Causes: Military & Veterans Organizations, Veterans
Mission: To provide free legal assistance to appellants before the u. S. Court of appeals for veterans' claims and provide training and mentoring on veterans law to volunteer attorneys who provide this representation.
Programs: Case evaluation & placement & administration -- evaluate cases of pro se appellants before the u. S. Court of appeals for veterans claims for merit and place cases with program-trained, volunteer attorneys. During the year, over 2,500 individuals were provided information and assistance related to this component. Program materials such as the "your appeal for veterans benefits" pamphlet, annual reports, and other items were produced and distributed by this component of the program. This component includes several sub-functions (e. G. , case screening, placement, outreach to veterans/dependents/survivors, collaboration with law school clinical programs, additional program services, etc. ).
outreach & education -- recruit, train, and support pro bono volunteers and related personnel regarding the subject matter and practice of veterans law. During the year, this component trained or mentored over 500 pro bono volunteers.
direct representation -- represent appellants before the u. S. Court of appeals for veterans claims when appeals generally present complex legal issues or appear as a substitute counsel when the volunteer lawyer unexpectedly is unable to continue providing representation. During the year approximately 20 clients were provided direct representation services.
