program inspires dance students and audiences to be a part of making fairfax county a center for dance excellence. The experience draws nationwide attention to the quality of dance evolving in our area. Annual dance scholarship for high school seniors: fcdc presents a $500 scholarship (next year to be $1000) each year to a graduating high school senior in one of the fcdc member organizations who plans to pursue studies in dance. The recipient is announced at the annual gala. Scholarship money must be used for tuition at a college, university, conservatory or summer intensive program for the next performance year. Workshops for dance educators: emerging choreography showcase: fcdc sponsors an opportunity for emerging choreographers to design and present a dance piece in an exciting showcase event. Choreographers must be age 17 and over who have not professionally or publicly presented more than 5 works, and who live, work or attend school in fairfax county virginia. The fcdc awarded $500 to the winner of this year's emerging choreography showcase competition.
