Veterans Transition Home, Inc.

The Southeastern Massachusetts Veterans Housing Program, Inc. is a private, nonprofit 501 © (3) corporation known as the Veterans Transition House (VTH). VTH was founded by a group of local Vietnam-Era Veterans and community leaders. They recognized a need to develop and provide sober, secure, affordable housing to homeless, at risk veterans of the Armed Forces.

VTH opened in September 1990 with an original capacity of ten "single room occupancy" units for homeless veterans. Within one year, the VTH doubled its occupancy, due to great demand. Services were provided to assist residents to work towards satisfying, healthy, and financially independent life styles. The VTH program is located at 20 Willis St., New Bedford, Ma at the former Union Hospital, then Francis P. Memorial Hospital.

Today the male VTH program consists of fifty (50) beds for Veterans. It also includes a non-veteran program, the "Network House". This is a ten (10) bed holding program for non-veterans who need to go to a structured half-way house. The VTH has expanded its services since its inception in 1990. The VTH offers hope and opportunity through individual and group counseling, case management, employment training, job placement, referrals, and transportation.

The VTH Board of Directors oversees the overall function of the organization. The Executive Director monitors daily operational functions that are performed by a Business Manager, Program Coordinators, House Manager, Case Managers, Shift Workers, and VTH Residents and Former Residents. The VTH has provided services to more than 2,000 veterans over its thirteen (13) year period.

All of these achievements have been fostered by the dedication and hard work of our residents, Staff, Board of Directors, Community Leaders, Veterans, and public support.
